Mysore Warriors emerged victorious in the Maharaja Trophy KSCA T20 tournament, claiming a 45-run triumph over Bengaluru Blasters in the final at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.

Batting first, the Warriors amassed a formidable total of 207 for four wickets. Opener S.U. Karthik set the tone with a blistering 71 off 44 deliveries, including seven boundaries and three sixes. Skipper Karun Nair contributed a steady 66 off 45 balls, hitting six fours and three sixes.

The Warriors’ middle order provided valuable support. Manoj Bhandage played a whirlwind knock of 44 not out off just 13 deliveries, smashing three sixes and a four off the final four balls of the innings. This late surge propelled the Warriors’ total beyond the 200-run mark.

In response, the Blasters struggled to keep pace with the Warriors’ imposing target. L.R. Chethan top-scored with 51, while M. Kranthikumar remained unbeaten on 39. However, the Blasters’ chase was hampered by the Warriors’ disciplined bowling attack.

All-rounder Vidyadhar Patil was the pick of the bowlers, claiming three wickets for 19 runs. Senior off-spinner K. Gowtham also chipped in with two wickets for 23 runs. The Blasters were eventually restricted to 162 for eight wickets, falling short of the Warriors’ total.

The Warriors’ victory marked their second Maharaja Trophy triumph, having previously won the tournament in 2014 when it was known as the Karnataka Premier League. The team’s success was a testament to their fine batting performance and first-rate bowling.

Batting first, Mysore got off to a slow start, reaching 61/2 in 8 overs. However, Nair, who joined skipper Samit Dravid at the crease, accelerated the innings, adding 36 runs in 21 balls. After Dravid’s dismissal, Nair took charge, hitting boundaries at will.

In the last 29 balls of the innings, Nair and Manoj Bhandage (31 not out off 14 balls) plundered 85 runs, leaving the Dragons bowlers helpless. Nair’s innings included 13 fours and 9 sixes, with a staggering strike rate of 258.33.

In response, the Dragons struggled to keep up with the Warriors’ total, reaching only 138/7 in 14 overs before rain interrupted the match. Only wicketkeeper-batsman K Siddharth (50 off 27 balls) and Nikin Jose (32 off 21 balls) offered any resistance.

Nair’s blistering knock was a reminder of his talent and potential. The 31-year-old has played six Tests and two ODIs for India, but has not been able to cement his place in the national team. However, his performance in the Maharaja Trophy suggests that he is still a force to be reckoned with.

The Warriors’ victory was their second in the tournament, while the Dragons suffered their first defeat. The tournament, which features eight teams from Karnataka, is a platform for young and talented players to showcase their skills.

Vyshak Vijaykumar, the vice-captain and pacer of Gulbarga Mystics, is poised to showcase his enhanced skills and bolstered self-assurance in the upcoming Maharaja Trophy Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) T20 tournament.

During the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, Vyshak made a significant impact for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) franchise, claiming four wickets in four matches. His impactful bowling spells proved to be game-changers, helping RCB secure victories.

Inspired by his RCB teammates like Virat Kohli and Mohammed Siraj, Vyshak has adopted a meticulous approach to his game. “Training with Virat Kohli can really impact you as a player,” he remarked. “I paid attention to his work ethic, process, and consistency. Everything he does is done with precision.”

As a seasoned member of the Gulbarga Mystics, Vyshak will mentor and guide the less experienced players. He will draw upon the wisdom imparted to him by his own mentors, such as Siraj, who provided invaluable guidance during his early days in the squad.

“In my first game for RCB, I did well, but then I conceded 60 runs in the next match,” Vyshak recalled. “Siraj told me, ‘This is the game, and this is the challenge at the highest level.’ I am keen to keep this in mind and to pass on these lessons whenever I can.”

Vyshak is determined to surpass the obstacles faced by the Mystics in the previous season, when they finished third without the services of Devdutt Padikkal. “Missing Devdutt made a big difference last season,” he said. “We want to finish stronger this year. We bat deep, and I have been batting well too, so I am hoping to contribute with the bat as well.”

Although stepping down from captaincy, Vyshak is excited to work alongside Padikkal as vice-captain. “I love captaincy, but with Devdutt’s experience and recently his India debut, I am looking forward to supporting him as the vice-captain,” he added.

Vyshak credits the Maharaja Trophy for helping launch his IPL career. “The first season of Maharaja got me noticed and led to my IPL debut,” he remarked. “This platform provided by KSCA is exceptional and a huge opportunity for all of us.”

The Gulbarga Mystics will commence their journey in the Maharaja Trophy KSCA T20 on August 15, facing the Bengaluru Blasters in the tournament’s opening encounter.

Samit Dravid Bags Maiden Maharaja Trophy Contract with Mysuru Warriors

Samit Dravid, the son of legendary Indian cricketer Rahul Dravid, has secured his first professional contract in the Maharaja Trophy KSCA T20 tournament. The 18-year-old all-rounder was acquired by last season’s runner-up, Mysuru Warriors, for a sum of INR 50,000 at the auction held in Bengaluru.

Dravid, a promising medium-pacer and middle-order batter, has already made a mark in the domestic circuit. He was part of the Karnataka Under-19 team that triumphed in the 2023-24 Cooch Behar Trophy and also represented KSCA XI in a three-day match against the visiting Lancashire side.

At Mysuru Warriors, Dravid will join a star-studded lineup led by former India Test batsman Karun Nair. The team also boasts experienced all-rounders K Gowtham and J Suchith, as well as fast bowler Prasidh Krishna, who is currently recovering from surgery.

The most expensive player at the auction was wicketkeeper-batter LR Chethan, who was snapped up by Bengaluru Blasters for INR 8.2 lakh. Blasters will be captained by Mayank Agarwal, who was retained along with several other key players.

Defending champions Hubli Tigers secured the services of legspinner KC Cariappa for INR 4.2 lakh. They will once again be led by Manish Pandey and also have fast bowler Vidwath Kaverappa in their ranks.

The 2024 season of the Maharaja Trophy is expected to take place from September 15 to October 1, with all matches scheduled to be played at the iconic Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
