Goa Challengers Retain Ultimate Table Tennis Title, Diya Chitale Shines

The fifth edition of the Ultimate Table Tennis (UTT) concluded with Goa Challengers emerging victorious, successfully defending their title. The summit clash at the Jawaharlal Nehru indoor stadium in Chennai witnessed Goa Challengers triumph over Dabang Delhi 8-2.

Harmeet Desai and Yangzi Liu played pivotal roles in Goa Challengers’ victory. Desai and Liu secured their respective singles matches before teaming up to clinch the mixed doubles, setting the stage for Goa’s historic second consecutive title.

Despite their defeat, Dabang Delhi had a commendable season, with Sathiyan G and Diya Chitale showcasing exceptional performances. Chitale, a 21-year-old rising star, stunned India’s top paddler Manika Batra in the UTT 2024.

Chitale expressed her gratitude for the platform provided by UTT, stating, “UTT has been an incredible opportunity for young players like me. Sharing the court with top players has given me invaluable exposure. Sathiyan bhaiya has been an exceptional captain, always motivating us to excel.”

Chitale also shared her Olympic aspirations, aiming to represent India in Los Angeles 2028. “The Olympics are every athlete’s dream. I hope to win a medal. The training process is ongoing, and I’m committed to improving with each game,” she said.

Beyond table tennis, Chitale is an avid cricket fan and a staunch supporter of Virat Kohli. However, when asked to choose her favorite IPL team, she opted for Mumbai Indians, citing her Mumbai roots.

Ultimate Table Tennis 2024 (UTT 2024) witnessed an exciting clash between U Mumba TT and Ahmedabad SG Pipers at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium. Despite Manav Thakkar’s victory over his doubles partner Manush Shah in the opening men’s singles match, Ahmedabad SG Pipers emerged victorious, registering their second consecutive win.

Manav dominated the first two games, winning 11-2 and 11-9. However, Manush fought back to claim the third game, setting the stage for a thrilling encounter. Reeth Rishya leveled the tie for Ahmedabad SG Pipers with a 2-1 win over Sutirtha Mukherjee.

The mixed doubles match saw Manush and Bernadette Szocs outclass Manav and Maria Xiao 3-0. Quadri Aruna gave U Mumba TT a glimmer of hope with a 2-1 win over Lilian Bardet. But Szocs proved too strong for Xiao in the women’s singles, securing the victory for Ahmedabad SG Pipers.

Reeth Rishya was awarded the Indian Player of the Tie and DafaNews Shot of the Tie honors for her performance. Szocs claimed the Foreign Player of the Tie and ACT Tally of the Tie awards for her contributions in both singles and doubles.

Ultimate Table Tennis 2024: U Mumba TT and Ahmedabad SG Pipers Eye Second Win

U Mumba TT and Ahmedabad SG Pipers will clash at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium on Tuesday, both aiming to secure their second victory in the ongoing Ultimate Table Tennis (UTT) 2024 season.

Both teams have mirrored results in their opening two matches. U Mumba TT defeated Dabang Delhi TTC 9-6 in their first tie but fell to Jaipur Patriots by the same margin in their second. Ahmedabad SG Pipers, on the other hand, lost their UTT debut to Puneri Paltan Table Tennis 10-5 but bounced back to beat reigning champions Athlead Goa Challengers by the same score.

The franchise-based league, promoted by Niraj Bajaj and Vita Dani under the TTFI, is being broadcast live on Sports18 Khel on TV and JioCinema in India, and Facebook Live outside India. Tickets are available online through BookMyShow and offline at the stadium box office.

U Mumba TT is led by Indian ace Manav Thakkar, who displayed his resilience in the loss to Jaipur Patriots. He could potentially face off against Ahmedabad SG Pipers’ captain Manush Shah, promising an exciting encounter for table tennis enthusiasts.

Ahmedabad SG Pipers’ victory over Athlead Goa Challengers marked the first triumphs of UTT 2024 for their foreign stars Bernadette Szocs and Lilian Bardet. U Mumba TT will hope their upcoming clash does the same for their duo Quadri Aruna and Maria Xiao, who have yet to win a match despite showing glimpses of their prowess.

The tie between U Mumba TT and Ahmedabad SG Pipers could also feature a rematch between Sutirtha Mukherjee and Reeth Rishya in the women’s singles. In the previous season’s final, Sutirtha won the match, but Reeth claimed a game, helping Athlead Goa Challengers to an 8-7 victory.

Ultimate Table Tennis 2024 witnessed a thrilling encounter between debutants Jaipur Patriots and U Mumba TT, with the former emerging victorious 9-6. Despite a spirited fightback from Manav Thakkar, Jaipur Patriots’ international stars Cho Seung-min and Suthasini Sawettabut proved too strong.

Cho, in his second UTT match, stunned African legend Quadri Aruna 3-0 in the opening men’s singles. Suthasini followed suit, edging out Maria Xiao in a Golden Point thriller. Thakkar’s valiant efforts, including a 2-1 victory over Snehit SFR, kept U Mumba TT in contention.

