Sri Lanka Recall Kumara, Include Mendis for Bangladesh ODIs

Sri Lanka’s ODI squad for their upcoming series against Bangladesh features the return of fast bowler Lahiru Kumara and the inclusion of batting allrounder Kamindu Mendis. The team aims to continue its rebuilding process after a disappointing World Cup performance.

Kumara, who has been in good form in domestic cricket, has been recalled to the ODI XI. He has taken nine wickets in his last four List A matches. Mendis, who impressed in the T20Is, has also earned a spot in the squad.

Opening batter Pathum Nissanka, who has recovered from a hamstring injury, and offspin-bowling allrounder Sahan Arachchige, who has been in good form with the bat domestically, are also included in the squad.

Test captain Dhananjaya de Silva remains omitted from the ODI squad, while Shevon Daniel, who was part of Sri Lanka’s last two ODI squads, has been left out in favor of Mendis.

Sri Lanka has a variety of seam options, including Kumara, Pramod Madushan, left-armer Dilshan Madushanka, and all-rounders Chamika Karunaratne and Janth Liyanage. However, they do not have the slingers Matheesha Pathirana or Nuwan Thushara, despite Thushara’s outstanding performance in the third T20I against Bangladesh.

On the spin front, Wanindu Hasaranga and Maheesh Theekshana are expected to be the main bowlers, but Akila Dananjaya and left-arm spinning allrounder Dunith Wellalage are also in the mix.

Sri Lanka has won both their ODI series this year, at home against Zimbabwe and Afghanistan. This is their first overseas series in 2024. The first of three ODIs will be played in Chattogram on Wednesday.

Rishabh Pant’s Triumphant Return to Cricket Ignites Excitement Across IPL Franchises

Star wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant’s long-awaited return to competitive cricket has sent ripples of excitement through the Indian Premier League (IPL) and beyond. After a 15-month hiatus following a life-threatening road accident, Pant is set to resume his role as captain of the Delhi Capitals.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed Pant’s fitness in a statement, stating that he has undergone an extensive 14-month rehabilitation and recovery process. The news was met with an outpouring of joy and anticipation from IPL teams, who took to social media to express their excitement.

Pant’s return is a significant boost for the Delhi Capitals, who missed his leadership and explosive batting last season. The 26-year-old has been a key figure for the franchise since his debut in 2016, and his presence will undoubtedly bolster their chances of success in the upcoming IPL season.

Beyond the IPL, Pant’s return also has implications for the Indian national team. The wicketkeeper-batsman is a vital cog in India’s T20 setup, and his availability could strengthen their chances at the upcoming T20 World Cup in the West Indies and United States.

Sri Lanka and Bangladesh Set for Fiery ODI Rivalry

Sri Lanka and Bangladesh Set for Fiery ODI Rivalry

Sri Lanka and Bangladesh are set to reignite their rivalry in a highly anticipated one-day international (ODI) series, with both teams eager to prove their dominance in the 50-over format. The series kicks off on Wednesday in Chittagong, and the atmosphere is already electric.

The current tour has been marked by a simmering rivalry between the two sides, stemming from the controversial timed-out dismissal of Sri Lankan batsman Angelo Mathews during their World Cup clash last year. Mathews became the first player in international cricket history to be dismissed in this manner, and the incident has continued to cast a shadow over the relationship between the teams.

Sri Lanka reignited the controversy after winning the Twenty20 series on Saturday, prompting Bangladesh to accuse their opponents of dwelling on the past. However, Sri Lanka coach Chris Silverwood insists that the rivalry is healthy and will only add to the intensity of the upcoming ODI series.

“The rivalry is obviously great. I think we need good competition,” Silverwood said. “We’re going to play some competitive cricket. I expect exactly the same again… And obviously both teams will be looking for the same, I should imagine.”

Bangladesh has traditionally been a formidable force in ODI cricket, boasting an impressive home record. However, they have suffered a dip in form in recent times, losing to both England and Afghanistan in 2023. Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto is confident that his team can bounce back against Sri Lanka.

“We played very good cricket from 2015 to 2022. So it can be a bad year. But it’s important to bounce back as a team and come back well this year,” Shanto said.

The second and third matches of the series will be held on March 15 and 18, and both teams will be determined to secure victory. The series promises to be a thrilling contest between two evenly matched sides, with the added spice of the ongoing rivalry between them.

