Mitchell Starc's IPL Struggles Continue, Draws Criticism from Experts

Mitchell Starc’s IPL Struggles Continue, Draws Criticism from Experts

Mitchell Starc, the star pacer of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), has endured a disappointing start to the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season. Despite KKR shelling out a record-breaking Rs 24.75 crore to acquire his services, Starc has failed to justify his hefty price tag.

In the first six matches of IPL 2024, Starc has managed a meager five wickets at an economy rate of 10.54. In four of those games, he has remained wicketless. His performance has drawn criticism from former West Indies fast bowler Ian Bishop, who believes Starc has not lived up to expectations.

“I would assume that Mitchell Starc, especially at that price, hasn’t really hit the nail on its head,” Bishop said on ESPNcricinfo. “He got three wickets last game but tonight (Tuesday) again he would have been hoping to step up.”

Bishop pointed out specific instances where Starc’s bowling lacked precision and strategy. “There was this one over, where he was going wide, wide, wide. When you need sixes, I think it’s a good plan. Then you talk about backing yourself – of course there was that five wides, and the short ball which he got hooked for when there was nobody at square, instead of sticking with the wides and make Buttler hit the ball over that side.”

Former New Zealand star Mitchell McClenaghan, who has played for Mumbai Indians in the IPL, believes Starc is struggling to adapt to the defensive style of bowling required on Indian tracks.

“Two overs in a row, we are talking about the first ball. He has tried to bowl the slower ball, and I think he was trying to bowl a wide slower ball. When you are bowling on these pressure situations, that first ball goes out of the park. And that is a good momentum-starter for the batter,” McClenaghan said.

“He is also learning because the game is changing. IPL is a different beast as compared to international cricket. The grounds are so much smaller. Even mishits go for six. I think he is learning to bowl a lot more defensively on Indian grounds.”

Starc’s poor form has raised concerns for KKR, who are desperate for a turnaround in their fortunes. The team has lost four of their first six matches and is currently languishing near the bottom of the points table.

Mitchell Starc's Costly Outing Raises Concerns for KKR

Irfan Pathan Questions Mitchell Starc’s Performance After Costly Outing Against Rajasthan Royals

Former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan has raised concerns over the performance of Mitchell Starc, the most expensive player in IPL history, following his disappointing outing against the Rajasthan Royals. Starc, who was acquired by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) for a staggering Rs 24.75 crore, conceded 50 runs in his four-over spell during KKR’s narrow loss.

Pathan expressed his apprehension on Twitter, stating, “Most expensive player in your team can’t be your weak link.” Starc’s performance against RR was a stark contrast to his previous match against the Lucknow Super Giants, where he had shown signs of improvement by taking three wickets while giving away only 28 runs in his four overs.

However, against RR, Starc struggled to maintain that form. His opening over went for 11 runs, setting the stage for a high-scoring chase. In the powerplay, he bowled two overs, remained wicketless, and conceded 24 out of the total 76 runs scored. Despite the efforts of Vaibhav Arora and Harshit Rana, who each claimed a wicket, Starc failed to provide the necessary support.

As the chase intensified, Shreyas Iyer’s decision to rely on Starc proved costly. The Australian pacer gave away 18 runs in the 18th over, reducing the equation from 46 runs in 18 balls to a more manageable 28 runs in 12 balls. Harshit Rana and Varun Chakaravarthy were unable to defend the target in the final two overs, as RR secured the victory on the last ball of the match.

Pathan’s criticism highlights the pressure on Starc to justify his hefty price tag. As the most expensive player in the IPL, he is expected to be a key performer for KKR. However, his recent performances have fallen short of expectations, raising questions about his ability to deliver under pressure.

Despite the loss, Khan praised the team’s performance and urged them to maintain their high spirits.

In his address to the KKR dressing room, Khan acknowledged the team’s disappointment but emphasized that there would be days when they would be second best despite playing well. He said, “There are days in our lives, sports especially, when we don’t deserve to lose and it is also when we don’t deserve to win. But days are like that, which turn things around.”

Khan expressed his pride in the team’s performance, saying, “I think today we didn’t deserve to lose, all of us played extremely well. We have to be very very proud of ourselves. Please don’t feel sad or down. Feel as happy as we feel whenever we come to the changing room. We are on a high, maintain the high.”

He also praised the team’s energy and camaraderie, saying, “The main thing is the energy in all of us. We have great energy on the field, we have lovely energy here, personally also everybody is bonding together.”

Khan had special words for team mentor Gautam Gambhir, who was visibly disappointed after the defeat. He said, “GG (Gautam Gambhir) you don’t feel down. We would all be bouncing back. It is God’s plan for today as Rink says. We’ll be back with more & better god’s plans.”

Khan’s speech was met with applause and smiles from the KKR players, who were clearly motivated by his words. The team will look to bounce back in their next match against the Chennai Super Kings on Thursday.

