In a thrilling encounter at the Sixty Strikes tournament organized by the National Cricket League, USA, 2011 Cricket World Cup winner Suresh Raina showcased his enduring brilliance, guiding New York Lions CC to a 19-run victory over Los Angeles Waves CC.

Raina, batting at number three, unleashed a whirlwind knock of 53 runs off just 28 deliveries, peppering the boundary with six fours and two sixes. His innings formed the cornerstone of New York’s imposing total of 126 for 2 in their allotted 10 overs.

Former Sri Lankan opener Upul Tharanga provided able support to Raina, contributing a brisk 40 off 23 balls. The duo forged a formidable partnership, ensuring a steady flow of runs for New York.

In response, Los Angeles Waves faced an early setback when opener Stevie Eskinazi was dismissed for a golden duck off the very first ball. However, Adam Rossington (31 off 15), Tim David (19 off 10), and Joe Burns (17 off 9) played valiant knocks to keep Los Angeles in the hunt.

Despite their efforts, the target proved too daunting for Los Angeles, who fell short by 19 runs. Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan, who recently featured in a 2-0 Test series loss to India, failed to make an impact, scoring only 13 runs and conceding 18 runs in his lone over with the ball.

The National Cricket League (NCL) of the United States has received the prestigious approval of the International Cricket Council (ICC) for its upcoming ‘Sixty Strikes’ tournament. This significant development marks a major milestone in the growth of cricket in the United States.

In addition to the ICC approval, the NCL has announced two other key developments: the appointment of South African businessman Haroon Lorgat as commissioner and the partnership with Dubai-based SEE Holdings to ensure the tournament’s sustainability.

Lorgat, a renowned cricket administrator, played a pivotal role in developing the Decision Review System (DRS) in cricket. His appointment as commissioner is expected to bring valuable expertise and leadership to the NCL.

“I’m privileged to take on this role with the National Cricket League at such a transformative moment,” said Lorgat. “Cricket is a sport with the power to inspire new players and connect fans across the U.S. We’re bringing something fresh, and with our focus on sustainability and global access, we are laying the groundwork to reshape American sports for future generations.”

The ‘Sixty Strikes’ tournament, scheduled to run from October 4 to 14, is expected to attract around 4,000 attendees per match. The tournament will feature mentorship from cricket legends such as Wasim Akram, Sir Vivian Richards, and Sanath Jayasuriya.

The NCL has also partnered with SEE Holdings to promote sustainability at the tournament. The partnership aims to integrate renewable energy at match venues and encourage sustainable behavior among fans.

The ‘Sixty Strikes’ tournament is poised to further accelerate the growth of cricket in the United States, following the nation’s impressive performance at the T20 World Cup 2024. The tournament’s ICC approval, Lorgat’s appointment, and the focus on sustainability demonstrate the NCL’s commitment to developing cricket in the United States and making it a global force.
