Northern Diamonds Triumph with Kalis Century and Turner’s Six-Wicket Haul

Northern Diamonds’ Sterre Kalis and Phoebe Turner starred in a dominant performance against Lancashire Thunder, securing an 86-run victory and propelling their team to the top of the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy standings.

Kalis notched her maiden List A century, scoring a remarkable 100 runs off 94 deliveries. Her innings, coupled with a 58-run knock from Beth Langston, propelled the Diamonds to a formidable total of 290 for 6.

Lancashire Thunder’s chase got off to a promising start, with Alice Clarke and Emma Lamb putting on 38 runs in the opening five overs. However, Rachel Slater’s double strike, dismissing both batters, halted their momentum.

Eve Jones and Seren Smale steadied the Thunder’s innings, but their 100-run partnership was broken by Turner, who bowled Smale for 48. Langston then struck twice in a double-wicket maiden, removing Jones and Ellie Threlkeld.

Turner continued her impressive spell, claiming the remaining Thunder wickets to finish with a remarkable six for 20. Her performance sealed a five-point victory for the Diamonds, who now sit atop the table with 37 points.

Earlier, Lauren Winfield-Hill and Emma Marlow had laid the foundation for the Diamonds’ innings with a 95-run opening stand. However, the Thunder fought back, taking two wickets in quick succession.

Kalis and Langston then combined for a crucial 111-run partnership, reviving the Diamonds’ innings. Kalis reached her century before being dismissed, while Langston contributed a valuable 58.

The Diamonds’ total proved too much for the Thunder, who were bowled out for 204 despite Jones’ 57 runs.

Trent Rockets Snatch Three-Wicket Win to Keep Hundred Hopes Alive

Trent Rockets Snatch Three-Wicket Win to Keep Hundred Hopes Alive

Trent Rockets emerged victorious in a thrilling encounter against Birmingham Phoenix at Edgbaston, keeping their Hundred campaign alive. The Rockets, who entered the match tied on points with Northern Superchargers, secured a three-wicket win with just three balls remaining.

Birmingham Phoenix, without injured captain Sophie Devine, endured a shaky start, losing three wickets within the first 15 balls. Alexa Stonehouse dismissed Ellyse Perry, while Nat Sciver-Brunt accounted for Fran Wilson and Amy Jones. However, Sterre Kalis and Richa Ghosh steadied the innings with a record 95-run partnership for the fourth wicket. Kalis scored 47 off 44, while Ghosh contributed 41 off 36.

Sciver-Brunt, who finished with figures of 2 for 16, and Ashleigh Gardner, who took 2 for 17, played crucial roles in restricting Phoenix to 112 for 6.

In response, Trent Rockets lost early wickets, but Sciver-Brunt and Gardner put the visitors in control of the chase. However, a flurry of wickets between balls 70-80, including a run-out from Perry, made the task more challenging.

A debatable no-ball call reprieved Josie Groves, and Katie George joined Groves at the crease to guide the Rockets home.

“We probably got ahead of ourselves a bit earlier and gave ourselves a bit of relief towards the end,” said Sciver-Brunt. “It’s still all in our hands, if we beat the Oval Invincibles in our last game then we will be in that top three.”

Birmingham Phoenix's Inspired Bowling Stuns Welsh Fire in The Hundred

Birmingham Phoenix’s Inspired Bowling Stuns Welsh Fire in The Hundred

Birmingham Phoenix’s inspired bowling performance propelled them to a thrilling nine-run victory over Welsh Fire, keeping their hopes alive in The Hundred. Skipper Ellyse Perry orchestrated the triumph, claiming two crucial wickets in succession to stifle the Fire’s chase.

Phoenix’s innings was anchored by Sterre Kalis, who overcame a cautious start to smash eight boundaries and reach her maiden half-century in the tournament. Despite Hayley Matthews’s economical off-spin, Phoenix’s total of 121 proved sufficient on a turning pitch.

Welsh Fire’s pursuit began promisingly, with Matthews and Jess Jonassen forging a 46-run partnership. However, Hannah Baker’s leg-spin proved decisive, dismissing Jonassen and Georgia Elwiss in quick succession. Katie Levick then claimed the crucial wicket of Matthews, leaving the Fire needing 14 runs from the final set.

Emily Arlott’s composed bowling sealed the victory for Phoenix, restricting the Fire to 112 for 8. Perry’s early wickets, coupled with the spinners’ suffocating control, proved too much for the Fire to overcome.

Kalis, named the Meerkat Match Hero, expressed her delight at her contribution and the team’s resilience. “I’m really happy with the opportunity to go in up top,” she said. “Credit to Pez [Perry] early on and then the spinners. It wasn’t the highest total to defend, but the bowlers did an amazing job to restrict them.”

With two games remaining, Phoenix remains in contention for a playoff spot. Their victory over Welsh Fire has injected fresh momentum into their campaign, showcasing their ability to overcome adversity and perform under pressure.
