Sussex on Verge of Division Two Title After Robson Century

Sussex on Verge of Division Two Title After Robson Century

Sussex’s pursuit of the Division Two title took a significant step forward as they trailed Middlesex by 159 runs at the end of day three at Hove. Despite losing the first seven sessions to inclement weather, the match finally got underway at 12.40pm on day three.

Sam Robson’s superb century (113 off 103 balls) spearheaded Middlesex’s innings, which saw them post 271 all out from just 44.3 overs. The former England Test opener’s chanceless knock included 15 fours and helped Middlesex make up for lost time.

Ryan Higgins’ quickfire 40 (28 balls) provided support, but it was the spin duo of Jack Carson (3-46) and James Coles (4-61) who proved to be Sussex’s most potent weapons. Carson’s three wickets took him to 50 championship wickets for the season, the first time a Sussex spinner has reached that landmark since Monty Panesar in 2012.

In reply, Sussex openers Tom Haines (53*) and Oli Carter (15) provided a solid start, putting on 68 for the first wicket. However, Carter’s dismissal, caught and bowled by Tom Helm, and Tom Clark’s subsequent departure for 14 left Sussex on 80-2.

Tom Alsop (11*) joined Haines at the crease and the pair saw out the remaining overs, leaving Sussex with the prospect of clinching the Division Two title on the final day of the season.

Higgins Reaches 1,000 Runs as Middlesex Draw with Yorkshire

Higgins Reaches 1,000 Runs as Middlesex Draw with Yorkshire

Middlesex’s Ryan Higgins became the second batter this season to reach 1,000 runs in the Vitality County Championship, leading his team to a near-certain draw against Yorkshire at Headingley. Higgins’ unbeaten 117 off 210 balls anchored Middlesex’s 441 for five, trailing Yorkshire’s first-innings 601 for six declared by 160 runs.

Higgins, who joined Glamorgan’s Colin Ingram in reaching the milestone, posted his fifth century of the Division Two campaign. He was joined by opener Sam Robson, who scored 108 off 219 balls, in posting a century.

Yorkshire’s Dom Bess claimed four for 168 in 64 overs of off-spin, but Higgins’ aggressive approach and Robson’s watchful innings kept Middlesex in the game. Robson, who scored his only Test century for England at Headingley 10 years ago, shared a 121-run partnership with Max Holden (51) before being dismissed lbw by Bess.

Higgins and Leus du Plooy added 57 for the fourth wicket, while Higgins and wicketkeeper-batter Jack Davies shared 128 for the fifth wicket. Davies contributed 61 before edging to slip off Bess, but Higgins remained unbeaten, reaching 1,000 Championship runs for the season and bringing up his century with a six over long-on.

Middlesex’s focus on avoiding defeat prevented them from accumulating significant batting bonus points, with Bess and Dan Moriarty bowling 116 overs between them. However, the draw would leave second-placed Middlesex one point clear of Yorkshire in third with three matches remaining in the promotion race.

Roland-Jones' 11-Wicket Haul Powers Middlesex to Eight-Wicket Victory

Roland-Jones’ 11-Wicket Haul Powers Middlesex to Eight-Wicket Victory

Middlesex secured a resounding eight-wicket victory over Northamptonshire at Merchant Taylors’ School, propelled by Toby Roland-Jones’ match-winning 11-wicket haul.

Resuming their first innings on day four, Middlesex lost their last three wickets for 14 runs, with Leus Du Plooy’s 71 and Ben Sanderson’s 6 for 64 being the standout performances.

With a slender 57-run lead, Middlesex needed quick wickets, and Roland-Jones delivered, removing Ricardo Vasconcelos and Emilio Gay cheaply. Luke Proctor played a defiant knock of 33, but Roland-Jones’ relentless bowling proved too much for Northamptonshire, who were dismissed for 167.

Set a target of 111, Middlesex lost Mark Stoneman and Max Holden to Sanderson, but Sam Robson’s blistering 64* off 33 balls, featuring 10 fours, guided them to victory.

