Dwayne Bravo Appointed Mentor of Kolkata Knight Riders

Dwayne Bravo, the former West Indies captain and renowned all-rounder, has expressed his gratitude to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) co-owner Shah Rukh Khan and the management for appointing him as the franchise’s mentor. Bravo’s appointment extends to KKR’s sister franchises in the Caribbean Premier League, Major League Cricket, and ILT20.

In a heartfelt video message, Bravo thanked his former team, Chennai Super Kings (CSK), for their support and blessings as he embarks on this new chapter in his coaching career. Bravo, who retired from the IPL in 2021, served as the franchise’s bowling coach in the 2022 and 2023 seasons.

“I want to say a big, big thank you to the Knight Riders family and the management for trusting me, giving me the opportunity to be a part of a very special franchise,” Bravo said. “I also want to thank the management and staff of the Chennai Super Kings for giving me the blessings to move on and carry on in my journey.”

Bravo recalled a message from KKR co-owner Shah Rukh Khan, who encouraged him to continue “partying and winning trophies” in the years to come. “So now, with that being said, I look forward to doing my best and I look forward to doing great things with the team in Purple,” Bravo added.

Bravo’s stint with KKR marks his second coaching role in the IPL. He joined CSK in 2011, retired from the franchise in 2022, and returned in 2023 as the bowling coach. The decorated Caribbean star has lifted four IPL titles with CSK in various roles.

With 183 wickets, Bravo is the third-highest wicket-taker in IPL history. He is also the first player to win two purple caps in the tournament, in 2013 and 2015. Bravo’s appointment as KKR mentor is a testament to his vast experience and leadership qualities, which are expected to guide the franchise to future success.

Dwayne Bravo, the legendary West Indies all-rounder, has bid farewell to Chennai Super Kings (CSK) after a remarkable journey that spanned four IPL titles. He will now embark on a new chapter as a mentor for defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) from the 2025 season onwards.

Bravo, who turns 41 in October, will replace Gautam Gambhir, who recently took over as India’s head coach until 2027. The move comes a day after Bravo announced his retirement from all forms of cricket.

According to ESPNcricinfo, Bravo recently met with KKR CEO Venky Mysore during the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) before agreeing to the contract. In addition to KKR, he will also oversee all franchises under the Knight Riders umbrella in various T20 leagues, including Trinbago Knight Riders (CPL), Los Angeles Knight Riders (MLC), and Abu Dhabi Knight Riders (ILT20).

“DJ Bravo joining us is an exciting development,” Mysore said in a statement. “His relentless drive to win, along with his vast experience and deep knowledge, will greatly benefit our franchise and players.”

Bravo expressed his excitement about the new role, saying, “I’ve been part of the Trinbago Knight Riders for the last 10 years in the CPL. Having played for and against the Knight Riders in various leagues, I have a lot of respect for how they operate. The owners’ passion, the professionalism of the management, and the family-like environment make it a special place.”

This will be Bravo’s second coaching stint in the IPL. After retiring from the IPL as a player in 2022, he joined CSK as their bowling coach for the 2023 season. Having won the IPL three times as a player, Bravo continued his success in his first coaching assignment, guiding CSK to victory over defending champions Gujarat Titans in 2023.

Widely regarded as one of the best death bowlers in T20 cricket, Bravo is the third-highest wicket-taker in IPL history and the first player to win two purple caps in the tournament. With over 500 T20 appearances to his name, he is known for his tactical acumen and motivational skills, qualities that earned him the West Indies captaincy.

Bravo retired from international cricket after the 2021 T20 World Cup but continued to play in T20 leagues. He also played a key role as a consultant coach for Afghanistan during the 2024 T20 World Cup, helping the team reach the semi-finals for the first time.

Zaheer Khan Appointed Mentor of Lucknow Super Giants for IPL Mega Auction

Zaheer Khan Appointed Mentor of Lucknow Super Giants for IPL Mega Auction

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), a young franchise in the Indian Premier League (IPL), has appointed former India pacer Zaheer Khan as its mentor ahead of the upcoming mega auction. LSG owner Sanjiv Goenka, impressed by Zaheer’s experience as a player, coach, and strategist, hired him in the last two weeks.

“We are very excited to have him on board. We do believe he will do wonders for the future of LSG,” said Goenka at a press conference.

Zaheer, who previously worked with Mumbai Indians, acknowledged LSG’s potential despite its short existence. “The building blocks are in place,” he said. “The consistency you see in reaching the playoffs is something which is so tough in this fierce competition. That is something which gives me a lot of confidence when I’m looking at coming and contributing to this franchise’s success.”

Zaheer emphasized his role in fostering a culture of open communication and decision-making. “I’ll make sure a process which is required for each and every individual to express themselves freely, to bring a lot of victories to the franchise and the decision making which is so crucial. I think those are the aspects which we’ll be closely looking at. I’m looking to build that culture, that mindset at LSG to (help it) go to the next level,” said Zaheer, who will also serve as the bowling coach.

Goenka refrained from providing details about the possible team composition, citing the BCCI’s upcoming announcement of its player retention policy for the mega auction. However, he expressed confidence in LSG captain K.L. Rahul, stating that he is “like family” and will continue to play an important role.

Coach Justin Langer, assistant coach Lance Klusener, and fielding coach Jonty Rhodes will remain with the team.

