Cody Gakpo signs for Liverpool

Liverpool beat Man United to get Cody Gakpo from PSV Eindhoven

In a dramatic turn of events, Liverpool has signed Netherlands winger Cody Gakpo from PSV Eindhoven. The player, a key target for Manchester United, has been signed for a record transfer fee.

As per ESPN, the fee of the deal is around £37 million plus add-ons, up to £50m potential package. The sides are close to finalising his arrival in the January transfer window. PSV did not disclose the deal’s value, but general manager Marcel Brands said it would be a “record transfer” for the club.

The Dutch club said in a statement: “PSV and Liverpool FC have reached an agreement on the proposed transfer of Cody Gakpo. The 23-year-old attacker will leave for England imminently, where he will be subjected to the necessary formalities ahead of the transfer completion.”

The signing will be great for Liverpool since Luis Diaz is facing a severe injury after aggravating a knee injury during a midseason training break in Dubai. Also, their star signing, Darwin Nunez, is going through a rough patch.

Cody Gakpo has been a key player for PSV Eindhoven. The star has scored 36 goals in just 106 appearances for the Dutch club. Also, the winger impressed during the recently concluded 2022 FIFA World Cup, scoring 3 goals in 5 games.

Liverpool has had a torrid time, with the team currently in 6th position in the English Premier League. With the latest acquisition, the team might see a great improvement in performance.

Robert Lewandowski selects this player to win Ballon d’Or 2023

Barcelona’s star player Robert Lewandoski feels Lionel Messi’s World Cup win has made him a clear winner at the next Ballon d’Or ceremony. In his final World Cup campaign, Messi led the Albiceleste to glory in Qatar, scoring twice in the final before his side beat Kylian Mbappe and France in the penalty shootout.

Lewandowski said: “There is maybe one more player who plays for the same club, but there is only one World Cup that decides who is going to win it this season, and Leo is now in the top position for sure because of what he has achieved which means everything to him. He now can enjoy it.”

Lionel Messi was in supreme form at the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The PSG star scored 7 goals in the tournament, winning the Golden Ball.

As per reports, there was some talk surrounding Messi’s return to Barcelona. Upon being quizzed regarding the same, Lewandowski said, “It’s not up to me. But compared to other times, he is now the footballer that any striker would dream of playing alongside him.”

However, 90min understands PSG are convinced Messi will stay in France and sign a new contract, though the Argentina forward is not looking to commit for more than 18 months.

Man United advance to quarterfinals of EFL Cup after thrashing Burnley

Club football is back!! After a satisfying end to the World Cup, club football in England is back. Man United and Burnley locked horns in EFL Cup yesterday, with the English club thrashing Burnley to advance to the quarterfinals of the tournament.

The match began with Eriksen getting on the scoresheet in the 27th minute before Rashford doubled the advantage in the second half of United’s first game since the World Cup. Manchester United could have doubled the lead when Burnley goalkeeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell saved Anthony Martial’s shot. Burnley got a chance to equalise, but Marcus Rashford stepped in and made it 2-0 with his individual effort.

Man United’s manager, Erik ten Hag, praised Marcus Rashford for his incredible performance. He said, “I think he’s on a very good level. His performances are improving a lot, I would say, from game to game. He’s a continued threat today but also many other games in this season, he’s scored already a lot of goals. Also, there’s a lot of defending work, don’t forget that. So I’m really happy with his performances and I hope but I expect him to keep going in this attitude and in this performance level.”

In other news, Nottingham Forest also reached the quarterfinals after a 4-1 win over second-division Blackburn. Elsewhere, third-tier Charlton caused an upset as they defeated Premier League club, Brighton.

90min Football ranks Lionel Messi as the greatest footballer of all time

Lionel Messi, who recently won the 2022 FIFA World Cup with Argentina, has been voted the greatest footballer of all time by 90min football. As per the report, Messi occupies the first spot, followed by fellow Argentine legend Diego Maradona and Brazil’s once-in-a-generation player Pele.

Lionel Messi has a lot of extraordinary achievements to his name. But the World Cup trophy eluded him. Now with the World Cup win, the forward has cemented his G.O.A.T. status. The greatest goal-scorer in Barcelona’s history has been voted UEFA Men’s Player of the Year in 2011 & 2015 and won the 2014 & 2022 FIFA World Cup Golden Ball. He was also voted the 2005 Young European Footballer of the Year, among many other achievements.

The year 2012 saw Messi in his prime. At his peak, he scored 91 goals in a calendar year, won six Ballon d’Or, and a boatload of club honours; in his relative decline, he won another Ballon d’Or and guided Argentina to their third World Cup triumph by putting in one of the greatest individual tournament performances we’ve ever seen.

As per the report, Franz Beckenbauer and Johan Cryuff are ranked 4 and 5, respectively. The other footballers who are ranked in the top 10 comprise Ronaldo Nazario, Zinedine Zidane, Cristiano Ronaldo, Michel Platini and Roberto Baggio.

With Messi being ranked as the greatest footballer of all time, the debate about Ronaldo vs Messi should be put to an end. Do you think Messi is truly the greatest footballer? Share your thoughts in the comments section.

