Andreeva and Kasatkina Advance to Ningbo Open Final After Opponents Retire

Andreeva and Kasatkina Advance to Ningbo Open Final After Opponents Retire

Mirra Andreeva and Daria Kasatkina have advanced to the final of the WTA 500 Ningbo Open after their semifinal opponents retired due to injuries.

Kasatkina, the No. 5 seed, was leading Paula Badosa 6-4 when the Spaniard retired due to dizziness. Badosa had previously withdrawn from the WTA 1000 in Wuhan due to illness.

Andreeva, a 17-year-old qualifier, was leading Karolina Muchova 6-2, 1-0 when the Czech retired with a back injury. Muchova had missed the first six months of 2024 after wrist surgery.

The withdrawals of Badosa and Muchova continue a trend of retirements at the Ningbo Open. Seven lucky losers have entered the field after the top three seeds, Jasmine Paolini, Zheng Qinwen, and Emma Navarro, all withdrew without playing a match.

Andreeva and Kasatkina will face off in the final on Sunday. It will be their first career meeting.

Kasatkina has won five of her seven career WTA singles titles at the WTA 500 level, but she has lost six of her last seven finals. Her only victory in that span came on grass in Eastbourne in June.

Andreeva, meanwhile, won her first tour-level crown at the WTA 250 level in Iasi, Romania in July.

The Ningbo Open has been plagued by injuries and withdrawals, but Andreeva and Kasatkina have emerged as the finalists. They will both be looking to win their second tournament title of 2024 on Sunday.

Ningbo Open: Lucky Losers Dominate as Withdrawals Mount

Ningbo Open: Lucky Losers Dominate as Withdrawals Mount

The Ningbo Open, a WTA 500 event, has witnessed a significant influx of lucky losers, with a quarter of the field now filled by players who initially failed to qualify.

The tournament has been plagued by withdrawals, including Jasmine Paolini, Emma Navarro, and most notably, home favorite Zheng Qinwen. Zheng’s absence has opened the door for Jaqueline Cristian, who lost in the opening round of qualifying but has now advanced to the second round to face Karolina Muchova.

The chaos continued when Kathinka Von Deichmann, who had also lost in qualifying, found herself involved in two first-round matchups between lucky losers. However, her hopes were dashed by Ella Seidel of Germany.

The situation took an even more bizarre turn when Yuliia Starodubtseva of Ukraine revealed on social media that she was attempting to fly back to Ningbo as the No. 7 lucky loser in line. However, with Cristian already in the main draw, it appears that Starodubtseva has missed her chance.

Despite the disruptions, the tournament has progressed, with Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova emerging as the highest seed remaining at No. 4. Fifth seed Daria Kasatkina has advanced to the quarterfinals after a hard-fought victory over Katerina Siniakova, setting up a clash with Yulia Putintseva.

The Ningbo Open has provided a platform for both established stars and rising talents, with the unpredictable nature of the tournament adding an extra layer of excitement.

Polish Tennis Triumphs: Frech Wins WTA Title, Swiatek Ties Barty for No. 1

Polish Tennis Triumphs: Frech Wins WTA Title, Swiatek Ties Barty for No. 1

Polish tennis is experiencing a remarkable surge, with two significant milestones achieved within 24 hours. On Sunday, Magdalena Frech triumphed in the WTA 500 event in Guadalajara, securing her maiden WTA title. This victory propelled her to a career-high ranking of No. 32, making her the second-highest-ranked Polish woman behind world No. 1 Iga Swiatek.

Meanwhile, Swiatek continues to dominate the WTA rankings, entering her 121st week at the summit. This achievement ties her with Ashleigh Barty for seventh-most weeks at No. 1 in WTA history. Swiatek is poised to surpass Barty next week and has a significant lead over No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka in both the overall and year-to-date rankings.

The WTA rankings also witnessed two Top 100 debuts this week. Olivia Gadecki of Australia, who reached the final in Guadalajara, soared to No. 88, while Sonay Kartal of Great Britain jumped to No. 96 after winning the WTA 250 title in Monastir, Tunisia.

In contrast, the ATP rankings remained relatively unchanged due to the absence of ATP events last week. Most top players participated in the Davis Cup, which does not offer ranking points.

Qualifier Gadecki, Frech to Clash in Guadalajara Open Final

In a thrilling WTA 500 Guadalajara Open Akron, qualifier Olivia Gadecki and No. 5 seed Magdalena Frech have emerged as the finalists, setting the stage for a captivating championship match on Sunday.

Gadecki, a 22-year-old Australian mentored by former world No. 1 Ashleigh Barty, has made history by reaching her first WTA singles final. Her impressive run began with two qualifying wins, followed by victories over former US Open champion Sloane Stephens and No. 2 seed Danielle Collins. In the semifinals, she dispatched Camila Osorio 6-2, 6-3, extending her winning streak to six matches.

Frech, ranked No. 43, has also had a remarkable tournament. She rallied from a 3-0 deficit in the first set and a 3-0 deficit in the second set to defeat former world No. 4 Caroline Garcia in the semifinals. This victory marks her first singles final appearance on tour in over a year.

Both Gadecki and Frech are guaranteed to make history in the final. Gadecki will break into the Top 100 for the first time, regardless of the outcome. Frech, meanwhile, is assured of a Top 40 ranking, also regardless of the result.

The Guadalajara Open has been a tournament of upsets, with five former Top 10 players among the Top 8 seeds. However, Gadecki and Frech have proven their mettle, showcasing their resilience and determination.

Sunday’s final promises to be a thrilling encounter between two rising stars. Gadecki’s aggressive style and Frech’s ability to overcome adversity will make for a captivating match.
