Punjab Kings Retain Prabhsimran Singh and Shashank Singh for IPL 2023

Ahead of the highly anticipated Indian Premier League (IPL) auctions, Punjab Kings have announced the retention of batters Prabhsimran Singh and Shashank Singh for the upcoming season.

Prabhsimran, a wicketkeeper-batsman, has been with Punjab since 2019 and has amassed 756 runs in 34 games, averaging 22.24 with a strike rate of 146.23. Last season, he played some impressive innings, showcasing his potential.

Shashank Singh emerged as a key player for Punjab last season, scoring 354 runs in 14 games at an average of 44.25 and a strike rate of 164.65. His ability to bat at multiple positions in the order and his exceptional fielding skills make him a valuable asset to the team.

Punjab Kings CEO Satish Menon expressed the franchise’s goal of winning the IPL trophy this season. He praised newly appointed head coach Ricky Ponting, describing him as one of the sharpest minds in cricket.

“This auction will be critical as we go there with maximum purse. We will build on what we have at the moment. It will be an interesting auction, especially for us, as we also have a new coach in Ricky Ponting. He is one of the sharpest minds in cricket. You will see us develop an extraordinary team. Our goal is to go for silverware this year – nothing short of that,” Menon said.

Menon emphasized the franchise’s faith in Prabhsimran Singh, stating that they have witnessed his development over the past six years. He believes Prabhsimran is on the cusp of breaking into the big leagues.

Regarding Shashank Singh, Menon highlighted his versatility and passion, which were key factors in his retention. He also praised Shashank’s gun fielding abilities.

Earlier this year, Punjab Kings appointed Ricky Ponting as their head coach. Menon hinted that Ponting’s fresh ideas and experience will be instrumental in the upcoming auctions.

Punjab Kings Retain Only Two Uncapped Players Ahead of IPL 2025 Mega Auction

Punjab Kings Retain Only Two Uncapped Players Ahead of IPL 2025 Mega Auction

Punjab Kings (PBKS) are set to retain only two uncapped players, Shashank Singh and Prabhsimran Singh, ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. With the largest purse of over INR 100 crore and four right-to-match options, PBKS will enter the auction with significant financial flexibility.

Despite their interest in retaining Arshdeep Singh, their second-highest wicket-taker in IPL 2024, PBKS has opted to release several high-profile players, including Harshal Patel, Sam Curran, Jitesh Sharma, Kagiso Rabada, Jonny Bairstow, and Liam Livingstone.

The retention of Shashank and Prabhsimran, who were PBKS’s top two scorers in IPL 2024, will cost the franchise INR 8 crore from their purse. Both batters played crucial roles in PBKS’s record chase of 262 against Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens.

PBKS has been struggling to qualify for the IPL playoffs since 2014 and has made significant changes to its coaching setup, appointing Ricky Ponting as head coach. The franchise hopes that these changes will improve their performance in 2025.

The deadline for franchises to submit their lists of retained players is October 31. Teams can retain up to six players, with a maximum of five capped internationals and two uncapped players. While the IPL has set minimum deductions from the auction purse for each retained player, franchises are free to pay more or less than those amounts.

Shashank Singh's Smart Batting Powers Punjab Kings to Record Chase

Shashank Singh’s Smart Batting Powers Punjab Kings to Record Chase

Shashank Singh’s blistering unbeaten 68 off 28 balls played a pivotal role in Punjab Kings’ record-breaking eight-wicket win over Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL. The 32-year-old’s ability to pick the bowlers and take the game deep proved crucial in the chase of KKR’s daunting 261 for six.

When Shashank entered the field, PBKS needed 84 runs in 7.3 overs. Jonny Bairstow, the eventual centurion, was batting at the other end on 93 off 39 balls. However, Shashank did not bat an eyelid while knocking off 68 runs (2×4, 8×6) in that period as Bairstow added just 15 off nine balls during their third wicket alliance.

Shashank’s innings was not just about power-hitting but also about cricketing smarts. He left alone KKR spinner Sunil Narine while focussing on other bowlers to collect his runs. “I know that Sunil Narine is a world-class bowler, so I knew there was no point in over-attacking him. He’s someone to hit singles, doubles, or nudge the ball towards the boundary,” said Shashank.

In fact, Shashank faced seven balls out of 28 from Narine and scored just three runs, while putting other bowlers through the wringer, making the remaining 65 off 21 balls.

Shashank’s experience and talks with his father and coaches at PBKS helped him in his journey. “If we talk about smartness, it’s coming with experience. Secondly, I spend a lot of time discussing cricket with my father. Last time when I got out too quickly, my dad told me that I should’ve played further back because it was a slow wicket,” said Shashank.

“I have these conversations with my father at home and the world-class coaches who are here. I enjoy asking questions and understanding what they do. I think if I take clues from them, it’ll improve my cricket,” he added.

Aakash Chopra Slams Punjab Kings' Treatment of Shashank Singh

Aakash Chopra Slams Punjab Kings’ Treatment of Shashank Singh

Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra has expressed his disappointment with Punjab Kings’ (PBKS) approach in their recent loss to Mumbai Indians (MI) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. Chopra criticized the team’s decision to not utilize in-form batter Shashank Singh effectively.

Chasing a target of 193, PBKS lost four early wickets, leaving them in a precarious position. Despite an explosive knock from Ashutosh Sharma, who brought them close to victory, they ultimately fell short by nine runs. Chopra believes that PBKS’s decision to treat Singh as a finisher, rather than playing him in the top order, was a major factor in their defeat.

“When your team is 14/4, it seems like the match can’t be won because you are too far behind, and your four main players’, whom you consider your main players, innings’ have ended. Shashank comes in such a situation and Jitesh (Sharma) was there with him,” Chopra said on his YouTube channel.

“I would want to say one thing about Shashank. The way he is batting, how did you decide that he is your finisher only, that even though he is batting well, you won’t send him up the order? What is the point? Someone who is batting well and has the temperament is not a finisher only. He plays red-ball cricket and is an experienced player,” he added.

Stand-in skipper San Curran praised Shashank and Ashutosh for their performances but acknowledged the disappointment of losing such close matches. “Another close one, I think this team likes a close one, but unfortunately another loss. Another incredible knock from the young guy (on Ashutosh), but another close loss. It’s very tough, you want to lose close games rather than getting absolutely thumped, but we’ve lost a lot of wickets at the start, the way the younger guys have taken the team so close is heartening (on Shashank Singh and Ashutosh Sharma),” Curran said.

“They have incredible confidence, you see a guy like Ashutosh having the confidence to play the sweeps and the big hits against pacers, it’s so great to watch them in action. It’s disheartening to lose close games, but there are a lot of positives in this team. We still have the belief in us, we believe we can turn this around, the sun will come up tomorrow and we will hopefully get on a winning run,” Curran added.
