Suryakumar Yadav: From Captain to Leader

Suryakumar Yadav: From Captain to Leader

India’s T20I captain, Suryakumar Yadav, has expressed his desire to be recognized as a leader rather than merely a captain. His astute captaincy skills were evident in the first T20I against Sri Lanka, where he guided India to a successful defense of their total.

Faced with a daunting chase of 214, Sri Lanka’s openers, Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis, threatened to spoil India’s plans. However, Suryakumar’s tactical brilliance came to the fore. He brought back Arshdeep Singh, who dismissed Mendis, and then introduced Axar Patel, whose spin wizardry removed Perera and Nissanka, effectively turning the tide in India’s favor.

Suryakumar’s leadership qualities were lauded by former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan. However, Suryakumar aspires to be more than just a captain. “I don’t want to be a captain; I want to be a leader,” he stated.

One of the highlights of the match was Suryakumar’s decision to hand the ball to Riyan Parag. Despite failing with the bat, Parag proved his worth with the ball, claiming three wickets for just five runs in 1.2 overs. Suryakumar explained his rationale for giving Parag the opportunity, citing his impressive bowling skills in the IPL and nets.

India ultimately defended their total, restricting Sri Lanka to 170. With a 1-0 lead in the series, India secured an unassailable advantage in the second T20I.

Rahul Dravid's Heartfelt Message to Gautam Gambhir as Team India's New Coach

Rahul Dravid’s Heartfelt Message to Gautam Gambhir as Team India’s New Coach

As Gautam Gambhir embarks on his new role as head coach of Team India, he received a heartfelt message from his predecessor, Rahul Dravid. In a video shared by the BCCI, Dravid extended his well wishes and shared valuable insights with Gambhir.

Dravid began by welcoming Gambhir to the “most exciting job in the world,” recalling his own triumphant tenure that culminated in India’s T20 World Cup victory in 2024. He expressed his hope that Gambhir would have the same fortune of having a fully fit squad at his disposal.

Dravid also acknowledged Gambhir’s dedication and passion for Indian cricket, having observed his work as a coach and mentor in the Indian Premier League. He urged Gambhir to maintain his drive to extract the best from his team and to assist younger players.

Recognizing the intense scrutiny that comes with the role, Dravid offered words of support and encouragement. He emphasized that Gambhir would have the backing of the players, staff, and fans, even in challenging times.

Dravid concluded his message with a personal request: “In the most heated of times, exhale, take a step back, and even if it’s difficult for you, crack a smile. Whatever else happens, that will shock people.”

Gambhir was visibly moved by Dravid’s message, expressing his gratitude and admiration for his predecessor. He acknowledged the weight of the responsibility he had inherited and pledged to lead the Indian team with honesty, transparency, and a determination to make the nation proud.

Gautam Gambhir Takes Charge as India’s T20I Head Coach

Gautam Gambhir, the newly appointed head coach of the Indian cricket team, commenced his tenure with the team’s first practice session in Pallekele, Sri Lanka, ahead of the upcoming T20I series against the hosts. The Indian contingent arrived in Colombo on Monday and subsequently traveled to Pallekele for the three-match T20I series, which will be followed by as many ODIs in Colombo.

Following Rohit Sharma’s retirement from the T20I format, Suryakumar Yadav has been entrusted with the captaincy for the series. Rohit will rejoin the team for the ODIs, along with Virat Kohli, who also announced his retirement from the shortest format of the game.

During the practice session, Gambhir was observed closely monitoring the players and providing valuable batting advice to wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson. The BCCI shared a video of the session on their official Twitter account, highlighting Gambhir’s active involvement in the team’s preparations.

Prior to the team’s departure for Sri Lanka, Gambhir addressed his first press conference alongside chief selector Ajit Agarkar. Agarkar explained the rationale behind appointing Suryakumar as the T20I captain over all-rounder Hardik Pandya.

“Suryakumar is one of the deserving candidates. He is one of the best T20 batters in the world. We wanted a captain who was likely to play all the games. We will see how he will do,” Agarkar stated.

Regarding Hardik Pandya, Agarkar emphasized his continued importance to the team. “As far as Hardik is concerned, he is still a very important player. And that’s what we want him to be. Fitness has been a challenge for him over the last few years…Then it becomes difficult for the coach or selectors. I think Surya has the necessary qualities to succeed as a captain,” he added.

The first T20I between India and Sri Lanka will be played in Pallekele on Saturday.
