Mumbai Indians (MI), the five-time Indian Premier League (IPL) champions, are set to retain four key players ahead of the upcoming ‘Big Auction’ in November, according to a report in The Indian Express. The retained players are expected to include former skipper Rohit Sharma, all-rounder Hardik Pandya, fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, and batter Suryakumar Yadav.

The deadline for submitting the list of retained players is October 31. As per IPL regulations, a franchise can retain up to six players, with a maximum of five capped players (Indian or overseas) and two uncapped players.

The cost of retaining Rohit, Hardik, Bumrah, and Surya will significantly impact MI’s purse. The report estimates that the franchise will have to shell out Rs 61 crore from its Rs 120 crore purse to retain these four players.

Rohit Sharma, the former Indian captain, is expected to be retained as the first player at a cost of Rs 18 crore. Hardik Pandya, who took over the captaincy from Rohit before the 2024 season, is also likely to be retained for Rs 14 crore. Jasprit Bumrah, one of the world’s leading fast bowlers, is expected to be retained for Rs 11 crore, while Suryakumar Yadav, a prolific batter, is likely to be retained for Rs 18 crore.

The report also suggests that MI will target wicketkeeper-batsman Ishan Kishan at the auction and use the Right to Match (RTM) card for Australian big-hitter Tim David.

Former India seamer Paras Mhambrey has been appointed as Mumbai Indians’ bowling coach ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season. Mhambrey, who previously served as MI’s assistant coach, will work alongside current bowling coach Lasith Malinga under newly appointed head coach Mahela Jayawardene.

Mhambrey brings a wealth of experience to the role, having served as India’s bowling coach from 2021 to August 2023 under Rahul Dravid. During his tenure, India won the T20 World Cup in the Caribbean. He was also part of the MI setup when the team won the IPL in 2013 and the Champions League T20 in 2011 and 2013.

In addition to his international and IPL experience, Mhambrey has also coached in Indian domestic cricket. He oversaw the India A team and helped Bengal reach successive Ranji Trophy finals in 2005-06 and 2006-07.

As a player, Mhambrey represented India in two Tests and three ODIs between 1996 and 1998. He played for Mumbai in domestic cricket, taking 284 wickets in 91 first-class games and 111 wickets in 83 List A games.

Mhambrey’s appointment is part of a wider coaching staff overhaul at MI. On Sunday, the franchise announced the return of former Sri Lanka captain Jayawardene as their head coach. The coaching staff’s first task will be to finalize Mumbai’s retentions ahead of the October 31 deadline.

MI finished at the bottom of the table in IPL 2024 with just four wins in 14 games under new captain Hardik Pandya. The team will be hoping that the new coaching staff can help them return to their former glory in the upcoming season.

IPL 2025 Auction Venue Uncertain, Mumbai Indians Reunite with Mahela Jayawardene

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 auction is set to take place outside India, with Singapore emerging as a potential venue. The auction, scheduled for late November, was previously held in Dubai but may be moved to Saudi Arabia or Singapore due to cost concerns.

Meanwhile, five-time IPL champions Mumbai Indians have reappointed Mahela Jayawardene as their head coach. Jayawardene previously held the position from 2017 to 2022, leading the team to three championships. He returns after a brief stint as the franchise’s Global Head of Cricket.

Jayawardene’s first task will be to finalize Mumbai Indians’ strategy for the IPL 2025 mega auction. Teams are allowed to retain six players from their existing squad, either five capped (Indian or overseas) and a maximum of two uncapped.

The IPL 2025 auction is expected to be a major event, with several top players set to go under the hammer. The auction will also be crucial for Mumbai Indians, who have struggled in recent seasons. Jayawardene’s return is seen as a positive step for the franchise, as he has a proven track record of success in the IPL.

