Para-javelin thrower Navdeep Singh meets PM Modi, presents cap

Indian para-javelin thrower Navdeep Singh, who won the gold medal in the javelin throw F41 category at the Paris Paralympic Games, had the opportunity to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday. Navdeep, who hails from Haryana, presented a cap to the Prime Minister and also requested him to sign his kit. PM Modi obliged and signed an autograph on Navdeep’s left arm, which is his throwing arm.

During the interaction, PM Modi also asked Navdeep about the video that went viral following his triumph. “Have you seen your video or not. How do you perform with such aggression,” PM Modi asked. To which, Navdeep replied, “Last time (Tokyo Paralympics), I had finished fourth. Before leaving for Paris, I had promised you, so the promise has been fulfilled.”

Navdeep’s gold medal was upgraded from silver after the initial winner, Islamic Republic of Iran’s Sadegh Beit Sayah, got disqualified from the final. Navdeep had initially finished second with a season-best throw of 47.32m, while Sadegh, before the disqualification, stood at the top with a Paralympic record of 47.64m.

In the jam-packed Stade de France, it was a redemption arc for Navdeep after he finished fourth in Tokyo. Navdeep was second in order among the six participants and started his campaign in the final with a foul attempt. He failed to stop the momentum and fell over the line, which resulted in a foul attempt.

In his third attempt, Navdeep dug deep and delivered his season best with a massive 47.32m throw and moved to the top spot. He maintained his lead till the end and eventually won the gold medal.

Navdeep’s victory is a testament to his hard work and dedication. He has overcome many challenges in his life, including a childhood accident that left him with a disability. But he has never given up on his dreams, and his success is an inspiration to us all.

Sheetal Devi, a remarkable para-archer from India, has etched her name in history by securing a bronze medal in the mixed team compound archery event at the ongoing Paralympics 2024. Partnering with Rakesh Sharma, the duo triumphed over Italy’s Matteo Bonacina and Eleonora Sarti in a thrilling 156-155 encounter.

Despite her bronze medal triumph, Sheetal’s journey has been marked by both triumph and adversity. She commenced her campaign with an impressive performance in the women’s compound qualification round, setting a new world record with a score of 703. However, her record was later surpassed by Turkey’s Oznur Girdi. Sheetal finished second in the qualification round but faced a setback in the 1/8 Elimination 8 round, losing to Chile’s Mariana Zuniga by a narrow margin of 137-138.

Sheetal’s unwavering determination and resilience have been instrumental in her success. Born with phocomelia, a condition that resulted in her being born without arms, she has overcome significant challenges. Her journey began in Jammu and Kashmir, where she was born on January 10, 2007. In 2019, she was discovered by the Indian Army’s Rashtriya Rifles unit, who provided her with invaluable support in her education and medical care.

Prosthetics were not an option for Sheetal, but she discovered her exceptional ability to climb trees using her legs. Within a remarkable 11 months of training, she made her debut in the women’s compound event at the 2022 Asian Para Games, where she claimed two gold medals in mixed doubles and women’s individual, along with a silver in women’s double compound.

Sheetal’s achievements have not only brought glory to India but have also inspired countless individuals with disabilities. She is a testament to the indomitable spirit that resides within us all, proving that anything is possible with determination and support.

Sheetal’s journey in archery is nothing short of remarkable. Competing in the Paralympics, she shot her first arrow with incredible accuracy, securing a bullseye that echoed throughout the arena. The crowd erupted into thunderous applause, celebrating not only her skill but also her courage as an athlete. It’s moments like these that remind me why I admire para-athletes; they possess an unyielding spirit that inspires us all.

What struck me most about Sheetal’s performance is her resilience. Overcoming challenges that many of us cannot even begin to imagine, she exemplifies the true essence of sportsmanship. Her ability to harness her skills, coupled with the emotional support from the crowd, created an electrifying atmosphere at the Paralympic venue. Though Sheetal’s journey at the paralympic has come to an end. But during her time there hse has shown immense skill and determination. Shel had secured a second-place finish in the ranking round, narrowly missing a world para archery record by just one point.

Mariana Zuniga of Chile was her opponent in the Women’s Individual Compound Open 1/8 Elimination match, and it was an intense match. Although both archers showed incredible talent and tenacity, Zuniga ultimately prevailed by the slimmest of margins, winning 138–137.

As Sheetal continues her journey in the Paralympics, I am excited to see what else she will accomplish. Her bullseye start is merely a glimpse of what’s to come, and I have no doubt that she will continue to put forth remarkable performances. It is not just a personal victory for her; it’s a triumph for all who aspire to break barriers and redefine possibilities.