Kolkata Knight Riders Skipper Shreyas Iyer Fined for Slow Over-Rate in IPL Match

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captain Shreyas Iyer has been penalized with a hefty fine of Rs 12 lakh for a slow over-rate offense during their recent Indian Premier League (IPL) match against the Rajasthan Royals. The incident occurred in a thrilling encounter that saw the Royals emerge victorious by a narrow margin of two wickets.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) issued a statement confirming the fine on Iyer. “As it was his team’s first offence of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over rate offences, Iyer was fined Rs 12 lakhs,” the release clarified.

The setback for KKR came amidst their IPL campaign, where they have now recorded their second loss in six games. On the other hand, the win for the Rajasthan Royals marked their sixth triumph in seven matches, placing them in a strong position in the tournament.

The fine imposed on Iyer serves as a reminder for teams to adhere to the IPL’s regulations, including maintaining the required over-rate. The enforcement of such rules is crucial to ensure the smooth conduct of the games and adherence to the scheduled timings, which are important for broadcasters and fans alike.

The incident highlights the importance of on-field discipline and the consequences teams and their captains can face when they fail to comply with the IPL’s standards.

Sunil Narine's IPL Transformation Credited to Gautam Gambhir's Guidance

Sunil Narine’s IPL Transformation Credited to Gautam Gambhir’s Guidance

Sunil Narine’s remarkable transformation as an opener for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the ongoing IPL season has been attributed to the guidance of team mentor Gautam Gambhir. Narine’s impressive performance at the top of the order, amassing 276 runs in six games, stands in stark contrast to his previous three seasons, where he scored only 154 runs while batting lower in the order.

After his memorable century at Eden Gardens, Narine acknowledged Gambhir’s role in making him open for the first time since 2017. Teammates like Rinku Singh have also reiterated this sentiment, stating, “You can see the way Narine is batting this time. In every match, he’s making runs, opening the batting and that was his (Gambhir’s) idea only.”

Narine’s transformation as a batsman is evident in his improved stroke-making and patience at the crease. Rinku attributed this change to Narine’s hard work in the nets, saying, “Nothing much has changed. It’s the result of his sheer hard work at the nets.” He also noted that Narine has become more thoughtful and wise in his approach, playing according to the merit of the ball.

Despite Narine’s impressive century, Rajasthan Royals emerged victorious, thanks to Jos Buttler’s unbeaten 107 off 60 balls. Rinku acknowledged Buttler’s innings as the turning point and credited Rajasthan Royals for their performance. He also mentioned that luck played a role in the outcome of the match.

With KKR’s top-order performing well this season, Rinku, who was their leading run-getter in IPL 2023, has had fewer opportunities to showcase his batting skills. However, he maintains a strike rate of over 184 and is confident of returning to playing full matches after recovering from a niggle that limited him to the role of an Impact Sub in the previous game.

Shamar Joseph's IPL Debut Turns into a Nightmare for Lucknow Super Giants

Shamar Joseph’s IPL Debut Turns into a Nightmare for Lucknow Super Giants

West Indies speedster Shamar Joseph made his much-anticipated Indian Premier League (IPL) debut for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on Saturday. However, his maiden outing proved to be a baptism of fire as he was subjected to a relentless onslaught from the KKR batters.

Joseph, who rose to prominence with a seven-wicket haul in West Indies’ historic Test victory over Australia in January, was signed by LSG as a replacement for Mark Wood for the 2024 season. The 25-year-old pacer was expected to provide LSG with much-needed firepower with his raw pace and impressive bowling skills.

After LSG posted a competitive total of 161/7, skipper KL Rahul handed Joseph the ball to open the attack. However, Joseph’s debut over turned into a nightmare as he conceded 22 runs, including two no-balls and a wide. The KKR batters, led by Venkatesh Iyer and Nitish Rana, took full advantage of Joseph’s wayward bowling, smashing him for boundaries and sixes.

Rahul was quick to offer words of encouragement to his struggling bowler, but Joseph’s struggles continued throughout his spell. He finished with figures of 0/43 in his four overs, the most expensive bowling performance by an LSG bowler in the match.

Despite his disappointing debut, Joseph remains a highly-rated prospect. His raw pace and potential make him a valuable asset for LSG, and he will be hoping to bounce back from this setback in his next outing.

Shah Rukh Khan and Family Cheer KKR at Eden Gardens

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, along with his children Suhana Khan and AbRam, graced the Eden Gardens in Kolkata for the IPL 2024 match between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on Sunday. The appearance of the Khan family, accompanied by actress Ananya Pandey, added a touch of glamour to the high-octane encounter.

SRK, who is also the owner of the KKR franchise, has been a regular presence at the team’s matches this season. The presence of his young son, AbRam, further amplified the excitement among fans. Videos of the celebrities arriving in Kolkata for the match went viral on social media, with fans expressing their delight at seeing the father-son duo cheering for KKR.

KKR, under the leadership of Shreyas Iyer, had made a strong start to the season, winning their first four matches. However, their winning streak was snapped by Chennai Super Kings in their previous outing. In the match against LSG, Iyer opted to field after winning the toss.