Rohit Sharma’s Future at Mumbai Indians Uncertain Ahead of IPL Mega Auction

With the Indian Premier League (IPL) mega auction looming, the future of India captain Rohit Sharma at Mumbai Indians (MI) remains uncertain. Rohit was surprisingly removed as captain by MI last season, with the franchise handing over the leadership duties to Hardik Pandya, who was traded from Gujarat Titans (GT).

All 10 IPL teams can retain up to six players ahead of the auction. However, there is no clarity whether MI will retain Rohit, or will the six-time IPL winner enter the auction for the first time in 13 years.

According to recent reports, multiple franchises are interested in acquiring Rohit, including the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). During a recent interaction with India cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin, a fan expressed his excitement over the possibility of having Virat Kohli and Rohit in the same team.

Reacting to the fan’s wish, Ashwin said that RCB would have to keep at least Rs 20 crore aside for Rohit at the auction table. “Agar Rohit Sharma ke liye aap jaa rahe hai to 20 crore rakhna padega (You need to keep 20 crores with yourself if you want to sign up Rohit Sharma),” Ashwin said during a discussion on his YouTube channel.

MI had traded Hardik from GT ahead of IPL 2024. However, the decision to sack Rohit as captain wasn’t welcomed by the fans. In the end, MI finished last in the 10-team points table.

With as many as 6 players allowed by the BCCI, including Right-To-Match, some tough decisions are expected to unfold in the coming months. It is the discretion of the franchise to choose its combination for Retentions and RTMs. The 6 retention/RTMs can have a maximum of 5 capped players (Indian & Overseas) and a maximum of 2 uncapped players.

Rohit, who joined MI ahead of IPL 2011, led the franchise to five IPL titles. His departure would mark a significant change for MI, who have been one of the most successful teams in IPL history.

Former Sri Lankan captain Mahela Jayawardene has been reappointed as the head coach of the Mumbai Indians franchise in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Jayawardene previously held the position from 2017 to 2022, leading the team to three IPL titles.

After stepping down as head coach, Jayawardene took on the role of Global Head of Cricket for the Mumbai Indians, overseeing the franchise’s cricketing operations across all levels. However, he has now returned to the helm of the IPL team, replacing Mark Boucher, who left the position after the 2023 season.

Jayawardene expressed his excitement about his return to the Mumbai Indians, saying, “My journey within the MI family has always been one of evolution. In 2017, the focus was on bringing together a talented group of individuals to play the best cricket ever and we did very well. Now to return, at the same moment in history, where we look ahead at the future and the opportunity to further strengthen the love of MI, build on the vision of the owners, and continue to add to the history of Mumbai Indians, is an exciting challenge I am looking forward to.”

Jayawardene’s return to the Mumbai Indians is expected to bring stability and experience to the franchise. He is known for his astute tactical acumen and ability to get the best out of his players. Under his leadership, the Mumbai Indians have consistently been one of the most successful teams in the IPL, winning the title in 2017, 2019, and 2020.

The Mumbai Indians will be hoping that Jayawardene can help them regain their dominance in the IPL. The team has struggled in recent seasons, failing to qualify for the playoffs in the last two editions. Jayawardene’s experience and leadership will be crucial in guiding the Mumbai Indians back to the top of the IPL standings.

Rohit Sharma’s MI Future Uncertain Ahead of IPL Mega Auction

The Indian Premier League (IPL) mega auction is fast approaching, and the future of Mumbai Indians (MI) legend Rohit Sharma with the franchise remains uncertain. With the BCCI allowing teams to retain up to six players, including Right-To-Match (RTM), tough decisions lie ahead for MI.

Rohit’s retention status is unclear, with speculation rife that the six-time IPL winner could enter the upcoming mega auction. Last season, MI sacked Rohit as captain, appointing Hardik Pandya in his place. The decision to remove Rohit as captain was met with criticism from fans, and MI ultimately finished last in the 10-team points table.