Seated on a chair, she performs this complex maneuver with a grace that makes her archery seem like poetry in motion. During the 2024 Paris Paralympics, Sheetal received thunderous applause from the stadium crowd as she took over the challenge and hit the bullseye in her first attempt.

Sheetal had secured a second-place finish in the ranking round, narrowly missing a world para archery record by just one point. However, despite the strong start, Sheetal’s quest for a Paralympic medal was met with heartbreak on Saturday.

In the Women’s Individual Compound Open 1/8 Elimination match, she faced off against Chile’s Mariana Zuniga in what turned out to be a nail-biting contest. Both archers displayed tremendous skill and determination, but in the end, Zuniga edged out a victory by the narrowest of margins, winning 138-137.

Sheetal started the match with a bang, hitting two consecutive 10s and following up with a 9 to take an early lead. Zuniga, though strong, managed only 28 points in the first end, giving Sheetal a slight edge. However, the momentum began to shift in the second end when a 7 from Sheetal allowed Zuniga to catch up.

From there, the match was a tight contest, with both archers matching each other almost point for point. The third end saw the scores tied at 82-82, setting the stage for a dramatic finish.

In the fourth end, Zuniga applied pressure with two 10s and a 9, but Sheetal responded in kind, keeping the scores level as they headed into the final three arrows. The tension was palpable as both archers knew that any mistake could cost them the match. Unfortunately for Sheetal, an 8 on her final arrow allowed Zuniga to pull ahead with a 9, securing her victory.

Though Sheetal Devi fell short of advancing to the quarterfinals, her performance in Paris has only solidified her status as a rising star in para archery. Her determination, resilience, and unwavering spirit have inspired countless individuals around the world.

India’s archery campaign at the Paris Paralympics 2024 suffered a setback on Saturday as Sarita Kumari’s impressive run ended in the quarterfinals, while Sheetal Devi, known for her remarkable feat of drawing arrows with her toes, bowed out in the last-16 of the compound women’s open category.

Sarita, the ninth seed from Faridabad, had displayed dominance in the first and second rounds. However, her dream run was halted by top-seed Oznur Cure Girdi of Korea in the last eight. Girdi, who had shattered the world record in the qualifying round with a score of 704 out of a maximum 720 points, showcased her prowess by shooting three perfect 10s in the second end, securing a five-point lead.

Despite Sarita’s efforts to match Girdi’s 30 in the third end and a perfect fourth end, the Turkish archer maintained her lead, ultimately wrapping up the match with a 29 in the fifth end.

Sheetal, who had also surpassed the previous world record of 698 by shooting 703, endured a setback in the second end, where she shot a 7-point red ring. This allowed Tokyo silver medalist Mariana Zuniga of Chile to gain an advantage, eventually defeating Sheetal 137-138 in the pre-quarters.

Despite Sheetal’s early elimination, Sarita had earlier showcased her dominance by defeating Italy’s Eleonora Sarti 141-135 in a one-sided pre-quarterfinal match. Sarita, who had won a team silver medal at the Asian Para Games last year, dropped just one point in the first end, securing a four-point lead. She maintained her control throughout the match, sealing the victory with two solid ends.

In the open class, archers shoot from a sitting position at a distance of 50m at an 80cm five-ring target made up of the 10-6 point bands.

India’s Paralympic contingent, the largest in the nation’s history, is aiming for an unprecedented medal haul at the ongoing Paralympics 2024 in Paris. Among the standout performers is 17-year-old Sheetal Devi, who has made history as the youngest competitor in women’s para archery.

Devi’s remarkable journey began with her birth with phocomelia, a condition that resulted in her being born without arms. Undeterred, she has become one of only four armless archers competing at the Paralympics.

In the individual compound rankings rounds, Devi showcased her exceptional skills, securing second place with a personal best mark of 703. She also partnered with Rakesh Kumar to set a new mixed compound world record of 1399.

Devi’s success is a testament to her unwavering determination and the support she has received from the Indian Army’s Rashtriya Rifles unit. Despite being told that prosthetics were not an option, she astounded her coaches with her ability to climb trees using her legs.

Inspired by Matt Stutzman, another armless archer, Devi’s coaches developed a unique training style for her. Within just 11 months of training, she made her mark at the 2022 Asian Para Games, winning two gold medals in mixed doubles and women’s individual.

Devi’s achievements have earned her widespread recognition. In 2023, she was named Best Youth Athlete of the Year by the Asian Paralympic Committee and received the prestigious Arjuna Award from the Government of India.

As the mixed team compound archery quarter-final approaches on September 2, Devi and her team are poised to make history once again. Their determination and unwavering spirit serve as an inspiration to all, proving that anything is possible with hard work and belief.
