Former New Zealand batsman Martin Guptill, known for his exceptional six-hitting ability, continues to showcase his skills even after retiring from international cricket. In a recent Legends League Cricket match, the 38-year-old demonstrated his impeccable timing by hitting a shot that soared straight into the commentary box, shattering the window in the process.

During the 11th match of the Legends League Cricket 2024, Harbhajan Singh’s Manipal Tigers won the toss and opted to field first against the Southern Super Stars at Surat’s Lalbhai Contractor Stadium. The Super Stars amassed an impressive total of 194 for 7 in their allotted 20 overs.

Guptill’s explosive innings of 68 runs off just 29 deliveries was the highlight of the Super Stars’ batting performance. His knock included 8 boundaries and 4 towering sixes. One of Guptill’s sixes, hit off Dan Christian’s bowling in the 9th over, was particularly noteworthy. The ball sailed into the commentary box, shattering the glass window of the facility.

The sheer power and timing of the shot left everyone in awe, including Manipal Tigers’ skipper Harbhajan Singh, who couldn’t take his eyes off the ball as it disappeared into the distance.

In response to the formidable target set by the Southern Super Stars, Manipal Tigers were bundled out for 152, falling short by 42 runs. The Super Stars emerged victorious, thanks in large part to Guptill’s blistering knock.

Guptill’s six-hitting prowess has been a hallmark of his career. He holds the record for the most sixes in One Day Internationals (ODIs), with 172 to his name. He is also the only player to have scored two double centuries in ODIs.

Despite retiring from international cricket in 2023, Guptill continues to play in various T20 leagues around the world. His recent performance in the Legends League Cricket is a testament to his enduring skills and his ability to entertain fans with his explosive batting.

Meanwhile, on the field, India’s Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant slammed four sixes each as they notched up impressive centuries in the first innings. Their six-hitting prowess prompted the discussion between Tamim and Shastri.

Bangladesh ended Day 3 on 158/4, still trailing India’s massive target of 515 by 357 runs. Mushfiqur Rahim was dismissed before the end of play.

Earlier, Gill and Pant’s centuries helped India declare at 287/4 in their second innings. Bangladesh’s poor first innings performance left them with a daunting task to chase down.

Bangladesh’s openers, Zakir Hasan and Shadman Islam, provided a solid start with a 50-run partnership, but both fell shortly after. R Ashwin was the pick of the Indian bowlers, claiming three wickets, including those of Mominul Haque and Mushfiqur Rahim.

Bangladesh enter this series on the back of a historic 2-0 away series win over Pakistan. India, on the other hand, are playing their first red-ball match since their 4-1 victory over England in March.