However, Sutirtha Mukherjee’s loss to Nithyashree Mani sealed the tie for Jaipur Patriots. Mani’s composure and incredible shots proved decisive. Sharath, the league’s top-ranked Indian male paddler, showcased his brilliance in a 2-1 victory over Dabang Delhi TTC’s Andreas Levenko in the opening men’s singles match. The home favorite unleashed a barrage of powerful smashes, leaving the Austrian debutant in his wake.

Sharath’s triumph set the tone for the tie, with his teammates following suit. Sakura Mori extended Chennai Lions’ lead with a 2-1 win over Orawan Paranang in the first women’s singles match. Mori displayed her resilience, maintaining control despite Paranang’s repeated attempts to fight back.

The mixed doubles match followed a similar pattern, with Sharath and Mori teaming up to defeat Sathiyan Gnanasekaran and Paranang 2-1. The hosts sealed the tie in the next match, with Jules Rolland overcoming local boy Sathiyan in a thrilling two-game-to-one encounter.

In the final match, Dabang Delhi TTC’s Diyale Chitale made history. The Mumbai native, who had previously watched UTT as a fan, secured her first-ever victory in the league in her second year, defeating Poymantee Baisya 3-0.

Chitale’s impressive performance earned her the Indian Player of the Tie honor, while Mori claimed the Foreign Player of the Tie gong. Rolland was awarded the DafaNews Shot of the Tie award for his exceptional shot-making.

Tomorrow’s lone tie will feature PBG Bengaluru Smashers taking on Puneri Paltan TT at 17:00, with both teams aiming to make a significant impact in the tournament.

Ultimate Table Tennis 2024 witnessed its first upset as debutants Ahmedabad SG Pipers triumphed over reigning champions Athlead Goa Challengers. Led by captain Manush Shah, the Ahmedabad franchise secured their maiden victory in the tournament.

Shah played a pivotal role, defeating two-time Olympian Mihai Bobocica 2-1 in the men’s singles. Earlier, he partnered with Bernadette Szocs to achieve the same scoreline in the mixed doubles. Frenchman Lilian Bardet also contributed significantly, beating Harmeet Desai 3-0 in the first men’s singles.

Despite Sathiyan’s historic triumph over Aruna, Delhi Dabang was unable to match the prowess of U Mumba, who relied on the stellar performances of Manav Thakkar and Sutirtha Mukherjee to secure victory at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium.

Sathiyan faced an uphill battle in his season opener, trailing 7-0 against Aruna, the tournament’s top-ranked male player. However, the Indian Olympian displayed resilience, employing a robust defense and powerful smashes to claim the next two games 11-9 each.

Sutirtha Mukherjee restored U Mumba’s advantage in the first women’s singles match, defeating Diya Chitale in straight games. Sathiyan and Orawan Paranag attempted to level the tie in mixed doubles, but they were outplayed by the formidable pairing of Manav Thakkar and Maria Xiao.

Thakkar continued his impressive form in the second men’s singles, swiftly establishing a 2-0 lead over debutant Andreas Levenko. This victory sealed U Mumba’s historic triumph over Dabang Delhi.

Paranag salvaged a point for Delhi Dabang in the second women’s singles, defeating Xiao. The team will now face hosts Chennai Lions, while U Mumba TT will take on Jaipur Patriots on Sunday.

Alvaro Robles to Lead PBG Bengaluru Smashers in IndianOil Ultimate Table Tennis 2024

Star Spanish paddler Alvaro Robles will lead PBG Bengaluru Smashers in the IndianOil Ultimate Table Tennis 2024 as team captain. Robles, 33, will spearhead a talented sextet, which includes Indian ace Manika Batra, USA sensation Lily Zhang, youngsters Jeet Chandra and Taneesha Kotecha, and the highly experienced Amalraj Anthony.

Robles, a two-time Olympian, has qualified for the playoffs in all three of his previous UTT appearances. He starred in last season’s UTT final, sweeping Indian great Achanta Sharath Kamal 3-0.

Punit Balan, CEO of Punit Balan Group, owners of PBG Bengaluru Smashers, said: “We are delighted to have Alvaro Robles as the captain of the PBG Bengaluru Smashers. Alvaro’s track record speaks for itself-he’s a proven champion with the heart of a leader.”

Robles’ remarkable achievements include a historic silver medal at the 2019 World Table Tennis Championships in Budapest, Hungary, making him the first Spaniard to reach such heights in the sport. He also won a Mediterranean Games gold in 2020 and became the first Spanish player to reach the final in an ITTF Challenger Series event the same year.

“Being named captain of the PBG Bengaluru Smashers is a tremendous honor,” said Robles. “Leading such a talented group of players in a prestigious tournament like IndianOil Ultimate Table Tennis is a challenge I am eager to embrace.”

For the third time in UTT, Robles will work under Dutch coach Elena Timina, who herself coached her team to become UTT champion last year. Timina said: “I’m thrilled to be coaching Alvaro Robles again, especially in such an important role as team captain. Alvaro is not only a world-class player but also a strategic thinker who knows how to bring out the best in his teammates.”

PBG Bengaluru Smashers will begin their IndianOil UTT 2024 campaign on Friday (August 23) with a tie against hosts Chennai Lions. The team will subsequently play Puneri Paltan TT, debutants Jaipur Patriots and Ahmedabad SG Pipers, and Dabang Delhi TTC in their remaining league stage ties.
