Rhodes Century Rescues Warwickshire in Worcestershire Draw

Rhodes Century Rescues Warwickshire in Worcestershire Draw

Warwickshire and Worcestershire played out a thrilling draw in their Vitality County Championship clash at Visit Worcestershire New Road, with Will Rhodes’ third century of the season proving crucial for the Bears.

Warwickshire, following on after being bowled out for 128 in their first innings, found themselves eight runs behind with three wickets down at the start of the final day. However, Rhodes, who is leaving Warwickshire for Durham at the end of the season, showed his class with an unbeaten 121 to steer his side to safety.

Rhodes, who has now scored 994 runs in first-class cricket this season, received excellent support from 18-year-old Hamza Shaikh (33 not out), who is enjoying a breakthrough season. The pair added an unbroken 83 as Warwickshire batted through the possible play on the fourth day without losing a wicket.

Worcestershire, despite their lengthy injury list, can reflect on a positive season that has virtually guaranteed them another campaign of Division One cricket. Away triumphs over Durham and Essex, after being firmly behind the eight-ball in both games, were evidence of their fighting spirit and belief.

The result leaves Worcestershire and Warwickshire 40 and 36 points respectively ahead of second-from-bottom Lancashire, with both sides strongly placed to ensure another season of top-flight cricket.

Kai Smith's Maiden Century Powers Warwickshire to One-Day Semi-Finals

Kai Smith’s Maiden Century Powers Warwickshire to One-Day Semi-Finals

Warwickshire’s Kai Smith emerged as an unlikely hero, smashing an unbeaten 130 to guide his team to a thrilling four-wicket victory over Worcestershire in the Metro Bank One Day Cup quarter-final at Edgbaston.

Chasing a challenging target of 286, Warwickshire found themselves in dire straits at 77 for 5. However, Smith, playing in only his second List A match, displayed remarkable composure and skill to rescue his side.

The 19-year-old right-hander played with a freedom and fluency that belied his inexperience. He struck 13 fours and 3 sixes in his match-winning knock, which came off just 104 deliveries.

Smith’s innings was perfectly complemented by a solid 75 from Will Rhodes, who anchored the chase and provided valuable support. The pair shared a crucial 181-run partnership for the sixth wicket, guiding Warwickshire to victory with six balls to spare.

Earlier, Worcestershire had posted a competitive 286 for 9, thanks largely to a stylish century from captain Jake Libby. The opener struck 112 from 115 balls, building on a solid foundation laid by Ed Pollock’s 54.

Ethan Brookes and Tom Taylor also made significant contributions with the bat, while Fateh Singh and Tom Hinley provided late impetus with some lusty blows.

Warwickshire’s bowlers had initially struggled to contain Worcestershire’s batsmen, but they fought back admirably in the latter stages. Ed Barnard, Jake Lintott, and Rae all picked up wickets, with Rae finishing with impressive figures of 3-54.

The victory sends Warwickshire into the semi-finals of the Metro Bank One Day Cup, where they will face Glamorgan on Sunday. Smith’s heroics have earned him widespread praise and have underlined his potential as a future star of the game.

Will Rhodes Departs Warwickshire for Durham

Will Rhodes Departs Warwickshire for Durham

Will Rhodes, the former Warwickshire captain who led the team to the County Championship title in 2021, has decided to leave the club at the end of the season. Rhodes, whose contract expires this year, was offered an extension but declined, citing a desire for a new challenge and a more competitive deal. He has since signed a long-term contract with Durham, where he will join an experienced batting lineup.

Rhodes’ departure was confirmed by Warwickshire on Saturday, while Durham has yet to announce his arrival. “It’s not been an easy decision,” Rhodes said. “I’ve spent most of my professional career here at Edgbaston, made life-long friends, and had success on the field. There are memories I will cherish for many, many years.”

“But I feel the time is right to move on and pick up a fresh challenge. Coming to the club as a 22-year-old, I never thought I’d get such an opportunity to captain a great club like Warwickshire. It’s been an unbelievable honour… I’d like to think I’ve made a positive contribution and helped take the club forward.”

Rhodes intends to remain with Warwickshire for the rest of the season to help the team avoid relegation, rather than joining Durham on loan early. “It goes without saying that I will be giving my all to the club for the rest of the season,” he said. “We’ve had a brilliant start in the One Day Cup. Who knows, it would be amazing to go out on a high by winning some silverware.”

After starting his career at Yorkshire, Rhodes has played 86 first-class matches for Warwickshire, averaging 35.85 with the bat and scoring 10 hundreds. He has also featured in 37 T20s and 36 List A games for the club. Rhodes was appointed club captain ahead of the 2020 season and led Warwickshire to their first Championship title since 2012 the following summer. He stepped down at the end of last year to focus on his own form.

Mark Robinson, Warwickshire’s coach, said: “When you work as a head coach with a captain for a number of years, you form a special bond which will always last. So personally, I would like to thank Will for all the support he has given me, as well as the wider club, both as a leader and a performer on the field.”

Durham recently announced the signing of New Zealand’s Neil Wagner for the Championship run-in and the One-Day Cup.