Zaheer Khan Set to Join Lucknow Super Giants as Mentor

Zaheer Khan, the former Indian fast bowler, is poised to join the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) franchise as their mentor, succeeding Gautam Gambhir, who departed after the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL) season. Gambhir has since assumed the role of mentor at Kolkata Knight Riders for IPL 2024 and has recently been appointed head coach of the Indian men’s cricket team.

Zaheer’s potential appointment as LSG’s mentor raises questions about whether he will also assume the role of bowling coach, a position vacated by Morne Morkel, who joined Gambhir’s coaching staff with the Indian team. From 2018 to 2022, Zaheer held various positions with the Mumbai Indians (MI) franchise, including director of cricket and head of global development.

Prior to his administrative roles, Zaheer enjoyed a successful playing career in the IPL, representing three different teams: MI, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Delhi Daredevils. Over ten seasons, he amassed 102 wickets in 100 matches, maintaining an impressive economy rate of 7.58. His last IPL appearance came in 2017 while leading the Daredevils, before he retired from all forms of cricket.

As reported by ESPNcricinfo, LSG intends to grant Zaheer a broader role beyond mentorship, involving him in scouting and player development programs during the off-season. The franchise’s coaching setup is currently led by Justin Langer, who replaced Andy Flower as head coach ahead of IPL 2024. Lance Klusener and Adam Voges serve as his assistants.

After securing playoff berths in their first two seasons, LSG narrowly missed out on a top-four finish in 2024 due to net run rate. Zaheer’s potential return to the IPL coincides with teams preparing for a mega auction, with the IPL expected to announce retention rules by early September.

Lucknow Super Giants in Talks with Zaheer Khan for Mentor Role

The Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), an Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise, is reportedly in negotiations with former Indian pace bowler Zaheer Khan for the role of mentor. This move comes after the departure of Gautam Gambhir, who left the franchise in 2023 to join the Kolkata Knight Riders.

Zaheer, 45, is a highly respected figure in Indian cricket, having played 92 Tests, 200 ODIs, and 17 T20Is for the national team. He was known for his exceptional bowling skills and his ability to mentor young fast bowlers.

If the negotiations are successful, Zaheer will fill the void created by the departures of Gambhir and bowling coach Morne Morkel, who has joined Team India in the same capacity. Sources within the IPL indicate that Zaheer is being considered for the role previously held by Gambhir.

Zaheer was initially considered for the bowling coach position under Gambhir’s new set-up in Team India, but the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) reportedly preferred Morkel on Gambhir’s recommendation.

During his playing career, Zaheer was recognized for his role in mentoring young fast bowlers within the Indian team. If he joins LSG, he will be collaborating with head coach Justin Langer and a robust coaching team, including Adam Voges, Lance Klusener, and Jonty Rhodes.

The report also indicates that another notable coach may be added to the Sanjiv Goenka-owned franchise, though details are not yet clear.

LSG, which came into existence in 2022, reached the play-offs in their first two seasons. However, they missed out on a top-four spot in the 2023 edition due to an inferior Net Run Rate (NRR).

Meanwhile, the BCCI is expected to announce the retention rules by the month’s end. Teams are projected to be allowed around six retentions, including the Right to Match (RTM) option. Despite calls from some franchises to discontinue the Big Auction, the BCCI plans to retain it for now.

Gautam Gambhir's Return Inspires KKR's Resurgence in IPL 2024

Gautam Gambhir’s Return Inspires KKR’s Resurgence in IPL 2024

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have emerged as the frontrunners in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, dominating the points table with 16 points from 12 matches. The resurgence of KKR has been largely attributed to the astute guidance of mentor and former captain Gautam Gambhir.

Gambhir, who led KKR to two IPL titles in 2012 and 2014, returned to the franchise as a mentor prior to the ongoing season. His presence has instilled a winning mentality within the team, which is now on the cusp of securing a playoff berth.

During a recent interaction, a KKR fan expressed his heartfelt gratitude to Gambhir, who was visibly moved by the gesture. The fan, overcome with emotion, implored Gambhir to remain with the franchise indefinitely.

“Please don’t leave us again. We can’t express how heartbroken we were when you left KKR,” the fan said. “You are our heart. We keep you close to our heart. Please don’t leave us ever, again.”

Since his return, Gambhir has been actively involved in the dugout, providing tactical advice to captain Shreyas Iyer. His decision to promote Sunil Narine as an opener alongside Phil Salt has proven to be a masterstroke.

The duo has been instrumental in providing KKR with solid starts, laying the foundation for the team’s impressive run-scoring. Narine, in particular, has been a revelation, emerging as the second-highest six-hitter in the tournament with 32 maximums.

With one century and three fifties, Narine has also been KKR’s leading run-getter, amassing 461 runs at a strike rate of 183.66. Salt, the World No.2 T20I batter, has contributed 429 runs at a strike rate of 183.33.

Gambhir’s influence has extended beyond the opening partnership. He has fostered a positive and cohesive team environment, which has been evident in KKR’s consistent performances. The team’s ability to adapt to different conditions and overcome challenges has been a testament to Gambhir’s leadership and tactical acumen.

As KKR continues its pursuit of a third IPL title, Gambhir’s presence will undoubtedly be a key factor in their success. His experience, tactical brilliance, and unwavering commitment have made him an indispensable asset to the franchise.
