England Elects to Bat First Against Bangladesh in T20 World Cup Opener

In their opening match of the T20 World Cup, England has opted to bat first after winning the toss at Sharjah Cricket Stadium. Captain Heather Knight explained that the absence of dew and the ease of defending a total influenced their decision.

England’s lineup features a formidable four-woman spin attack, with Linsey Smith, Danielle Gibson, and Nat Sciver-Brunt joining Charlie Dean and Sophie Ecclestone. Smith, who has been tipped as a potential opening bowler, was preferred over Lauren Bell.

Bangladesh captain Nigar Sultana acknowledged that her team would have made the same choice, having successfully batted first against Scotland in their tournament opener. They have made one change to their side, bringing in Dilara Akter at the top of the order in place of Murshida Khatun.

“We have a very good bowling attack and will look to restrict them to a total that we can chase,” Sultana said.

Bangladesh secured a 16-run victory over Scotland in the tournament’s opening match, marking their first T20 World Cup win in a decade. However, they have a losing record against England in T20Is, having been defeated on all three previous occasions, including at the 2018 T20 World Cup in the Caribbean.

Ahead of the highly anticipated Women’s T20 World Cup 2024, Bangladesh skipper Nigar Sultana has expressed her team’s determination to make a mark on the global stage. Bangladesh will embark on their World Cup journey on Thursday, facing Scotland in their opening match.

Sultana believes that this tournament presents a golden opportunity for her team to showcase their talent and potential. “It is a huge opportunity for the team, playing this kind of event in front of the world, to show the talent and the potential we have,” she said.

The Bangladesh skipper has set a clear goal for her team: to secure a victory in every match. “Individually, this will be my fourth T20 World Cup for Bangladesh, but I’m yet to win a game – so first and foremost, as a team or as an individual player, my goal is to get a win,” Sultana stated.

Bangladesh’s aspirations extend beyond just winning matches. They aim to push for a semi-final berth in the prestigious tournament. “That will give us momentum we can use throughout the tournament as we try and push for a semi-final spot,” Sultana added.

Bangladesh finds itself in a competitive Group B, alongside England, Scotland, South Africa, and West Indies. Despite a disappointing defeat to Sri Lanka in their first warm-up match, Bangladesh bounced back with a victory over Pakistan, instilling confidence within the team.

Sultana acknowledged the challenges ahead but remained optimistic about her team’s chances. “We are trying to push for the semi-final spot. We know it will be tough, but we are confident that we can do it,” she said.

Bangladesh’s Nigar Sultana is determined to lead her team to victory in their opening match of the Women’s T20 World Cup against Scotland on October 3. A win would be a significant milestone for Bangladesh, who have not won a match in their last four World Cup appearances and have only one victory in five editions.

Sultana emphasizes that Bangladesh is not underestimating Scotland. “We want to win the first match,” she said. “It will be a huge achievement for the team. The team will get into a flow when that happens. We can then dream of something bigger. We are hungry for it.”

Scotland, however, is a formidable opponent. “They won’t let you win easily. They don’t give up without a fight. We are mentally prepared to face those challenges,” Sultana said.

Despite their past struggles, Sultana and Bangladesh have ambitious goals. They aim to challenge England, West Indies, and South Africa, the other teams in their group, and reach the semi-finals. “To play in the semi-final, we have to win against those three teams, too,” Sultana said. “We have different plans against each team. If we can execute our gameplan, then it will good for us.”

Bangladesh’s batting has been a concern in recent series, but Sultana is confident in the team’s young players, such as Shathi Rani and Taj Nehar. “Batting is definitely a concern but we saw some improvements among the batters during the ‘A’ team tour [of Sri Lanka],” she said.

Bangladesh’s strength lies in their spin attack, led by left-arm spinner Nahida Akter and 19-year-old legspinner Rabeya Khan. Sultana praised Rabeya’s contributions, saying, “She has taken our team to a different level through her contributions in both formats. She is a great fielder. She is good with the bat too but doesn’t take batting seriously. She is maturing slowly. If there’s someone I rely with the ball in tough situations after Nahida, it is definitely Rabeya.”