KKR has been heavily reliant on their veteran all-rounders, Andre Russell and Sunil Narine, this season. The fast bowlers have also played a crucial role in the team’s success. The franchise will be hoping to bounce back from their defeat against CSK and maintain their unbeaten record at Eden Gardens.

The LSG team, led by KL Rahul, boasts a formidable lineup of its own. Quinton de Kock, Deepak Hooda, Marcus Stoinis, and Nicholas Pooran are among the key players to watch out for. The team will be aiming to continue their winning ways and challenge KKR for the top spot in the standings.

The match promises to be a thrilling contest between two evenly matched teams. The presence of Shah Rukh Khan and his family is sure to add to the atmosphere and make it a memorable occasion for fans of both KKR and LSG.

Kolkata Knight Riders’ Gautam Gambhir Spreads Sweetness on Bengali New Year Eve

In a heartwarming gesture, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) mentor Gautam Gambhir distributed sweets to media personnel on the eve of Bengali New Year. The thoughtful act came after KKR’s pre-match press conference ahead of their clash against Lucknow Super Giants at the Eden Gardens on Sunday.

“It’s new year tomorrow, so we have got sweets for you guys. So please feel free and put some calories on,” said a smiling Gambhir before distributing Rasgullas.

The gesture was met with appreciation and delight from the media contingent, who enjoyed the sweet treats distributed by KKR’s “Guru Gambhir.”

The Bengali New Year, also known as Poila Boishakh, is celebrated on April 14th. Coincidentally, KKR will also play their home game on the same day, adding to the festive atmosphere.

With three wins in four matches, KKR currently sit at the second spot on the Indian Premier League (IPL) points table, behind Rajasthan Royals. The team has been in impressive form, with Andre Russell and Venkatesh Iyer leading the charge with their explosive batting.

Gambhir’s gesture not only spread sweetness but also highlighted the strong bond between KKR and the media. The team’s success on the field has been complemented by their off-field initiatives, which have endeared them to fans and the media alike.

As KKR prepares for their upcoming match against Lucknow Super Giants, the team will be hoping to continue their winning ways and spread more joy to their supporters. The Bengali New Year celebrations will provide an added boost to the team’s morale as they look to maintain their position at the top of the IPL standings.

Gambhir Defends KKR Coach Pandit Amid Criticism

Gambhir Defends KKR Coach Pandit Amid Criticism

Gautam Gambhir, the mentor of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), has expressed his positive experience working with head coach Chandrakant Pandit, despite recent criticism from former KKR player David Wiese.

Wiese had criticized Pandit’s coaching style as “militant” in a recent podcast, claiming that it had caused dissatisfaction among players. However, Gambhir, who joined KKR this season, has a different perspective.

“I have not heard about any criticism,” Gambhir said. “It’s been early days, and my working relationship with him has been really very good. Hopefully, it will continue that way.”

Gambhir acknowledged Pandit’s successful track record in Indian domestic cricket, particularly with Mumbai, Vidarbha, and Madhya Pradesh in the Ranji Trophy. He believes that Pandit’s experience is valuable for KKR.

“Whatever has been said, I have no clue about it,” Gambhir added. “I think he has been pretty successful in first-class cricket, and that is the reason why he has got this opportunity. So far, it has been really good working with him.”

Gambhir’s comments are in contrast to Wiese’s, who claimed that Pandit’s strict discipline and authoritarian approach did not sit well with some overseas players. However, Gambhir has not witnessed any such issues.

KKR all-rounder Andre Russell has also praised Pandit, saying that he has been doing an “amazing job.”

Despite the contrasting views, it remains to be seen how Pandit’s coaching style will ultimately impact KKR’s performance in the upcoming IPL season.

Gambhir Defends Starc's IPL Performance, Emphasizes Team Success

Gambhir Defends Starc’s IPL Performance, Emphasizes Team Success

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) mentor Gautam Gambhir has defended Mitchell Starc’s underwhelming performance in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL), emphasizing the team’s success over individual brilliance. Despite being acquired for a hefty ₹24.75 crore, the Australian left-arm pacer has managed only two wickets at an average of 77 and an economy rate of 11 runs per over in four matches.

Gambhir, however, remains unfazed by Starc’s struggles, stating, “It doesn’t matter, T20 cricket is all about bowlers getting smashed. We’ve got three wins out of four.” He believes that Starc’s impact will be felt in the tournament’s later stages.

“Four games doesn’t make him a bad bowler. And four good games doesn’t make him a brilliant bowler either. So I know that what impact he can create and what impact he will create in the competition,” Gambhir said.

Gambhir’s comments come ahead of KKR’s match against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), a team he mentored for the past two seasons. Despite KKR’s inability to defeat LSG in three previous encounters, Gambhir insists that it’s a new start.

“It’s a new day, new start. What difference does it make that what has happened in the last two years? It really makes no difference. We start from scratch,” he said.

Gambhir also addressed criticism of KKR head coach Chandrakant Pandit’s “militant style” of functioning. “My working relationship with him has been really, really good and hopefully it continues that way,” he said.
