Mumbai’s Batters Dominate, Set Record in Ranji Trophy

Mumbai’s batters put on a dominant display in their Ranji Trophy Elite Group A match against Odisha, posting a mammoth total of 602 for four before their bowlers tightened the noose around the visitors’ neck.

Shreyas Iyer and Siddhesh Lad were the stars of the show for Mumbai, forging a record-breaking fourth-wicket partnership of 354 runs. Iyer, known for his aggressive batting, smashed 24 fours and nine sixes in his innings of 233, while Lad played a more patient role, contributing 169 not out with 17 fours.

The duo’s partnership was the highest fourth-wicket stand for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy, surpassing the previous record of 336 set by Wasim Jaffer and Amol Muzumdar in 2006. It also marked the first time that two Mumbai batters had scored double centuries in the same innings of a Ranji Trophy match.

Mumbai’s innings was further boosted by a cameo from Suryansh Shedge, who smashed 79 not out off just 36 balls, including seven fours and six sixes. The declaration came 20 minutes after lunch, with Mumbai’s total standing at an imposing 602 for four.

Odisha’s bowlers struggled to contain Mumbai’s onslaught, with only Himanshu Singh extracting some bounce and turn from the pitch. Singh picked up two wickets, while Suryakant Samantray and Debabrata Pradhan claimed one each.

In response, Odisha’s openers Anurag Sarangi and Swastik Samal made a steady start, putting on 39 runs for the first wicket. However, Shardul Thakur broke the partnership by dismissing Samal for a duck.

Sarangi and Govinda Poddar then added 39 runs for the second wicket before Himanshu struck again, trapping Sarangi lbw for 39. The dismissal triggered a mini-collapse, as Mumbai picked up three wickets for two runs in 16 balls.

Odisha’s innings was eventually halted at 146 for five, with Sandeep Pattanaik (73 not out) providing some resistance. The onus will be on Pattanaik to stretch the innings on the third morning and wear out Mumbai’s four specialist bowlers as much as possible.

IOC and Odisha Secure Semifinal Berths in MCC-Murugappa Gold Cup Hockey

Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), the former champion of the MCC-Murugappa Gold Cup All-India hockey tournament, has secured its place in the semifinals after a 3-1 victory over Odisha in a Pool-B contest. With this win, IOC has assured itself of a spot in the knock-out stage.

IOC, studded with Olympians and Internationals, has played hard and ticked all the boxes in this year’s tournament. The team has scripted its third successive win, leaving nothing to chance. Odisha, from Pool-B, is the other team that has made it to the last four.

In Pool-A, Indian Army tamed Tamil Nadu 3-1 with a delectable mix of aggression and caution. However, the picture in Pool-A is still unclear as to who will reach the semifinals. Tamil Nadu, after its wonderful win over Maharashtra, flattered to deceive against a strong Army unit.

Army was the better side throughout the match, be it in attack, defense, or midfield. Tamil Nadu will rue its chances in the fourth quarter. Trailing 1-3 in the fourth quarter, the host had four back-to-back penalty corners but wasted each one of them.

Odisha’s Junior Football Triumph Marred by Age-Fudging Allegations

Odisha’s historic qualification for the final of the Dr. BC Roy Trophy, the boys’ junior national football championship, has been overshadowed by allegations of age fudging. The tournament, which began in 1962, saw Odisha reach the final for only the third time. However, the achievement has been tainted by claims that the team fielded 12 overage players.

The Football Association of Odisha (FAO) has denied the allegations, but the All India Football Federation (AIFF) has launched an inquiry. The issue of age fudging is not new in Indian youth sports, with several state associations struggling to form squads for upcoming tournaments due to mandatory age tests.

The FAO has raised concerns that details of age tests conducted for the national under-15 league earlier this year were not shared with states. The association argues that it had no knowledge of the results of the TW3 (Tanner Whitehouse 3) tests, which estimate a person’s age through X-rays.

The AIFF has acknowledged that Odisha did not violate any rules for the BC Trophy, which did not require TW3 tests. However, the federation plans to introduce the tests from next year.

The FAO has also questioned why the allegedly overage players were allowed to register in the AIFF’s centralized registration system. The AIFF has admitted to teething problems in implementing the TW3 tests across youth leagues and states but is committed to reducing age fraud.

Odisha FC's AFC Cup Journey Ends with Goalless Draw

Odisha FC’s AFC Cup Journey Ends with Goalless Draw

Indian Super League club Odisha FC’s hopes of reaching the Inter-Zone final of the AFC Cup were dashed after a goalless draw in the home leg against Australia’s Central Coast Mariners in Bhubaneswar on Thursday.

Having lost the first leg 4-0 to the A-League side, Odisha FC needed a remarkable comeback to progress. However, they failed to capitalize on the home advantage and conceded the tie 0-4 on aggregate.

The Mariners, who traveled to India with a comfortable cushion, started brightly. Ronald Barcellos and Angel Torres had early chances but were denied by Odisha goalkeeper Amrinder Singh.

Central Coast was awarded a penalty in the first half when Ryan Edmondson was brought down by Carlos Delgado. However, Mikael Doka’s spot-kick was saved by Amrinder.

The visitors continued to control possession but lacked the dominance they displayed in the first leg. Odisha defender Mourtada Fall cleared Max Balard’s free-kick under pressure from Edmondson, while the Englishman missed a volley in a promising position.

In the final quarter, Christian Theoharous had a shot saved by Amrinder, and Miguel Di Pizio’s late effort was deflected wide.

Odisha FC’s elimination from the AFC Cup marks a disappointing end to their continental campaign. The Indian club had reached the group stage for the first time this season but failed to make a significant impact.