Amid the ongoing discussions, former India and MI spinner Harbhajan Singh has weighed in on the possibility of Rohit entering the IPL auction. Harbhajan believes it would be “fascinating” to see how many teams bid for Rohit if he does enter the auction.

“It will be interesting to see whether he will be retained or not. If he goes into the auction pool, it will be fascinating to see which team bids for him. I’m sure many teams must be thinking along those lines,” Harbhajan said.

Harbhajan also praised Rohit’s leadership qualities and batting prowess, emphasizing that the 37-year-old can still command a lucrative contract if he enters the auction.

“Rohit Sharma, as a leader and a player, is amazing. He’s a top-quality player, top-quality captain, and leader. He’s a proven match-winner. Even at 37, he still has a lot of cricket left in him. If Rohit enters the auction, he will fetch big bucks. It will be exciting to see the auction unfold,” he added.

IPL franchises can now retain six players from their existing squad, either through retention or RTM. The combination of retentions and RTMs can include a maximum of five capped players (Indian and overseas) and two uncapped players.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is gearing up for its 2025 mega auction, and all eyes are on Mumbai Indians (MI) as they finalize their retentions. Former MI captain Rohit Sharma’s future with the franchise is uncertain, and his potential availability in the auction pool has sparked speculation.

Harbhajan Singh, Rohit’s former India and MI teammate, believes that the veteran opener would command a hefty price if he enters the auction. “Rohit Sharma is a top-quality player and leader. He’s a proven match-winner, and even at 37, he still has a lot of cricket left in him,” said Harbhajan. “If he goes into the auction, he will fetch big bucks.”

Harbhajan also praised Rohit’s off-field qualities, describing him as a “yaaro ka yaar” (friend of friends). “Rohit respects his elders, and that’s one of his best qualities,” he added.

Meanwhile, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi has expressed confidence that the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy will be held in Pakistan, with all teams, including India, participating. However, Harbhajan has raised safety concerns, stating that Indian players should not travel to Pakistan.

“There are significant safety concerns in Pakistan,” said Harbhajan. “I’ve always said, and I still believe, that if there’s no guarantee of safety, our players shouldn’t travel to Pakistan.”

Harbhajan also commended Jay Shah for his contributions to Indian cricket. “Having an Indian representative at the ICC level, especially as the chairman, is a huge achievement,” he said. “Under Jay Shah’s leadership, there have been many changes in Team India. Women’s cricket, in particular, has received a financial boost thanks to his efforts.”

With the Indian Premier League (IPL) mega auction on the horizon, the future of star batter Rohit Sharma at Mumbai Indians (MI) remains uncertain. Last season, MI removed Rohit as captain and appointed Hardik Pandya as his successor, a move that sparked controversy among fans who felt it was disrespectful to Rohit, who had led MI to five IPL titles. Rumors of a rift between Hardik and Rohit further fueled speculation about Rohit’s future with the franchise.

Amidst the uncertainty, former India batter Mohammed Kaif urged Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) to acquire Rohit in the upcoming auction. However, RCB legend AB de Villiers dismissed the possibility of such a move. “I almost laughed at the Rohit comment,” de Villiers said. “It would be a huge story if Rohit moved from Mumbai Indians to RCB. But I don’t see it happening. I don’t think MI will let Rohit go.”

De Villiers also expressed his support for Faf du Plessis as RCB’s captain for the upcoming season, stating that even Virat Kohli would want the veteran South African to continue. “Age is just a number,” de Villiers said. “Faf has been exceptional as a player, and I think Virat will back him with all his experience.”

IPL 2025 Auction: Mumbai Indians Face Retention Dilemma

IPL 2025 Auction: Mumbai Indians Face Retention Dilemma

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 auction is set to be a pivotal event for all 10 franchises. With a mega auction on the horizon, teams must carefully consider their retention strategies to build competitive squads.

