USA Cricket Head Coach Stuart Law Departs

USA Cricket Head Coach Stuart Law Departs

USA Cricket Parts Ways with Head Coach Stuart Law

USA Cricket has announced the departure of Stuart Law as the head coach of the men’s national team. The decision, made in the midst of the team’s ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup League 2 campaign, came as a surprise to many.

Law’s tenure, which began in April 2023, lasted just over seven months. During that time, the team achieved notable successes, including a T20I series victory over Bangladesh and a historic qualification for the Super-Eights stage of the T20 World Cup.

However, despite these accomplishments, USA Cricket CEO Johnathan Atkeison stated that “it was not an easy decision to make.” He added, “Unfortunately, we felt that a change was necessary for the next phase of competitive preparation.”

Venu Pisike, Chair of USA Cricket, expressed gratitude for Law’s contributions. “We thank Stuart for his contributions to USA Cricket during his tenure. We wish him nothing but success in his future endeavors.”

The departure of Law leaves a void in the USA Cricket coaching staff. The team is currently second in the Cricket World Cup League 2 points table, with six wins in nine games. They are aiming to qualify for the 2027 ODI World Cup.

USA Cricket has not yet announced a replacement for Law. The team’s next match is scheduled for February 26 against Nepal in Dallas.

Milind Kumar’s Unique Record: First Batter to End ODI Innings with 155

India-born USA cricketer Milind Kumar has etched his name in the annals of ODI cricket history with a peculiar record. He became the first batter ever to finish an innings with a score of 155.

During a match against UAE in the ICC Cricket World Cup League Two, Kumar smashed a remarkable 155 off 110 deliveries. This unique feat marks the first time in the 53-year history of ODI cricket that a player has ended an innings with exactly 155 runs.

Despite numerous instances of batters scoring between 150 and 159 in ODI innings, Kumar’s knock stands out as the only one to conclude at precisely 155. This achievement highlights his exceptional batting prowess.

Kumar, a seasoned campaigner in first-class cricket, boasts an impressive average of nearly 50. He has played for Delhi and Sikkim in the Ranji Trophy, emerging as the highest run-scorer in the 2018-19 season. His IPL experience includes stints with the Delhi Daredevils and Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

The 33-year-old batter played a pivotal role in USA’s stunning performance at the 2024 T20 World Cup, where they reached the Super 8s. His 155-run knock in the ICC Cricket World Cup League Two helped USA post a formidable total of 339/4, leading to a 136-run victory over UAE.

USA currently occupies second place in the ICC CWC League Two table, ahead of established nations like Netherlands and Scotland. They trail league leaders Canada by just two points despite playing fewer games.

With 14 teams vying for a spot in the 2027 Cricket World Cup, USA has an opportunity to qualify for the main stage. Kumar’s unique record and consistent performances will undoubtedly be crucial to their aspirations.

PM Modi Lauds USA Cricket Team’s Performance in T20 World Cup

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has praised the performance of the United States men’s cricket team during the ICC T20 World Cup held in the United States and West Indies earlier this year. Addressing an Indian diaspora event at the Nassau Coliseum in New York, PM Modi said, “Some days back here, the T20 World Cup took place. The USA team played so well in that competition. That team had so many Indian people who are living here and their contributions were witnessed by the whole world.”

The USA hosted 16 matches during the T20 WC 2024, which was held from June 1 to June 29. Matches took place in New York’s Nassau County Stadium, Texas’s Grand Prairie Stadium, and Florida’s Central Broward Park. The USA team performed admirably, finishing second in the Group Stages with two wins and a loss. They defeated Pakistan in a thrilling Super Over and gave India a tough fight while defending a low total of 111 runs.

In the Super Eights, the USA lost all three of their matches but gave a strong performance against finalists South Africa, losing by 18 runs while chasing 195. This was the USA’s first World Cup appearance in either the 20 or 50-over formats.

Several players who represented India at the U19 level had strong performances for the USA in the tournament. Saurabh Netravalkar took six wickets, including those of Indian stars Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, Pakistan wicketkeeper-batter Mohammed Rizwan, and South African captain Aiden Markram. Harmeet Singh, an Indian U19 bowler who played for India in the 2012 U19 WC and domestic cricket for Mumbai, also played for the USA, taking four wickets and scoring 69 runs in four innings.

USA captain Monank Patel scored a crucial half-century against Pakistan, helping his team reach 159/3. India won the tournament, ending their 11-year ICC trophy drought.

PM Modi’s praise for the USA cricket team highlights the growing popularity of cricket in the United States and the contributions of Indian-American players to the sport.

One such player is Nisarg Patel, a left-arm spinner who migrated to the United States from India in 2003. Patel is eager to learn from some of the world’s best cricketers, including India’s Ravindra Jadeja and Virat Kohli.

“MS Dhoni is my favorite, but he’s retired now,” Patel said. “I want to take some tips from Ravindra Jadeja since he’s my type of player. Even a small tip from him can be very helpful.”

Patel and his teammates are thrilled to be participating in the T20 World Cup for the first time. “We’re very excited,” he said. “Playing against big teams like India and Pakistan is a dream for us. We’re looking forward to learning from them and making the most of this opportunity.”

The USA squad features a blend of experienced players and rising stars. Corey Anderson, a former New Zealand international, will join a select group of cricketers to represent two different teams at the World Cup. The team is led by 31-year-old wicket-keeper batter Monank Patel and includes other notable names such as opener Steven Taylor, Aaron Jones, and Saurabh Netravalkar.

