Three Americans Triumph at Rolex Shanghai Masters
The Rolex Shanghai Masters witnessed a surge of American success on Monday, with Taylor Fritz, Frances Tiafoe, and Marcos Giron securing victories.
Fritz, the US Open finalist, faced a stern test from qualifier Terence Atmane. Despite rain delays, Fritz prevailed in a hard-fought 7-6 (4), 7-6 (5) battle. The American saved crucial break points and held off Atmane’s challenge, setting up a clash with another qualifier, Yosuke Watanuki.
Tiafoe, seeded 13th, dispatched Zhou Yi in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4. The American converted three of his four break point opportunities and will face Roman Safiullin in the round of 16. Tiafoe praised his upcoming opponent as a “super dark horse” capable of upsetting top players.
Giron, ranked 47th in the world, upset 24th-seeded Karen Khachanov, 6-4, 6-3. The American served impeccably, firing eight aces and not dropping his serve. Giron will now face David Goffin, who rallied from a set and a break down to defeat Lorenzo Musetti.
In other notable matches, 12th seed Holger Rune overcame Matteo Berrettini in three sets, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. Rune, fresh off a semifinal appearance in Tokyo, will face Goffin in the third round.
The Rolex Shanghai Masters continues to showcase the depth of American tennis, with Fritz, Tiafoe, and Giron all vying for a spot in the quarterfinals.
