Indian Wrestling Stars Shine at U-23 World Championships
India’s rising wrestling stars showcased their prowess at the U-23 World Championships in Tirana, Albania, securing an impressive haul of nine medals. Among the highlights were two freestyle medals in the lower weight divisions, signaling India’s growing depth in these categories.
Chirag Chikara emerged as a force to be reckoned with, capturing the 57kg title. His victory underscores India’s dominance in this weight class, where Aman Sehrawat recently won bronze at the Paris Olympics. Sujeet Kalkal’s bronze in 70kg was equally impressive, demonstrating his consistency on the international stage.
Chirag’s title win is a testament to India’s talent pool in the 57kg division. Ravi Dahiya’s silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics and Sehrawat’s subsequent rise to prominence have set a high standard. Chirag aspires to follow in their footsteps, becoming only the second Indian freestyle wrestler to win a U23 world title.
“I have grown up idolizing Ravi Dahiya and Aman Sehrawat,” said Chirag. “They are my inspiration.”
Sujeet’s medal in Albania further solidifies his status as a rising star. He is eager to make his mark in the 65kg division at major tournaments. Unlike many Indian wrestlers who rely on power and endurance, Sujeet has developed a technical style that sets him apart.
The 65kg class is home to one of India’s most decorated wrestlers, Bajrang Punia. However, Punia’s recent struggles have opened the door for younger wrestlers like Sujeet to stake their claim.
“This weight category (57kg) is our strongest and you never know who will emerge from the shadows,” said coach Virender Kumar. “There are still four years before LA (2028 Olympics) and more talent will surface.”
India’s success at the U-23 World Championships is a testament to the depth and talent within the country’s wrestling program. As the next generation of wrestlers continues to emerge, India is poised to maintain its status as a global powerhouse in the sport.
