Kerala’s Lower Order Dominates Uttar Pradesh in Ranji Trophy

Kerala’s gritty lower-order batting, led by captain Sachin Baby and Salman Nizar, put them in a commanding position against Uttar Pradesh in the Ranji Trophy Elite Group C match at the KCA-St. Xavier’s College ground.

After resuming on 105 for four, Kerala lost Baba Aparajith and Aditya Sarwate cheaply to Uttar Pradesh’s left-arm spinner Shivam Sharma. However, Baby and Akshay Chandran steadied the innings with a 63-run stand for the fifth wicket.

When Chandran fell, Baby found an ideal ally in Nizar, who curbed his natural flamboyance to play a patient innings. The duo navigated the challenging track, using the depth of the crease and stepping out to loft the ball over the infield.

Baby and Nizar’s 99-run partnership for the sixth wicket put Kerala in control. Baby eventually fell for 83, trapped in front by Shivam Mavi, but Jalaj Saxena continued the resistance with a fluent 35.

Nizar remained unbeaten on 74, hitting sixes and fours off leg spinner Piyush Chawla to signal Kerala’s intent for the third day. Mohammed Azharuddeen also contributed with an unbeaten 11, ensuring Kerala reached 340 for seven at stumps.

Uttar Pradesh’s bowlers toiled hard, with Shivam Sharma taking two wickets and Saurabh Kumar, Aaqib Khan, and Chawla claiming one each. However, Kerala’s lower-order resilience proved too much to overcome.

Sanju Samson to Boost Kerala's Ranji Trophy Campaign

Sanju Samson to Boost Kerala’s Ranji Trophy Campaign

Sanju Samson, the dynamic wicketkeeper-batter, has confirmed his availability for Kerala’s upcoming Ranji Trophy match against Karnataka, scheduled to commence on October 18 in Alur. This announcement comes after Samson’s impressive performances in the recently concluded three-T20I series against Bangladesh.

Samson’s inclusion in the Kerala squad is a significant boost for the team, which has already secured a convincing eight-wicket victory in its opening game against Punjab. The 28-year-old’s experience and skill will be invaluable to the Sachin Baby-led unit.

“Yes, Sanju Samson reached out to me and confirmed his availability for the next game. He will be playing the match vs Karnataka in Alur,” said P Prasanth, chairman of Kerala’s senior selection committee.

While Samson’s availability for this particular match is confirmed, his future participation in the Ranji Trophy will depend on his commitments to the Indian team. To ensure continuity within the squad, Baby will continue to lead the side.

“For now, Sanju’s availability for this game is confirmed. His future availability depends on his India commitments. So that’s why Baby will continue to lead the side,” added Prasanth.

Samson’s recent performances in the Duleep Trophy have been impressive, with the batter scoring a century and a couple of substantial 40s for India D. However, it remains uncertain whether he will don the wicketkeeping gloves for Kerala in the upcoming fixture.

“That the coach and all will take the call along with Sanju. Whether he keeps or not is totally up to them,” said Prasanth.

Kerala finds itself in Group C of the ongoing Ranji Trophy alongside Bengal, Bihar, Haryana, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, and Uttar Pradesh. A convincing win in the opening fixture has undoubtedly boosted the team’s confidence.

Prior to the season, Kerala acquired the services of Baba Aparajith, a former India U-19 player and a consistent performer for Tamil Nadu. Aparajith’s contributions with both bat and ball have been crucial for the team.

Sachin Baby’s masterful century propelled Aries Kollam Sailors to a resounding six-wicket victory over Calicut Globstars in the inaugural edition of the KCL at the Greenfield stadium.

Baby’s unbeaten 105 off 54 deliveries, studded with eight fours and seven sixes, was the cornerstone of the Sailors’ successful chase of 214. His 114-run third-wicket partnership with Vatsal Govind (45) proved decisive in turning the tide in favor of the Sailors.

The Globstars had earlier posted a competitive 213/6, thanks to a blistering start by captain Rohan Kunnummal and a late surge by M. Ajinas. Kunnummal’s 51 off 30 balls, including two sixes, set the tone for the innings, while Ajinas’ 56 off 33 balls, featuring three sixes and a four, provided a late boost.

However, the Sailors’ bowlers, led by leg-spinner Midhun (2/42), kept the Globstars in check, restricting them to just 23 runs in the final three overs.

In the chase, the Sailors lost openers Abhishek Nair and Arun Polouse early, but Baby’s unwavering presence at the crease steadied the innings. He manipulated the field placements with ease, punishing loose deliveries with boundaries and sixes.

Govind provided valuable support, attacking the Globstars spinners and contributing 45 runs. The pair’s partnership laid the foundation for the Sailors’ victory.

Despite the loss of Govind, Baby continued to dominate the bowling, finding boundaries at will. He reached his century with a boundary off Akhil Dev in the 19th over, sparking jubilation among the Sailors’ camp.

The Sailors eventually reached their target with 19.1 overs to spare, securing the inaugural KCL title. Baby’s match-winning performance earned him the Player of the Match award.

Sachin Baby’s remarkable century (105 n.o., 50b, 5×4, 8×6) propelled Kollam Sailors to a resounding seven-wicket victory over Kochi Blue Tigers in the Kerala Cricket League at the Greenfield Stadium.

Baby’s masterful innings, the first-ever century in the league’s history, single-handedly guided his team to victory. After reaching his half-century, Baby accelerated his scoring rate, reaching his hundred in just 16 more deliveries.

The Blue Tigers’ Manu Krishnan had a night to forget. He dropped Baby on 73 off Basil Thampi’s bowling and overstepped at the bowling crease after having Rahul Sharma caught in the deep. Baby, who faced the next ball as the batters had crossed, clobbered the Free Hit for a six and then smashed three successive maximums off the left-arm medium pacer to race to his century.

The Sailors’ victory cemented their position at the top of the table with 12 points. Earlier, Sijomon Joseph’s 50 helped the Blue Tigers post a competitive total of 158 for eight, but it proved insufficient in the face of Baby’s heroics.

In another match, Trivandrum Royals extended its winning streak with an eight-wicket victory over Thrissur Titans. The Royals’ fourth win moved them up to third in the points table, while the Titans remained in fifth place after their fifth loss.

Royals’ most expensive buy, M.S. Akhil, stole the limelight from his skipper Abdul Basith. Akhil anchored the chase with an unbeaten 54 and finished the match in style by clubbing Monu Krisha for successive sixes. Akhil’s 86-run unbeaten third-wicket stand with Govind Dev Pai saw the Royals win with 13 balls to spare.
