Josh Inglis Named Interim T20I Captain for Australia

Josh Inglis Named Interim T20I Captain for Australia

Australia’s T20I team will be led by wicketkeeper Josh Inglis in the upcoming series against Pakistan, as Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head are unavailable due to paternity leave and Test preparation, respectively. Inglis, 29, will become the 14th T20I captain for Australia, having been approved by the board following a recommendation from the selectors.

Inglis’s appointment as captain is a surprise to some, as he has not led at BBL level. However, he is highly regarded for his leadership credentials and tactical nous. He was appointed captain of a strong Prime Minister’s XI in a first-class match against West Indies in November 2022.

Inglis was also vice-captain of the Perth Scorchers last season and a key part of their leadership group. He was strongly considered to take over the captaincy when Ashton Turner suffered a season-ending injury, but Aaron Hardie was chosen instead due to a preference not to have a wicketkeeper-captain so far from his younger bowlers.

Australia’s selectors do not have the same concerns at international level given the experience of bowlers in the side. The team has a history of having an interim wicketkeeper captain, with Matthew Wade serving as vice-captain in recent years and standing in as skipper in 13 games, including during the 2022 World Cup.

The T20I series against Pakistan will also see a change in coaching staff, with head coach Andrew McDonald, batting coach Michael Di Venuto, and bowling coach Daniel Vettori taking a short break. Assistant coach Andre Borovec will take charge, as he did for Australia’s five-match T20I series against India last October. Former Australia batter Brad Hodge will also work with the group as an assistant coach, while Matthew Wade has been appointed interim fielding and keeping coach.

Sarah Glenn Ready to Spin England to T20 World Cup Glory

Sarah Glenn Ready to Spin England to T20 World Cup Glory

England’s Sarah Glenn, having overcome a concussion, is eager to resume her role as a key spinner in the team’s preparations for the T20 World Cup. The leg-spinner missed the latter part of the New Zealand series due to a head injury but has since regained fitness and played in the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy.

Glenn, alongside Sophie Ecclestone and Charlie Dean, forms a formidable spin trio for England. They will face a stern test against Pakistan in a three-match T20I series starting on Saturday. The series will serve as a crucial build-up to the World Cup in Bangladesh in October.

While Glenn, Ecclestone, and Dean are the established spinners, they are aware of the competition from Linsey Smith, who has returned to the England squad after a five-year absence. Smith’s impressive performance in a warm-up match against Pakistan has kept her in contention.

Glenn acknowledges the competitive nature of the team and the pressure to maintain her place. She believes that the trio of spinners must continue to perform consistently to retain their spots.

Despite the focus on the World Cup, Glenn remains cautious about the conditions in Bangladesh. She emphasizes the importance of adapting to the unfamiliar pitches and communicating effectively as a bowling unit.

The Pakistan series will provide England with valuable experience against different batters and prepare them for the challenges they will face in the World Cup. Glenn is excited to see how the pitches play and is confident that the team will continue to develop their game in the lead-up to the tournament.

England T20 World Cup Squad Unavailable for IPL Play-Offs

England T20 World Cup Squad Unavailable for IPL Play-Offs

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has announced that members of England’s T20 World Cup squad will be unavailable for the Indian Premier League (IPL) play-offs. The decision was made to prioritize the upcoming four-match T20I series against Pakistan, which begins on May 22.

The move will likely affect Jos Buttler (Rajasthan Royals), Phil Salt (Kolkata Knight Riders), and Moeen Ali (Chennai Super Kings). These players were informed of their selection in the provisional World Cup squad on Monday and were told that they would not be available for the IPL knockout stages.

The play-offs for the IPL are scheduled to run from May 21 to May 26, directly clashing with England’s Pakistan series. Other England players involved in both the World Cup squad and the IPL include Jonny Bairstow, Sam Curran, Liam Livingstone, Will Jacks, and Reece Topley.

The ECB has requested that the players return to the UK on the weekend of May 18-19, which could rule them out of their respective franchises’ final group-stage fixtures. The group stage concludes on May 19, and England is keen for their World Cup squad to have a few days together before their first T20I since December.

England’s managing director, Rob Key, explained that the decision was made to ensure that the players have sufficient preparation time for the World Cup. “We’ve got to the point where actually, we think it’s more important that you come back at that group gets together,” Key said. “You just want them to get together and spend a bit of time and build up to it.”

Key also revealed that Buttler had initiated the decision to return home before the end of the IPL. “I asked him very early on in the piece and said, ‘Look, as England captain, you’re obviously going to have this series against Pakistan. How do you see it?’ And straightaway, he said, ‘No, no, I want to come back and start getting ready for the World Cup in that series that’s just before it.'”

The ECB’s decision has drawn mixed reactions. Some have praised the move, arguing that it is necessary to prioritize the national team’s preparations for the World Cup. Others have expressed disappointment, as it means that some of the IPL’s most exciting players will be absent from the play-offs.