Corey Anderson, a former New Zealand international, has been named in the USA squad for the 2024 T20 World Cup. Anderson, who represented New Zealand in the 2015 ODI World Cup and the 2014 and 2016 T20 World Cups, will now don the USA jersey for the upcoming tournament.

The USA squad also includes Ali Khan, who has experience playing in various T20 leagues worldwide, and Shayan Jahangir, who has represented USA in 12 ODIs. Gajanand Singh and Usman Rafiq have been dropped from the squad that recently defeated Canada in a five-match T20I series.

Monank Patel and Aaron Jones, who captained and vice-captained the team against Canada, have retained their positions. Patel was USA’s leading run-scorer in that series, while Harmeet Singh and Shadley Van Schalkwyk were the top wicket-takers.

Anderson, who has played in T20 leagues around the world, will bring valuable experience to the USA team. He has scored over 2,000 runs and taken over 100 wickets in T20 cricket. Khan, despite limited T20I experience, has played in the Caribbean Premier League, Pakistan Super League, and International League T20.

Jahangir, who began his career in Pakistan, has played 12 ODIs for USA. His inclusion adds depth to the team’s batting lineup.

USA will open the T20 World Cup against Canada in Dallas on June 1. The tournament will be co-hosted by the USA and the West Indies.

Stuart Law, the former Australian batsman, has been appointed as the new head coach of the USA men’s cricket team. Law’s first assignment will be the three-match T20I series at home against Bangladesh ahead of the T20 World Cup in June, which the USA will co-host with the West Indies.

Law expressed his excitement about the opportunity, stating, “It is an exciting opportunity to join USA cricket at this time. USA is one of the strongest Associate nations in the sport, and I believe that we can mold a formidable squad going ahead.” He added, “The first task will be to prepare the team for the series against Bangladesh and then set our sights on our home World Cup, which will be huge.”

USA Cricket chairman Venu Pisike praised Law’s experience and accomplishments, saying, “Stuart is one of the most accomplished coaches in the sport. He brings a lot of experience to USA Cricket with his varied assignments, particularly in developing international sides over the years.” Pisike continued, “His appointment will only help the team grow to their full potential. We are excited to have Stuart on board just before the World Cup and look forward to lots of successes together.”

Law has a wealth of coaching experience, having previously served as head coach for Bangladesh, West Indies, Sri Lanka, and Afghanistan on an interim basis. He has also coached the Bangladesh Under-19s and led Bangladesh to their first Asia Cup final in 2012. In Australia, Law has held various roles, including batting coach to the national team, a position with CA’s Centre of Excellence, and coaching the Under-19 team.

USA will face Bangladesh in three T20I matches at Prairie View, where they recently defeated Canada 4-0 in a T20I series. Law’s appointment is expected to bolster the USA team’s preparations for the upcoming T20 World Cup and help them achieve their full potential.

USA Completes 4-0 Sweep of Canada in T20I Series

USA’s Corey Anderson and Nitish Kumar led their team to a 4-0 series sweep over Canada in the T20I series, with a thrilling four-wicket victory at Prairie View.

Chasing 169, USA faced an early setback, losing three wickets for just nine runs. However, Anderson and Kumar steadied the innings with a 104-run partnership. Anderson, in his second match for USA, anchored the chase with a 48-ball 55, including two sixes and six fours. Kumar was more aggressive, scoring a 38-ball 64 with four sixes and four fours.

After Anderson’s dismissal, Nitish and Shadley van Schalkwyk fell in quick succession. But Harmeet Singh and Nisarg Patel calmly guided USA to victory in the final over.

For Canada, Harsh Thaker was the standout performer, scoring 38 runs and taking two wickets. Other batters made starts but failed to convert them into substantial scores.

Canada’s innings was characterized by a series of partnerships, with no batter able to dominate. Thaker’s 24-ball 38, which included three sixes, was the highest individual score.

Despite Canada’s efforts, USA’s bowling attack proved too strong. Rishiv Joshi dismissed Andries Gous with the second ball of the innings, while Saad Bin Zafar removed Aaron Jones and Gajanand Singh in the second over.

However, Anderson and Kumar’s partnership proved decisive, as USA once again demonstrated their superiority over Canada in the series.

Bangladesh, USA to Clash in T20I Series Ahead of World Cup

Bangladesh and the United States will engage in a three-match T20I series in May as part of their preparations for the upcoming T20 World Cup. This will be the first-ever T20I encounter between the two nations.

The series will serve as a crucial warm-up for both teams ahead of the global tournament, which will be co-hosted by the USA and the West Indies. Bangladesh has previously played two T20Is in the USA, both against the West Indies in 2018.

“This tour provides an ideal opportunity for the Bangladesh team to acclimatize to the conditions before the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024,” said Nizam Uddin Chowdhury, CEO of the Bangladesh Cricket Board. “We recognize the importance of this preparatory phase and are committed to making the most of this invaluable experience.”

Bangladesh will face Sri Lanka and South Africa in Dallas and New York, respectively, in the first two matches of their World Cup campaign. The series against the USA will help them adjust to the conditions and fine-tune their strategies.

Meanwhile, the USA will also host Canada for a five-match T20I series in April. All games will be played at the Prairie View Cricket Complex in Houston, Texas.

“Ahead of the important Men’s T20 World Cup, these games will be vital for our team to get their working combinations, build team cohesion, and fine-tune strategies,” said Mr. Venu Pisike, Chairman of USA Cricket.

Both the USA and Canada will make their T20 World Cup debuts in the tournament. They are placed in Group A alongside India, Ireland, and Pakistan. Bangladesh is in Group D and will face Nepal and the Netherlands in Kingstown, West Indies.