Shreyas Iyer's Ranji Trophy Heroics Reignite Comeback Hopes

Shreyas Iyer’s Ranji Trophy Heroics Reignite Comeback Hopes

Shreyas Iyer’s impressive performance in the Ranji Trophy final against Vidarbha has reignited hopes of a strong comeback for the talented batter. Despite recent setbacks, including his omission from the BCCI’s central contracts list and a disappointing Ranji Trophy campaign for Mumbai, Iyer showcased his resilience and determination on Tuesday.

With Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma in attendance, Iyer played a crucial role in Mumbai’s innings, scoring a gritty 95 off 111 balls. His celebration, which went viral on social media, reflected his relief and satisfaction at finding form at a critical juncture.

Iyer’s performance has prompted Indian cricket team head coach Rahul Dravid to address the issue of his and Ishan Kishan’s absence from the central contracts. Dravid emphasized that both players remain in contention for selection, stating, “They are always in the mix. Everyone who is playing cricket and domestic cricket is in the mix.”

Dravid clarified that the decision-making process for central contracts lies with the BCCI and selectors, not the coaching staff. He added, “I don’t even know what the criteria is. People ask my opinion on the 15, me and Rohit pick the XI. We never discuss whether a player has a contract or not, whether he is going to be picked.”

Dravid’s comments suggest that Iyer and Kishan’s omission from the central contracts does not necessarily reflect their current form or potential. He urged them to regain fitness, perform consistently, and force the selectors to reconsider their decisions.

Iyer’s performance in the Ranji Trophy final is a testament to his ability to bounce back from adversity. With the Indian Premier League (IPL) season approaching, he will have another opportunity to showcase his skills and prove his worth to the national selectors.

Kolkata Knight Riders Sign Phil Salt as Jason Roy’s Replacement for IPL 2024

With just weeks to go before the start of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have announced the signing of Phil Salt as a replacement for Jason Roy. The move comes after Roy withdrew from the tournament at the last moment due to personal reasons.

Roy, who was acquired by KKR for INR 1.50 crore in the IPL 2024 auction, explained his decision in a statement, stating that he needed to spend time with his family before embarking on another busy year of cricket.

“After much consideration, I have made the tough decision to miss this year’s IPL. Having been away since the start of January, I need to get back to my family and have a refresh before a very busy year ahead. I will be supporting my friends and teammates at KKR throughout the tournament and wish them the best of luck,” Roy said.

In response to Roy’s withdrawal, KKR swiftly moved to secure the services of Phil Salt, who had gone unsold in the IPL 2024 auction. Salt, an aggressive wicket-keeper batter from England, will be making his second appearance in the IPL after representing the Delhi Capitals last year.

Salt’s impressive performances in recent months, including two consecutive T20I centuries against the West Indies in December 2023, caught the attention of KKR management. His 48-ball century in the fourth T20I at Trinidad is also the joint-fastest for England.

KKR’s decision to sign Salt is a strategic move that aims to bolster their batting lineup. The English batter is known for his explosive hitting and ability to score runs quickly, which will be a valuable asset to the team.

With the addition of Salt, KKR now have a well-rounded squad that includes a mix of experienced players and exciting young talent. The team will be hoping to make a strong impact in the upcoming IPL season and challenge for the title.

Musheer Khan Surpasses Tendulkar's Record in Ranji Trophy Final

Musheer Khan Surpasses Tendulkar’s Record in Ranji Trophy Final

Mumbai’s Musheer Khan has etched his name in the annals of Indian cricket history by surpassing a record previously held by the legendary Sachin Tendulkar during the ongoing Ranji Trophy final against Vidarbha at the iconic Wankhede Stadium.

The 19-year-old, younger brother of India cricketer Sarfaraz Khan, showcased exceptional skill and composure as he scored a century in Mumbai’s second innings of the title clash. In achieving this milestone, Musheer became the youngest batsman from his team to achieve such a feat in a Ranji final, eclipsing Tendulkar’s previous record set at the age of 21.

Tendulkar’s iconic 140 against Punjab in the 1994-95 Ranji Trophy final had remained a benchmark for nearly three decades until Musheer’s historic knock. Notably, both instances occurred at the hallowed grounds of the Wankhede Stadium, adding to the significance of Musheer’s achievement.

