Inter Milan are on the cusp of securing the Serie A title, needing just a victory over Cagliari at the San Siro on Sunday to set up a potential title-clinching derby against AC Milan. Davide Frattesi’s late winner at Udinese on Monday kept Inter 14 points clear of their city rivals, who have won their last five league matches.

Inter’s dominance has been evident since the turn of the year, with only one dropped point and no league defeats since late September. They are also on the verge of breaking several league records, including the all-time points tally, wins, and best defense in a 20-team season.

However, Inter will be without suspended top scorer Lautaro Martinez, while Cagliari have shown resilience in recent weeks, pulling four points clear of the relegation zone after losing just once in their last seven matches. Claudio Ranieri’s team will need to maintain that spirit to avoid the drop, with a challenging run-in that includes matches against Juventus and Milan.

Juventus, currently third in the standings, will aim to strengthen their grip on a top-four finish with a local derby against Torino. Massimiliano Allegri’s side are trying to fend off Bologna and Roma, who are both within striking distance.

Bologna, chasing a Champions League berth for the first time, are four points behind Juve in fourth, while Roma are a further three points back. A top-five finish should be enough for a spot in Europe’s premier club competition, as Serie A is in contention for an extra place in next season’s revamped tournament.

Napoli, despite their disappointing Champions League campaign, remain in the hunt for a top-five finish. Victor Osimhen, who scored a stunning header in their win at Monza last weekend, will be crucial to their chances. Napoli still have to face Roma and Bologna at home, and with Roma’s schedule also including Juve, Bologna, and Atalanta, Osimhen’s form could be decisive in determining Napoli’s fate.

Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid overcame a 1-0 first-leg deficit to defeat Inter Milan 3-2 on penalties and advance to the Champions League quarterfinals. The match at the Metropolitano Stadium was a tense affair, with both teams creating chances throughout.

Inter took the lead in the 33rd minute through Federico Dimarco, but Atletico equalized just two minutes later with Antoine Griezmann’s goal. The match remained level until the 87th minute, when Memphis Depay scored a dramatic winner for Atletico.

In the penalty shootout, Jan Oblak saved two penalties, while Lautaro Martínez missed the final kick for Inter. Memphis Depay, Rodrigo Riquelme, and Ángel Correa converted their penalties for Atletico, while Hakan Calhanoglu and Francesco Acerbi scored for Inter.

Simeone was visibly emotional after the victory, shedding tears as he watched the Atletico fans celebrate. “It was moving,” he said. “I’m happy for the players and for the fans. We are among the best eight teams in Europe again. That tells a lot about this club.”

Oblak was the hero for Atletico, making two crucial saves in the penalty shootout. “In the end it’s a bit about luck in the shootout,” he said. “Because you have to choose the correct side and you have to make the stop. If the player takes the kick perfectly, it’s impossible to stop it. Gladly, I was able to make the saves. What matters is the victory and that we made it to the quarterfinals.”

Inter coach Simone Inzaghi was disappointed with the result but praised his team’s performance. “We must be proud of what we did in this Champions League,” he said. “In the second half we should have done better. In extra time we had more energy but unfortunately we made too many mistakes.”

The eight teams in the draw for the quarterfinals are Atletico, Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid, Manchester City, Arsenal, and Barcelona.

Inter Milan’s relentless march towards the Serie A title continued on Saturday with a hard-fought 1-0 victory at in-form Bologna. The win extended Inter’s massive league lead to 18 points, making the championship a virtual certainty.

Yann Bisseck’s headed goal in the 37th minute proved to be the difference in a tight contest at the Stadio Renato Dall’Ara. The German defender’s second goal of the season extended Inter’s all-competitions winning streak to 13 matches, emphasizing their dominance in the league.

“This is one of the most difficult places to play… beating Bologna is not easy. We gave everything,” said Nicolo Barella to DAZN. “Who knows how soon we can win it (the league), it depends on the other teams. It’s difficult for those chasing us, let’s hope it stays difficult for them.”

Second-placed Juventus have a chance to reduce the gap when they host Atalanta on Sunday. However, with the title race effectively over, Atalanta will have more to play for as they battle Bologna for a spot in next season’s Champions League.

Bologna’s defeat snapped a six-match winning streak and opened the door for other teams aiming for the top four. Atalanta are five points off Bologna in sixth, while Roma can move to within one point with a win at Fiorentina on Sunday.

Despite Bologna’s impressive season, they were unable to find a way past Yann Sommer in goal. “You can’t concede in the way we did because once you’re behind against a team like Inter, they know how to manage the game,” said Bologna coach Thiago Motta.

Inter now turn their attention to the Champions League, where they defend a 1-0 lead against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday. “It will be a great match, the Champions League is possibly the best competition and we need to stay in it as long as we can,” said Barella.

In other Serie A action, Cagliari moved out of the relegation zone with a thrilling 4-2 win over Salernitana, who continued to slide towards the drop. Sassuolo also picked up their first win under new coach Davide Ballardini, defeating Frosinone 1-0.

Serie A leaders Inter Milan extended their commanding lead at the top of the table with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Genoa on Monday. The win moved Inter 15 points clear of second-placed Juventus, who suffered a setback in their title chase with a defeat at Napoli on Sunday.

Inter’s triumph was built on a solid first-half performance, with youngster Kristjan Asllani and veteran Alexis Sanchez finding the net within six minutes of each other. Genoa manager Alberto Gilardino was disappointed with the result but acknowledged Inter’s quality. “We played well in the second half and created some good chances,” he said. “But Inter are a strong team and they deserved to win.”

Inter will now turn their attention to Saturday’s trip to Bologna before hosting Atletico Madrid in the second leg of their Champions League last 16 tie on March 13.
