Tennis Grips India — The Complete Overgrip Guide

The tennis overgrip is the most frequently replaced, most undervalued piece of tennis equipment. Every shot you play travels through your grip — it is the only contact point between you and your racquet. A fresh overgrip gives you tackiness and sweat absorption that translates directly into grip security, reduced hand tension, and cleaner shot execution. A worn overgrip forces your hand to squeeze harder, increasing forearm fatigue and reducing wrist snap on serve. In India’s climate — where temperatures regularly exceed 35°C across Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Bangalore and Chennai, and humidity is high through most of the year — overgrips degrade faster than anywhere a Western tennis guide was written for. You need to replace them more often, and you need reliable supply.

At God of Sports, we stock tennis overgrips in India from three brands — Yonex, HEAD, and Tourna — covering every grip preference from the world’s most popular overgrip to professional tour-standard tacky PU to bulk economy packs for clubs and academies. All shipped pan-India from Mumbai in 3–5 business days.

Base Grip vs Overgrip — What You Actually Need

Your racquet comes with a base grip — a thicker, more cushioned grip that forms the structural foundation of your handle. Base grips last 6–12 months and are replaced infrequently. The overgrip wraps over the base grip and is what you actually feel when you play. Overgrips are thin, lightweight, cheap, and replaced regularly — every 3–10 hours of play depending on conditions. Most players replace the overgrip, not the base grip, as their primary maintenance routine.

When to replace your overgrip:

  • The surface feels smooth or slippery rather than tacky
  • You notice your hand slipping during serve or groundstrokes
  • Visible sweat discolouration or saturation through the grip
  • The grip has lost its white/coloured appearance and looks grey-brown

Indian summer rule: In peak summer conditions (March–June in most Indian cities), replace after 3–4 sessions. In monsoon humidity (Mumbai, Chennai), possibly every 2–3 sessions. In the cooler months (November–February), every 5–8 sessions is normal.

Tennis Overgrips at God of Sports — Complete Range

Yonex AC102 EX Super Grap Overgrip — 7 Colours

The Yonex AC102 EX Super Grap is the world’s best-selling overgrip — first launched in 1987, still the industry benchmark after nearly four decades. Made from polyurethane, it provides a precise balance of tackiness, durability, and sweat absorption that no competing grip has consistently matched. It is used across tennis, badminton, and padel racquets by players at every level. The Super Grap has a slightly thicker feel than some competing overgrips, adding a touch of cushioning that many players prefer for extended sessions.

Available at God of Sports in seven colourways — match your overgrip to your racquet or play identity:

Best for: All-round players, tennis and badminton and padel, players who want the proven industry standard
Feel: Tacky, slightly cushioned, excellent durability
Compatible with: All racquet brands — tennis, badminton, padel, squash

HEAD Prime Tour Overgrip — White & Black

The HEAD Prime Tour Overgrip is HEAD’s professional-standard overgrip — used by HEAD-sponsored ATP players and designed for the demands of match and tournament play. Thinner than the Yonex Super Grap, it provides a more direct feel of the handle beneath, which many advanced players prefer for better touch on volleys and slice. Excellent tackiness fresh out of the wrapper. Available in White and Black.

Best for: Advanced players, HEAD racquet users, players who prefer a thinner grip feel with direct handle feedback
Feel: Tacky, thin, direct handle feel

Tourna Original Overgrip XL — Pack of 36 (Blue)

The Tourna Original Overgrip XL takes a different approach to the Super Grap and Prime Tour: it is a dry, absorbent overgrip rather than a tacky one. Tourna’s unique polymer material feels dry to the touch but becomes more grippy as it absorbs sweat — the opposite of tacky grips, which peak fresh and degrade as they get wet. This makes Tourna the preferred overgrip for players with particularly sweaty hands, or for playing in Indian monsoon conditions where sweat saturation is a constant problem. The pack of 36 makes it the most economical option for regular players and clubs.

Best for: Players with sweaty hands, monsoon season play (Mumbai/Chennai/Kolkata), clubs buying in volume
Feel: Dry and absorbent — grippier as it gets wet, not less grippy
Value: Best per-grip price of all GOS overgrips in the 36-pack format

Overgrip Comparison — Choosing the Right One

Tourna Original XL Tourna Dry, absorbent Medium Sweaty hands, monsoon conditions, bulk buying

How to Apply a Tennis Overgrip — Correctly

A poorly applied overgrip creates uncomfortable ridges and peels off faster. Apply correctly:

  1. Remove your old overgrip completely and dispose of it
  2. Start at the base of the handle, just above the butt cap, at a 45° angle
  3. Wrap in overlapping layers upward toward the throat — each layer overlapping the previous by 2–3mm
  4. Pull the grip slightly taut as you wrap — not stretching it, but maintaining consistent tension
  5. Finish at the shoulder of the handle and secure with the finishing tape that comes with the overgrip
  6. For Indian conditions: apply at room temperature. Overgrips applied in direct sun or extreme heat may not bond as cleanly

Frequently Asked Questions — Tennis Grips India

How often should I replace my tennis overgrip?

Every 3–5 sessions in Indian summer conditions; every 5–8 sessions in cooler months. Replace immediately when tackiness is noticeably gone or when your hand slips during play.

What is the difference between tacky and dry overgrips?

Tacky overgrips (Yonex Super Grap, HEAD Prime Tour) feel sticky fresh and provide immediate grip security. They gradually lose tackiness as sweat saturates them. Dry overgrips (Tourna Original) feel smooth when dry but become grippier as they absorb moisture — better suited to players with heavy hand sweat.

Can I use a tennis overgrip on a padel or badminton racquet?

Yes — the Yonex AC102 EX Super Grap is designed for multi-sport use and works identically on tennis, badminton, padel, and squash racquets. For padel-specific overgrips, we also stock NOX Pro Overgrips.

Do professional tennis players change overgrips every match?

Many ATP and WTA professionals change their overgrip before every match, and some change mid-match during changeovers. For recreational players, this is not necessary — but changing every 3–5 sessions in Indian conditions is the practical equivalent of maintaining professional-level grip security.