Facing the formidable Vidarbha attack, Musheer exhibited maturity beyond his years, patiently accumulating runs before reaching the coveted three-figure mark after negotiating 255 deliveries. The presence of Tendulkar himself at the venue to witness the proceedings of Day 3 added a surreal dimension to Musheer’s accomplishment.

Prior to his heroics in the Ranji final, Musheer had already made waves on the cricketing scene by representing India at the ICC U-19 World Cup earlier in the year. His stellar performance, amassing 360 runs in the tournament, underscored his potential as one of the brightest talents in Indian cricket.

Moreover, Musheer had demonstrated his prowess with the bat during the Ranji Trophy quarter-final clash against Baroda, where he notched up his maiden First-Class century, later converting it into a double-ton with a remarkable 203 off 357 balls.

With his elder brother Sarfaraz Khan also making headlines with his exploits in the Test arena, the Khan brothers have become a talking point in Indian cricket circles. Musheer’s meteoric rise, coupled with Sarfaraz’s success, exemplifies Mumbai’s rich cricketing legacy.

As Mumbai set their sights on clinching a record-extending 42nd Ranji Trophy title, Musheer Khan’s monumental achievement serves as a testament to the city’s cricketing prowess and the promising future of Indian cricket.

CSK CEO Reveals Succession Plan, Dhoni to Lead in IPL 2024

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) is actively planning for the future, including the succession plan for the captaincy post MS Dhoni’s tenure. While Dhoni will continue to lead CSK in IPL 2024, CEO Kasi Viswanathan has revealed that the franchise is leaving the decision of captaincy appointments to the coach and captain.

Viswanathan emphasized that owner N Srinivasan has made it clear that the captain and coach will have the autonomy to make decisions regarding leadership. This approach was evident when CSK entrusted Ravindra Jadeja with the captaincy at the beginning of IPL 2022, only for Dhoni to reclaim the role after a string of poor results.

Despite ongoing talks about Dhoni’s future in the T20 tournament, the former Indian captain has dismissed retirement rumors and committed to playing for CSK for at least another season. Having recovered from a knee injury, Dhoni has been actively involved in leading CSK’s training sessions ahead of the new IPL season.

Viswanathan outlined that discussions about leadership succession are ongoing internally but emphasized Srinivasan’s directive to let the captain and coach determine the course of action regarding captaincy appointments. He recalled that CSK had entrusted Ravindra Jadeja with the captaincy at the beginning of IPL 2022, only for Dhoni to reclaim the role after a string of poor results.

Reflecting on CSK’s objectives for IPL 2024, Viswanathan reiterated the franchise’s focus on qualifying for the knockouts, a testament to their consistent performance over the years. “Before every season, MS Dhoni tells us ‘first let us concentrate on league games. We will look to qualify for the knockouts’,” added Viswanathan, highlighting Dhoni’s approach to the upcoming season.

As CSK gear up for the new season, all eyes will be on their performance on the field and the evolving leadership dynamics within the team, with Dhoni’s guidance playing a pivotal role in shaping the franchise’s campaign aspirations.

Virat Kohli Faces Potential Exclusion from India's T20 World Cup Squad

Virat Kohli Faces Potential Exclusion from India’s T20 World Cup Squad

With the Men’s T20 World Cup fast approaching, the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season will serve as a crucial platform for teams worldwide to finalize their squads. However, for Team India, a bombshell report suggests that the BCCI selectors are contemplating the bold move of excluding Virat Kohli from the squad for the prestigious tournament.

The T20 World Cup, co-hosted by the West Indies and the USA, will take place from June 2 to 29. Rohit Sharma will lead the Indian team, as confirmed by BCCI secretary Jay Shah. However, Kohli’s inclusion remains uncertain, according to a report in ‘The Telegraph’.

India’s inability to secure an ICC trophy since the 2013 Champions Trophy has prompted the selectors to consider drastic measures, including the potential omission of former captain Kohli. The report indicates that the selectors have concerns about Kohli’s recent performances in the T20 format.

However, Kohli’s performance in the upcoming IPL season could influence the selectors’ decision. The batting icon recently took a break from the five-Test series against England to welcome the arrival of his second child.

The report quotes a source stating that “it remains a very delicate matter and not many (in the BCCI) are willing to get involved,” leaving the final decision to the board’s selection committee led by former India pacer Ajit Agarkar.

Agarkar has reportedly had discussions with Kohli, emphasizing the need for him to adapt his game to meet the demands of the team and the T20 format.
