Indian Men’s Recurve Team Reclaims World Cup Gold After 14 Years

Dhiraj Bommadevara, the lone Indian recurve archer to secure an Olympic quota for Paris 2024, played a pivotal role in India’s historic triumph at the Archery World Cup Stage 1 in Shanghai. The Indian men’s recurve team, comprising Bommadevara, Tarundeep Rai, and Pravin Ramesh Jadhav, defeated archery powerhouse Korea in the title round, reclaiming the gold medal after a 14-year hiatus.

Bommadevara, a beneficiary of the Sports Ministry’s Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS), also bagged a bronze medal in the mixed team event alongside Ankita Bhakat. India’s victory over Mexico in straight sets marked their second medal in Shanghai.

In an exclusive interview with SAI Media, Bommadevara shared his insights on the team’s success, their mindset, and their aspirations for the Paris Olympics.

On the Historic Gold Medal:

“We’re overjoyed,” Bommadevara exclaimed. “We executed our plan and maintained our focus throughout the competition.”

On the Team’s Mindset:

“We focused solely on our game and ignored our opponents,” Bommadevara explained. “We maintained clear communication and supported each other through every situation.”

On India’s Chances at Paris 2024:

“Tarundeep Rai’s experience is invaluable,” Bommadevara said. “He shares his tactical and philosophical insights, which helps us immensely. His dedication inspires us to push ourselves.”

Indian Men’s Archery Team Stuns Korea to Win World Cup Gold

In a historic triumph, the Indian men’s recurve archery team stunned reigning Olympic champions South Korea 5-1 (57-57, 57-55, 55-53) to claim the gold medal at the Archery World Cup Stage 1 in Shanghai. This victory marks India’s first World Cup men’s team gold in 14 years and significantly boosts their chances of qualifying for the Paris Olympics.

The Indian trio of Dhiraj Bommadevara, Tarundeep Rai, and Pravin Jadhav displayed remarkable resilience and precision against a formidable Korean team that included Tokyo Games gold medalists Kim Je-deok and Kim Woo-jin. Despite the absence of a coach due to a rule violation, the Indians remained composed and focused on their own performance.

In the first set, both teams tied 1-1 with a score of 57. However, the Indians seized the momentum in the second set, delivering four 10s (three Xs) to Korea’s two 8s, winning 57-55. They maintained their dominance in the third set, scoring 55-53, as the Koreans struggled to find a 10.

Dhiraj Bommadevara, who has already secured an individual Paris Games quota, expressed his delight at the team’s achievement. “This result gives us a big boost in the Olympic year,” he said. “This medal feels good, especially with the amount of work we’ve been doing in the past couple of years, keeping just this Olympics in mind.”

The Indian men’s team’s victory is a testament to their hard work and determination. With two more spots available through world rankings and three more at the final qualification tournament, they are well-positioned to secure a quota for the Paris Olympics.

Meanwhile, Deepika Kumari made a triumphant return to the World Cup stage after two years, winning the women’s recurve silver medal. She defeated Korean archers Jeon Hunyoung and Nam Suhyeon before falling to Lim Si-hyeon in the final.

Tarundeep Rai's Comeback: From Asian Games Snub to World Cup Gold

Tarundeep Rai’s Comeback: From Asian Games Snub to World Cup Gold

Tarundeep Rai, India’s veteran archer, has made a remarkable comeback after being excluded from the Asian Games team last year. The snub ignited a fire within him, leading him to adopt drastic lifestyle changes and intensify his training.

Rai, a three-time Olympian, was devastated by his omission from the Hangzhou Asian Games despite his strong performances. “I was boiling with anger,” he recalled. “I decided to give it one last shot.”

To regain his fitness and competitiveness, Rai embarked on a strict diet and dedicated more time to the gym. He shed 12kg in two months, determined to prove his worth.

His efforts paid off when he made the cut for the Indian team for the World Cup and Olympics after a two-month trial. In Shanghai, Rai and his teammates Dhiraj Bommadevara and Pravin Jadhav created history by defeating reigning Olympic champions South Korea to win the World Cup gold.

Rai attributed their success to their unwavering focus and the inclusion of a sports psychologist. “We didn’t think about winning over Korea,” he said. “We just went there to replicate what we have been doing at practice.”

The victory marked the first time an Indian men’s team had defeated archery powerhouse Korea in a World Cup final. It also boosted their chances of qualifying for the Paris Olympics.