Roland-Jones’ match figures of 11 for 107 were instrumental in Middlesex’s triumph, while Robson’s second half-century of the match ensured a comfortable chase.

Middlesex Gain Upper Hand in County Championship Clash

Middlesex seized control of their Vitality County Championship clash against Northamptonshire on day two at Merchant Taylors’ School, thanks to half-centuries from Sam Robson and Leus du Plooy.

Robson, who boasts an impressive record at Northwood, ground out a crucial 58, while Du Plooy remained unbeaten on 66 as Middlesex reached 250 for seven, establishing a first-innings lead of 43.

However, Northamptonshire’s Ben Sanderson kept his side in contention with a five-wicket haul, reclaiming his position as Division Two’s leading wicket-taker.

Earlier, Northamptonshire were dismissed for 207, with Toby Roland-Jones claiming a season-best five for 49. The visitors’ hopes of restricting Middlesex were hampered by Prithvi Shaw’s three dropped catches in the slips.

Sanderson and Lewis McManus extended their partnership to 83, guiding Northamptonshire past the 200-run mark. But Henry Brookes dismissed Sanderson, and Roland-Jones wrapped up the innings swiftly.

In reply, Middlesex’s openers survived early scares before lunch. Sanderson broke the partnership, removing Mark Stoneman for 36. Robson and Max Holden then dug in, with Robson reaching his half-century with a cover drive off Yuzvendra Chahal.

However, Chahal trapped Holden leg before, and Sanderson struck twice in quick succession after tea, dismissing Robson and Stephen Eskinazi. Du Plooy and John Simpson steadied the ship with a 72-run stand, but Leech broke the partnership.

Du Plooy remained resolute, guiding Middlesex into the lead. Sanderson returned with the new ball and claimed two more wickets, but Roland-Jones’ late flurry of boundaries earned Middlesex a batting bonus point.

Robson and Du Plooy Power Middlesex to Commanding Lead Against Leicestershire

Robson and Du Plooy Power Middlesex to Commanding Lead Against Leicestershire

Middlesex’s Sam Robson and Leus du Plooy dominated the first day of their Vitality County Championship clash against Leicestershire at Lord’s, sharing a record-breaking third-wicket partnership to put the home side in a commanding position.

Robson, returning from a thumb injury, top-scored with a meticulous 162, while Du Plooy struck 131 from 191 balls, his second century since joining Middlesex from Derbyshire. Their 252-run stand is the highest third-wicket partnership for Middlesex against Leicestershire.

The Seaxes posted a formidable 407 for eight, giving them a first-innings lead of 101. Leicestershire’s bowlers struggled to make inroads, with Ben Mike, Scott Currie, Ben Green, and Rehan Ahmed each picking up two wickets.

However, with the first day washed out entirely and a gloomy weather forecast for Monday, a draw looks the most probable outcome.

The visitors had doubled their overnight tally to two wickets in the first over of the day, but Robson and Du Plooy steadied the ship, accumulating runs steadily. Robson survived a scare on 39 when he was dropped by wicketkeeper Ben Cox, and went on to reach his half-century with a leg-glance off Tom Scriven.

Du Plooy also reached his half-century, giving Green the charge and hoisting a short delivery into the Mound Stand for six. After lunch, Robson reached his century from 198 balls, while Du Plooy completed his ton despite being dropped on 84.

The second new ball proved fruitful for the batters, who soon accelerated beyond Leicestershire’s total of 306. Robson pulled Mike for two fours and a six before tea, but the Foxes bowlers finally began to make inroads during the final session.

Du Plooy was first to depart, feathering one behind from Currie, and Ryan Higgins was bowled swinging at Green. Robson was also dismissed by Green, caught at backward point. Nathan Fernandes maintained Middlesex’s momentum with a pugnacious 25-ball knock of 31, including sixes off Green and Rehan, but holed out to deep midwicket. Toby Roland-Jones also perished in pursuit of quick runs prior to bad light intervening.
