Mumbai All-Rounder Musheer Khan Ruled Out for Three Months After Road Accident

Mumbai all-rounder Musheer Khan, the younger brother of India batter Sarfaraz Khan, has suffered a major setback after being involved in a road accident on the outskirts of Lucknow. The 19-year-old sustained neck injuries in the accident and is expected to be out of action for at least three months, ruling him out of the upcoming Irani Cup and the start of the Ranji Trophy 2024-25 season.

Musheer was traveling from his hometown Azamgarh to Lucknow for the Irani Cup, which begins on October 1, when his car hit a divider and overturned on the Purvanchal Expressway. His father, Naushad Khan, who was also in the car, suffered minor scratches.

Musheer was rushed to Medanta Hospital in Lucknow, where he is currently undergoing treatment. Dr. Bhola Singh, Medical Superintendent at the hospital, said that the cricketer is out of danger and his condition is stable.

“Cricketer Musheer Khan, injured in a road accident on the Purvanchal Expressway, was brought to the emergency department of Medanta Hospital due to pain in his neck. His treatment is being conducted under the supervision of Dr. Dharmendra Singh, Director of the Department of Orthopedics,” Dr. Singh said in a statement.

“His condition is stable and he is out of danger,” he added.

The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) said that Musheer is currently “stable, conscious, and well-oriented.”

“He has sustained a fracture in the neck region and is under close observation. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) medical teams are closely monitoring his progress to ensure he receives the best possible care,” the MCA said.

“Once Musheer is deemed medically fit for travel, he will be flown to Mumbai for further evaluation and additional medical treatment. The timeline for his recovery will be determined following these assessments.”

The accident is a major blow for Musheer, who has emerged as a promising all-rounder in recent times. He has already scored three centuries and a half-century in nine First-Class games, including a double hundred in last season’s Ranji Trophy quarter-final and a match-winning century in the final against Vidarbha.

He had also begun the 2024-25 domestic season with a hundred in the Duleep Trophy for India B against India A in Bengaluru recently.

Reigning Ranji Trophy champions Mumbai are slated to take on Rest of India in the Irani Cup match at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow from October 1-5. After the Irani game, Mumbai will begin their Ranji campaign on October 11 against Baroda.

Former India pacer Dhawal Kulkarni has underscored the paramount importance of domestic cricket for aspiring Test cricketers. Kulkarni, who retired last season after an illustrious 18-year domestic career, believes that consistent performances in domestic red-ball competitions are crucial for Test selection.

“Playing domestic cricket is very important if you want to play Test cricket for India,” Kulkarni asserted. “It is not easy to perform consistently in domestic cricket, but it is essential for Test aspirations.”

Kulkarni highlighted the value of domestic cricket in providing players with a deep understanding of conditions and the challenges of playing in different environments. “You get the idea of conditions in domestic cricket,” he explained. “There is no option other than domestic cricket to play Test.”

While acknowledging the importance of the Indian Premier League (IPL), Kulkarni emphasized that domestic cricket should take precedence for players aiming to represent India in Test matches. “IPL is also important, but I give more importance to domestic cricket,” he said.

Reflecting on his own career, Kulkarni expressed satisfaction with his achievements, which include five Ranji Trophy titles with Mumbai. He retired last season to make way for younger fast bowlers in the Mumbai team.

“I planned to retire well in advance last season,” Kulkarni said. “I thought this was the right time for them [young fast bowlers] to come into the team and perform.”

Kulkarni’s retirement coincided with Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy triumph, a fitting end to his illustrious domestic career. “I bagged the first and last wicket in that match, so it was a proper send-off for me,” he said.

Ajinkya Rahane to Establish Cricket Academy at Bandra Reclamation

Mumbai’s Bandra Reclamation to House Ajinkya Rahane’s Cricket Academy

The Maharashtra state cabinet has approved the allotment of a 2,000 square meter plot at Bandra reclamation to former India and current Mumbai captain Ajinkya Rahane for the development of a cricket academy. The plot was initially allocated to Sunil Gavaskar in 1988 for an indoor training academy, but the legendary cricketer returned it to the state government in May 2022.

According to a Maharashtra cabinet note, Rahane has been granted the land parcel on a 30-year lease. The note stipulates that 15% of the trainees at Rahane’s cricket academy must be underprivileged children, and the construction of the academy must be completed within two years of Rahane taking possession of the land.

Mumbai BJP president and Bandra MLA Ashish Shelar, who is also the treasurer of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), played a key role in securing the land for Rahane’s academy. Shelar had taken up the issue with the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (Mhada) and Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, and had written to government authorities regarding the matter.

An official stated that the plot was previously allotted to Sunil Gavaskar in 1988 for an indoor cricket training center. However, due to the lack of progress on the project, the government reclaimed the land. The current condition of the plot is reportedly poor.

Rahane expressed his gratitude on social media, stating, “Thank you… for supporting my vision of a world-class cricket academy & sports facility in Mumbai. This academy will empower young sportspersons with top-notch facilities & guidance, fostering the next generation of champions in the city…”

The allotment of the land to Rahane is a significant development for cricket in Mumbai. The academy is expected to provide young cricketers with access to state-of-the-art facilities and expert coaching, helping them to develop their skills and pursue their dreams of playing at the highest level.

Kotian credited Rahane for helping him unlock his batting potential, which resulted in over 500 runs. “Last year I got a bit more confidence in my batting and I worked hard with my father. Ajju dada (that’s how youngsters in Mumbai team address him) also helped me a lot,” Kotian said.

Rahane acknowledged the contributions of retiring veteran Dhawal Kulkarni, who has played six finals for Mumbai and won five Ranji Trophy titles. “We have played for Mumbai since our U-14 days. We toured for India U-19 (New Zealand). Whatever I say in his praise would be less. His contribution is laudable. Off-field experience sharing and not also with those not in team.”

He followed it up with a quickfire 33 off 25 balls in the second innings, helping Mumbai secure a draw and advance on the basis of their first-innings lead.

In three matches so far, Musheer has amassed 433 runs at an astonishing average of 108.25, including two centuries and a half-century. His best score remains his 203* against Baroda.

Musheer’s talent extends beyond batting. In the U19 World Cup tournament, he played seven matches, scoring 360 runs at an average of 60, with a strike rate of over 98. He scored two centuries and a fifty, ending as the second-highest run-scorer in the tournament. His best score was an impressive 131.

Additionally, Musheer has played 14 Youth ODIs, scoring 554 runs at an average of 61.55, with two centuries and two fifties. With 13 wickets, he is also a useful spin-bowling all-rounder.

Musheer’s achievements have not gone unnoticed. His elder brother, Sarfaraz, recently made his much-anticipated international debut against England, scoring twin half-centuries in his first Test match.