Rai, who began his international career in 2003, is now in the best shape of his life. “I feel amazing right now,” he said. “I’ve got this childlike energy that keeps me going.”

His journey serves as an inspiration to athletes of all ages, proving that with determination and hard work, anything is possible.

Essex Secures Tier 1 Status in Women's Cricket, Targets World Cup Hosting

Essex Secures Tier 1 Status in Women’s Cricket, Targets World Cup Hosting

Essex Cricket Club has secured Tier 1 status in the new professional structure for women’s cricket, a significant milestone that opens up exciting opportunities for the club and the region. The decision by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) recognizes Essex’s commitment to developing women’s cricket and its potential to become a leading force in the sport.

The club’s bid, supported by the University of Essex and cricket boards in neighboring counties, was chosen over other strong contenders in the South East of England. This achievement is a testament to Essex’s vision and the strength of its partnership with the university, which will provide access to expertise in sports science and training facilities.

Essex’s home ground at Chelmsford, with a current capacity of approximately 5,000, is the smallest among the eight Tier 1 clubs. However, club chief executive John Stephenson believes the ground’s intimate atmosphere will be an advantage in the short term as the club grows alongside the women’s game.

In the long term, Stephenson expects the Tier 1 status to accelerate the club’s redevelopment plans. Consultation with local residents and Chelmsford City Council is underway, with the aim of doubling the ground’s capacity to 10,000 by the time of the men’s T20 World Cup in 2030.

“It will link into our development plans because what’s held the club back has been the lack of investment in the ground,” Stephenson said. “We’re confident in our masterplan, and the commercial possibilities relating to the women’s game are huge.”

The club’s ambition was boosted by its successful hosting of an Ireland-Bangladesh ODI series last season, which drew enthusiastic support from the Bangladeshi community in East London. With the Women’s World Cup due to be held in England in 2026, Stephenson is confident that Chelmsford can be ready to host more major matches in the near future.

“If we can get a spade in the ground next year, by 2030 the women’s game will have grown exponentially, and hopefully we’ll be ready to host a World Cup match for the men in 2030,” he said.

Essex’s Tier 1 status is also a vindication of the club’s efforts to confront allegations of historic racist abuse. The club has taken significant action to address these issues, and the ECB’s decision recognizes the progress that has been made.

“It is pleasing that the ECB recognize that we have dealt with the situation that we were confronted with,” Stephenson said. “Now the club is moving in a great direction, and that is particularly satisfying.”

Shardul Thakur: The Cult Hero of Indian Cricket

Shardul Thakur: The Cult Hero of Indian Cricket

Shardul Thakur, the enigmatic all-rounder, has carved a niche for himself in Indian cricket with his unique blend of skills and unwavering determination. Known affectionately as “Lord” or “Beefy,” he has earned a reputation as a match-winner and a cult hero.

Growing up in a humble background in Palghar, Thakur’s journey to the pinnacle of cricket was not without its challenges. Despite his passion for the sport, he initially aspired to become a cricketer like Sachin Tendulkar. However, it was only after being selected for the Ranji Trophy that he realized his true potential.

Thakur’s rise to prominence was marked by his ability to deliver under pressure. He credits his upbringing and the hardships he faced for instilling in him a resilience that has become his trademark. “I like to excel in tough situations,” he says. “That’s what brings the best out of me.”

One of Thakur’s most memorable performances came in the 2019 ODI World Cup, where he emerged as India’s highest wicket-taker among seamers. Despite his impressive contribution, he faced criticism and was often dropped from the team. However, Thakur remained unfazed, believing that he deserved a fair chance to prove his worth.

“I understand that competition is always good,” he says. “But all I am saying is that you should be fair to everyone. Shouldn’t be like one fellow has one bad game and he is dropped, whereas another fellow is persisted with despite having two or five bad games.”

Thakur’s determination and self-belief have paid off. He has become a vital cog in the Chennai Super Kings franchise in the Indian Premier League and has earned a regular spot in the Indian Test team. His ability to swing the ball both ways and his aggressive batting style have made him a formidable all-rounder.

Despite his success, Thakur remains grounded and grateful for the opportunities he has been given. He credits his coaches and mentors for shaping his career and helping him overcome challenges. “I have never thought about what I would have been had I not been a cricketer,” he says. “I am just fortunate to be able to do what I love.”

Swiss Skiing Stars Odermatt and Gut-Behrami Dominate World Cup

SAALBACH-HINTERGLEMM, Austria – Swiss skiing sensation Marco Odermatt continued his remarkable season by securing the World Cup super-G crystal globe on Friday, adding to his already impressive haul of overall and giant slalom titles.

