Indian Railways Triumphs in MCC-Murugappa Gold Cup Hockey Final

The Indian Railways hockey team emerged victorious in the 95th MCC-Murugappa Gold Cup all-India hockey tournament, defeating Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) 5-3 in a thrilling final. The Railways team, the defending champion, displayed dominance throughout the tournament and continued their impressive form in the summit clash.

Despite having a squad featuring several Olympians and internationals, IOC struggled to find their footing against a determined Railways side. The Railways team earned nine penalty corners in the first quarter alone, but managed to convert only one. However, their relentless pressure paid off in the third quarter when they extended their lead to 4-2, leaving IOC with a mountain to climb.

IOC made several attempts to rally back, but their efforts were thwarted by the Railways defense. The former champion also had eight penalty corners, but could only convert one. Railways head coach Sunil Kumar Singh attributed the victory to his team’s superior fitness and the exceptional skills of youngster Simranjot Singh.

“Though IOC had many stars, our players were fitter and better. I would also like to pick youngster Simranjot Singh for not just his ability to score but also his receiving skills. Of course, it has been a 100% team effort,” said Singh.

The match was a testament to the growing strength of Indian hockey, with both teams showcasing their skills and determination. The Railways team’s victory is a testament to their hard work and dedication, and serves as a reminder of the bright future that lies ahead for Indian hockey.

Railways Edge BPCL in Thrilling Hockey Semifinal Qualifier

Defending champions Indian Railways secured a thrilling 5-4 victory over former champions BPCL in the 95th MCC-Murugappa Gold Cup All-India hockey tournament on Wednesday. The hard-fought match was filled with twists and turns, keeping the spectators on the edge of their seats.

Railways dominated the early stages of the game, taking a 4-2 lead going into the fourth quarter. However, BPCL refused to go down without a fight, forcing three consecutive penalty corners at the start of the quarter. Railways’ defense held firm, but BPCL’s relentless attack paid off as former international Devender Walmiki scored a brace within three minutes to equalize.

Just when it seemed like BPCL would snatch a draw, Railways’ Darshan Gawkar delivered the decisive blow in the dying minutes of the match. The goal sent shockwaves through the BPCL camp and secured Railways’ place in the semifinals.

In the other Pool-A match, Indian Army defeated Maharashtra 2-1 to join Railways in the last four. Cyril Lugun and Akshay Dubey scored for Army, while Venkatesh Kenche netted a consolation goal for Maharashtra.

Karnataka Struggles in MCC-Murugappa Gold Cup, Ekes Out Narrow Win

Karnataka Struggles in MCC-Murugappa Gold Cup, Ekes Out Narrow Win

Karnataka’s performance in the ongoing MCC-Murugappa Gold Cup All-India hockey tournament has been a far cry from their impressive run in the previous edition, where they reached the final. In the 95th edition of the tournament, Karnataka has struggled to assert its dominance, failing to replicate the robust display and penalty corner prowess that characterized their previous campaign.

On Monday, Karnataka managed to eke out a hard-fought 4-3 victory over NCOE (Bhopal) in a Pool-B encounter, thanks to a brace each from Abharan Sudev and C. J. Rahul. However, the win came after two disappointing losses, highlighting Karnataka’s current struggles.

NCOE, which entered the tournament with a reputation to defend after winning the Lakshmi Ammal memorial tournament in June, has also failed to live up to expectations. The team has lost two of its three matches so far, including the defeat to Karnataka.

The match between Karnataka and NCOE was a closely contested affair. NCOE opened the scoring early on through their captain Faraz Md., who converted a penalty corner in the seventh minute. Karnataka responded quickly with goals from Abharan Sudev and Rahul, taking a 2-1 lead. Rahul extended Karnataka’s advantage to 3-1 with a back-push from close range.

NCOE came close to equalizing in the closing stages of the third quarter and the start of the fourth quarter through penalty corners. However, Karnataka’s goalkeeper A. C. Subramani came up with some timely saves to preserve his team’s lead.

In another Pool-A contest, defending champion Indian Railways defeated Maharashtra 3-2. Yuvraj Walmiki, Simranjot Singh, and Shivam Anand scored for Indian Railways, while Rohan Patil and Venkatesh Kenche netted for Maharashtra.

Vinesh Phogat Resigns from Indian Railways Amid Congress Speculation

Vinesh Phogat Resigns from Indian Railways Amid Congress Speculation

Former Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat has resigned from her position as an Officer on Special Duty (OSD) with the Indian Railways, citing personal reasons. The resignation comes amid speculation that she may join the Congress party and contest the upcoming Haryana assembly elections.

Phogat, 30, is a renowned wrestler who has won numerous medals at the international level, including a gold medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games and a bronze medal at the 2019 World Championships. She was disqualified from the 50kg gold medal match at the Paris Olympics for being overweight by 100 grams, a decision that she appealed against but was rejected by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

In her resignation letter, Phogat expressed her gratitude to the Indian Railways for the opportunity to serve the nation. She stated that she was unable to perform her duties as OSD due to family circumstances and personal reasons. She requested that her resignation be accepted with immediate effect and that one month’s salary be deposited in lieu of her one month’s notice period.

Phogat’s resignation has sparked speculation that she may join the Congress party and contest the Haryana assembly elections next month. She met with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi earlier this week, leading to widespread rumors of her political ambitions.

If Phogat does join the Congress party, it would be a significant boost for the party’s campaign in Haryana. She is a popular figure in the state and has a strong following among the youth. Her decision to enter politics could also inspire other athletes to consider a career in public service.