According to the BCCI, franchises can retain a maximum of six players, either through retention or the Right to Match (RTM) option. The combination of retentions and RTMs can include up to five capped players (Indian or overseas) and two uncapped players. The auction purse for each franchise has been set at INR 120 Crore.

For five-time champions Mumbai Indians, who endured a disappointing IPL 2024 campaign, the upcoming auction holds immense significance. The team boasts a star-studded roster, including Hardik Pandya, Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan, and Tilak Varma. However, the franchise faces a crucial decision regarding player retention.

Former IPL-winning coach Tom Moody has expressed his reservations about Hardik Pandya’s potential retention at the highest price of INR 18 crore. Moody believes that Pandya’s recent struggles with fitness and performance may not warrant such a high valuation.

“When you dissect all of those areas with Hardik Pandya, does he deserve to be an 18 crore player? Is he worth it? If you’ve got to be an 18 crore player, you’ve got to be a genuine match-winner and do it regularly,” Moody said.

Moody also highlighted Mumbai Indians’ past struggles at the auction table, particularly in retaining players at inflated prices. He cited the examples of Ishan Kishan and Jofra Archer, who failed to deliver consistent returns despite their hefty price tags.

“They’ve had a little bit of a problem at the auction table the last couple of years. They’ve gotten caught up in a way too loyal in some cases and tried to retain, or get players back into their squad, which has cost them dearly,” Moody said.

The Mumbai Indians management will have to make some tough decisions regarding player retention. They must balance loyalty with performance and value for money to build a squad capable of challenging for the IPL title in 2025.

Mumbai Indians' Retention Dilemma: Bumrah or Pandya as Top Priority?

Mumbai Indians’ Retention Dilemma: Bumrah or Pandya as Top Priority?

The Indian Premier League (IPL) Governing Council has released its guidelines for player retention, sparking discussions among experts on which players franchises should prioritize ahead of the mega auction. With six players allowed for retention, including Right-To-Match, tough decisions lie ahead for teams.

For Mumbai Indians (MI), the future of former skipper Rohit Sharma is a major talking point. However, former India batter Aakash Chopra believes MI should also make a crucial call on current captain Hardik Pandya.

While many expect Hardik to be MI’s top retention, Chopra argues that Jasprit Bumrah should take that spot. He considers Bumrah the No. 1 pick across all IPL teams, making him the top priority for MI as well.

“The most difficult thing is to retain the Indian core. MI and CSK have won five trophies each, and both have had strong Indian cores. Overseas players can be replaced, but Indian players are harder to find. Can you tell me a like-for-like replacement for Jasprit Bumrah?” Chopra said.

Regarding Hardik, Chopra suggests he could be MI’s fourth pick. Suryakumar Yadav could be the second choice (in the INR 14 crore category), while Rohit, Tilak Varma, and Ishan Kishan would compete for the remaining spots.

“Indian retentions for Mumbai Indians seem straightforward. Hardik, Surya, Bumrah, you have three. After that, I think they will discuss with Rohit Sharma about the next step. It’s anybody’s guess after what has transpired. Whether he will stay in Mumbai or go elsewhere, I think it will also be his will. I think that will be a discussion. And then Ishan Kishan or Tilak Varma,” he added.

“The interesting aspect will be the order of retention. Who will be the first, who will be the second and all that? Jasprit Bumrah is my No. 1 retention. He will be the first retention in the overall IPL, across all teams. If Bumrah is your first, then you have captain Hardik Pandya. He can be your fourth retention (Rs 18 crore). Then you have India’s T20I captain, he is Suryakumar Yadav. He will be come in Rs 14 crore category. Then you have Rohit Sharma and Tilak Varma. Then there is the wicketkeeper-batter batter in Ishan Kishan, whom you retained for Rs 15 or Rs 15.5 crore. It’s going to be a tough one.”

Tim David and Piyush Chawla are also potential retention candidates for MI. While Chawla fits well in the uncapped player category, David’s chances of being retained remain uncertain.