Under the warm Austrian sun, Odermatt skied cautiously in the final super-G race, finishing fifth to clinch the season-long title. The victory was particularly sweet as three other Swiss skiers swept the podium places, with Stefan Rogentin claiming his maiden World Cup win.

Rogentin, Loïc Meillard, and Arnaud Boisset finished 1-2-3, showcasing the depth of Swiss skiing talent. Odermatt, who started immediately after his closest challenger Vincent Kriechmayr, praised Rogentin’s performance.

“Roggy deserved his first victory,” Odermatt said. “I watched from the start and they skied amazing.”

Odermatt’s super-G triumph marks his third consecutive overall World Cup title at the age of 26. He now has a commanding lead in the overall standings with 1,947 points, putting him in contention to break his own record for the highest points total in a single season.

Earlier in the day, Lara Gut-Behrami, another Swiss skiing star, secured the women’s super-G season title by finishing seventh in the race. Gut-Behrami, who also holds the overall and giant slalom titles, leads the downhill standings going into Saturday’s season-ending race.

Both Odermatt and Gut-Behrami have been dominant forces in the World Cup this season, showcasing the strength of Swiss skiing. With the downhill races remaining, they have the opportunity to further extend their impressive records.

North Korea's World Cup Qualifier Moved to Neutral Venue

North Korea’s World Cup Qualifier Moved to Neutral Venue

North Korea’s home World Cup qualifier against Japan on Tuesday will be held at a neutral venue, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) announced. The decision comes just four days before the scheduled match, leaving little time to find an alternative location.

The AFC confirmed that the game will still take place as planned on Tuesday, but did not disclose the reason for the change in venue. However, Japanese news agency Kyodo reported that North Korea expressed concerns over bacterial infections in Japan.

North Korean officials had initially requested that the match be held in Japan, but the Japanese Football Association (JFA) declined due to the short notice. The JFA also cited security concerns, as Japan’s foreign ministry had warned football fans against traveling to North Korea.

The match in Pyongyang would have been the first game in North Korea for Japan’s men’s team since 2011. It would have also been a rare international football match in North Korea, which has been isolated from the international community due to its nuclear and missile programs.

Despite its isolation, North Korea has qualified for the World Cup twice before. In 1966, they famously beat Italy 1-0 and made it to the quarter-finals. They also qualified in 2010, but were knocked out at the group stage after three defeats.

The change in venue for the World Cup qualifier is the latest setback in relations between Japan and North Korea. The two countries have long been at odds over issues such as Japan’s occupation of the Korean peninsula during World War II and North Korea’s missile tests.

Virat Kohli's Unquenchable Thirst for World Cup Glory

Virat Kohli’s Unquenchable Thirst for World Cup Glory

Virat Kohli’s Unquenchable Thirst for World Cup Glory

Former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh believes that star batsman Virat Kohli remains driven by an unyielding desire to secure another World Cup triumph. Despite missing out on the prestigious title on three previous occasions, Kohli’s hunger for victory remains undiminished.

Kohli made his World Cup debut in 2011, where he played a pivotal role in India’s historic victory, ending the country’s 28-year wait for the coveted prize. Since then, he has participated in eight World Cups, shattering numerous records along the way. He surpassed batting legend Sachin Tendulkar’s record for the most centuries in ODIs and secured the highest run tally in a single edition of a World Cup.

However, despite these achievements, Kohli’s desire for the elusive World Cup title remains unfulfilled. Harbhajan Singh believes that this burning desire will continue to fuel Kohli’s performances until he finally gets his hands on the trophy.

“Virat Kohli didn’t appear on the ground. He needed a well-deserving rest and he got it. In 2011 he won a World Cup, he got into the team and he won the World Cup for the first time, we had already played three or four World Cups and he won it for the first time. It was luck and after that, Virat turned into a big player he played in 2015, 2019, and 2023, and even after that he couldn’t get his hands on the trophy,” Harbhajan said on his YouTube channel.

“So that feeling stays in the mind of the player. I think he won’t be satisfied until he gets his hand on the trophy. He has broken a lot of records and scored a lot of runs. His hunger will be satisfied when he gets his hands on the World Cup trophy,” he added.

Kohli will return to the field in the IPL 2024, where he will lead Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in their quest for their maiden IPL title. RCB will kick off their IPL 2024 campaign against defending champions Chennai Super Kings in the season opener at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Bengaluru.
