Jasprit Bumrah Not Vice-Captain for India's First Test Against Bangladesh

Jasprit Bumrah Not Vice-Captain for India’s First Test Against Bangladesh

India’s star pacer Jasprit Bumrah will not serve as vice-captain in the upcoming first Test against Bangladesh, despite holding the position during the Test series against England earlier this year. This decision suggests a shift in the BCCI’s and team management’s approach to leadership roles.

Bumrah remains a key leader within the team, alongside KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, and Virat Kohli. However, the absence of a designated vice-captain for the Bangladesh series indicates that the BCCI may not envision Bumrah as a future captain. This could be due to the need to carefully manage his workload, as Bumrah has a history of injuries.

Bumrah has previously captained India in the rescheduled 2022 Test against England and the 2023 match against Ireland, where his leadership was praised. However, a captain’s consistent availability is crucial, and Bumrah’s injury history might hinder that.

With Gautam Gambhir now at the helm as head coach, India’s approach to vice-captaincy has shifted. Hardik Pandya was replaced by Suryakumar Yadav in T20Is, and Shubman Gill has taken over the vice-captaincy duties in both ODIs and T20Is. This raises speculation about Gill’s potential role in Test cricket.

The first Test between India and Bangladesh is set to begin on September 19 at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, followed by the second Test at Green Park Stadium in Kanpur from September 27.

Hardik Pandya's Vice-Captaincy Defended by Former BCCI Chief Selector

Hardik Pandya’s Vice-Captaincy Defended by Former BCCI Chief Selector

Hardik Pandya’s appointment as vice-captain of the Indian T20 World Cup squad has sparked both praise and criticism. Former BCCI chief selector MSK Prasad has defended the decision, asserting that Hardik is the best fast-bowling all-rounder in the country.

Despite recent struggles with form in the IPL, Prasad believes Hardik’s leadership qualities and all-round abilities make him an ideal choice for the vice-captaincy. He pointed out that Hardik has previously captained the Indian team in Rohit Sharma’s absence.

Prasad acknowledged Hardik’s recent form slump but attributed it to the change in leadership at Mumbai Indians. He expressed confidence that Hardik will regain his form before the World Cup.

“Once he puts on the Indian jersey, he can leave his IPL form behind,” Prasad said. “Hardik Pandya is the best fast bowling all-rounder in the country now, no matter what the pundits say.”

Hardik’s return from injury has been underwhelming, with poor performances in the IPL. However, Prasad believes that Hardik will bounce back and play a key role in India’s World Cup campaign.

“I think Hardik will come out of it,” Prasad said. “In the Indian team, his role will change. He will not have to worry about role clarity.”

Prasad’s comments come amid growing speculation about Hardik’s place in the Indian team. Some critics have questioned his form and leadership abilities, while others have defended his selection.

Ultimately, the decision of whether Hardik will justify his vice-captaincy will depend on his performances in the lead-up to and during the World Cup. If he can regain his form and provide the leadership that the team needs, he will prove to be a valuable asset to India’s chances of success.

Rishabh Pant Frontrunner for India’s T20 World Cup Vice-Captaincy

Rishabh Pant’s impressive return to form in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 has put him in contention to become India’s vice-captain for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024, ahead of all-rounder Hardik Pandya.

Pant, who has been out of action since a near-fatal car accident in December 2022, has shown remarkable resilience and skill in his comeback. In contrast, Pandya has struggled both as a batter and bowler in the ongoing IPL, raising questions about his leadership abilities.

According to a report by Cricbuzz, Pant’s current form gives him an edge over Pandya in the race to become Rohit Sharma’s deputy. The national selectors are expected to meet on May 1 to consider re-appointing Pant as vice-captain, a position he held before his injury hiatus.

Pant has previously captained India in the five-match T20I series against South Africa in June 2022. He is also expected to be India’s first-choice wicketkeeper for the T20 World Cup in June.

Other positions in the Indian squad for the World Cup are also up for grabs. Sanju Samson and KL Rahul are vying for the second wicket-keeper spot, while Shivam Dube and Rinku Singh are in contention for all-rounder roles.

The top order is likely to consist of Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, and Suryakumar Yadav. The middle order will feature Pant, Pandya, and Ravindra Jadeja.

Kuldeep Yadav is expected to be the specialist spinner, while Axar Patel may edge out Ravi Bishnoi for the other spinner’s position. Veteran spinner Yuzvendra Chahal, despite his impressive performance for Rajasthan Royals in the IPL, may once again miss out on selection.
