Chasing a daunting target of 373, India B’s batting lineup crumbled under the pressure of Arshdeep’s relentless pace and Aditya Thakare’s accurate swing bowling. The duo shared all ten wickets, with Arshdeep dismissing the dangerous Suryakumar Yadav for a mere 16.

Nitish Kumar Reddy provided some resistance for India B, remaining unbeaten on 40, but his efforts were in vain as Arshdeep fittingly wrapped up the innings with the final wicket before tea on the fourth day.

Ricky Bhui, who was named Player of the Match, played a pivotal role in India D’s victory. His unbeaten 119 in the second innings, coupled with his 56 in the first, helped extend India D’s lead after they had stumbled to 18 for 3.

Delhi speedster Navdeep Saini was the wrecker-in-chief, claiming 5 for 74 in 18.3 overs.

In response, India B began their innings cautiously, with skipper Abhimanyu Easwaran leading the charge. Easwaran, who had scored a century in the previous game, notched up his 25th first-class hundred, a 170-ball knock adorned with 13 fours and a six. However, India B’s progress was halted by Arshdeep Singh, who returned for his second spell with a slightly older SG Test ball.

Arshdeep struck twice in quick succession, dismissing Musheer Khan and Nitish Reddy cheaply. He then accounted for the prized wicket of Suryakumar Yadav, who had been eagerly anticipated by the crowd. With India B reeling at 100 for 5, Easwaran and Washington Sundar (39 batting) steadied the ship, adding 105 runs for the sixth wicket.

However, Easwaran’s dismissal towards the end of the day, caught behind off Aditya Thakare, left India B in a precarious position at 210 for 6. The match remains evenly poised heading into the third day, with India B needing to bat cautiously to avoid a heavy defeat.

Suryakumar Yadav, India’s T20I captain, has been cleared to play in the final round of the 2024-25 Duleep Trophy, beginning on Thursday in Anantapur. He will replace Sarfaraz Khan in the Abhimanyu Easwaran-led India B team, which will face the Shreyas Iyer-led India D.

Yadav had been withdrawn from the squad prior to the first round as a precautionary measure to nurse a thumb injury. He had complained of discomfort while gripping the bat after sustaining a blow on his right thumb while fielding at the pre-season Buchi Babu Invitational in Coimbatore.

Yadav, who hasn’t featured in any form of first-class cricket since last year’s Duleep Trophy, has expressed a desire to compete for a spot in India’s Test team. “There are a lot of people who have worked really hard to earn their place and even I want to earn that spot again,” he said last month.

Going forward, Yadav is likely to be in action next during the home T20Is against Bangladesh in October, which could mean his unavailability for at least the first round of the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy season that’s set to kick off on October 11.

India B, who opened the tournament with a thumping win over India A, are currently second in the four-team table. An outright win in their final game will give them a good chance of clinching the title.

Not only did he pick up four wickets in the game, the 27-year-old was able to inflict a rare type of run out. Yash Dubey, opening the batting for India D, was the victim of a stroke of misfortune and a brilliant piece of game alertness by Mulani.

Striker Ricky Bhui had played a ball bowled by Mulani down the ground, but the ball happened to deflect off non-striker Dubey’s bat. However, Dubey, thinking that the ball had slipped through, attempted to sneak a quick single.

However, an alert Mulani noticed that the ball hadn’t gone too far, and grabbed it and dislodged the stumps at the non-striker’s end. Dubey was late to react, and had to walk back to the pavilion. He was dismissed on a score of 37 off 94 balls.

India A registered a thumping 186-run victory, despite struggling at 94/5 in their first innings. Mulani’s resilient 89 had helped India A to go from there to a total of 290, after which they took a 107-run lead as India D were bowled out for just 183.

Notably, India D captain Shreyas Iyer made a duck, after walking out to bat wearing sunglasses.

In the second innings, centuries by Pratham Singh and Tilak Verma helped India A set a mammoth target of 487. India D were bowled out for 301, with Mulani dismantling the middle order by taking the wickets of Devdutt Padikkal, Shreyas Iyer and Sanju Samson, along with his moment of genius by running out Dubey.

Mulani’s all-round performance has been a key factor in India A’s victory in the Duleep Trophy 2024 second round. His ability to contribute with both bat and ball has made him a valuable asset to the team.