Messi is finally a World Champion; Argentina beats France 4-2 in penalties

In one of the most thrilling World Cup finals, Lionel Messi’s Argentina managed to win the 2022 FIFA World Cup beating France 4-2 in penalties after the game went into extra time. After winning the Copa America 2021 and Finalissma 2022, this is the third trophy in his cabinet in recent times.

The game saw both teams in attacking mode. However, it was Argentina who got the first real chance as they managed to win a foul inside the box. Argentina’s captain Lionel Messi took the penalty and made sure the La Albiceleste have a lead over the defending champs. To rub salt in their wounds, Angel di Maria scored a wonderful goal to give the Argentinians a comfortable lead of 2-0 going into half-time.

After the half-time break, we saw a very different France team. They were very aggressive and consistent in their attacks. In the 79th minute, France won a penalty as Otamendi made a rash tackle on France’s Kolo Muani. Kylian Mbappe, the star striker of France, made sure France had the lead down to just one goal. As Argentina was trying to recover, the PSG striker stunned the Argentinians with a stunning strike to even the game. With 97 seconds between the two goals, Kylian Mbappe managed to bring life into the dull game and take the World Cup into extra time.

The first half of the extra time saw a very motivated Argentina, who were trying their best to give an unforgettable send-off to their talismanic skipper. And they succeeded, as Lionel Messi managed to create a moment of magic on the pitch with a stunning goal. However, as everyone thought, the final was done, and there won’t be any more drama; France won a penalty. Kylian Mbappe had already scored a brace but managed to score one more and complete his hat trick. With the additional extra time over, the game’s scoreline was 3-3, and it was time for the penalties.

France’s Kingsley Coman and Aurelien Tchouameni crumbled under pressure and missed their respective spot kicks. Argentina managed to keep their calm with Lionel Messi, Paulo Dybala, Leandro Paredes and Gonzalo Montiel, breaching the defence of France’s goalkeeper Hugo Lloris. Argentina’s 4 successful penalties helped the La Albiceleste lift the World Cup trophy for only the third time (1978, 1986 and 2022).

Fernando Santos has quit as Portugal's coach

Fernando Santos quits as Portugal coach; Jose Mourinho to succeed

Fernando Santos has quit as Portugal’s coach after his team’s dismal performance in the World Cup, the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) confirmed. The 68-year-old departs in the wake of a World Cup quarter-final defeat to Morocco, a frustrating end to a terrific spell in charge that saw him lead Portugal to multiple titles.

The FPF said, “After one of the best participations ever by the national team in the final stages of the World Cup…FPF and Fernando Santos understand this is the right moment to start a new cycle.” The move comes in wake of huge criticism surrounding the coach’s controversial move to bench Cristiano Ronaldo in the FIFA World Cup quarterfinal clash against Morocco.

Santos, who was heavily criticised for his defensive tactics, became one of the most successful coaches in Portugal’s history, winning the UEFA Euro 2016 and UEFA Nations League in 2019.

The FPF further added, “In addition to the titles won, Fernando Santos became the coach with the most games and most victories. It was an honour to have a coach and a person like Fernando Santos as the head of the national team.”

Additionally, Jose Mourinho, the current coach of AS Roma, is rumoured to be approached for the high-profile job. Will the “Special One” be able to break the jinx and finally help Portugal lift the World Cup trophy?

Kane Williamson steps down as New Zealand’s Test captain

Kane Williamson has stepped down as New Zealand’s Test captain after six years in charge. The Kiwi batter will be replaced by Tim Southee for the upcoming tour of Pakistan.

“Captaining the BLACKCAPS in Test cricket has been an incredibly special honour,” Williamson said. “For me, Test cricket is the pinnacle of the game, and I’ve enjoyed the challenges of leading the side in the format.

“Captaincy comes with an increased workload on and off the field, and at this stage of my career, I feel the time is right for this decision. After discussions with NZC, we felt that continuing to captain the white-ball formats was preferable with two World Cups in the next two years,” Williamson added.

After taking over from Brendon McCullum in 2016, Williamson led New Zealand in 40 Tests: winning 22, losing ten and drawing eight games. He averaged 57 and scored 11 hundred as captain, both of which are records for New Zealand. New Zealand enjoyed some of the best moments in Test cricket under the leadership of Williamson. They reached the top of the Test rankings in 2021 before beating India in the final of the inaugural ICC Test Championship in June of that year.

NZC CEO David White congratulated Williamson on the way he’s led the Test side. He said, “Kane is one of our all-time greats and our priority is to ensure he enjoys his cricket and plays for New Zealand for as long as possible.

BLACKCAPS coach Gary Stead said Williamson had been a fine Test captain.

“Kane’s guided the Test team through an immensely successful period which is a testament to his ability to bring people together and work towards a common goal,” he said. He further added, “We hope by lessening his workload, we can continue to see the best of Kane Williamson for longer on the international stage, and we know he will remain a key leader in this group.”

Williamson hands over the captaincy to Tim Southee, who will become New Zealand’s 31st Test captain when they play the first Test against Pakistan in Karachi. Tom Latham, another vital player in New Zealand, will act as a deputy to Southee.

Williamson will still lead the team in ODIs and T20s.
