Taylor Fritz Signs Apparel Deal with Hugo Boss

Taylor Fritz, the world’s 12th-ranked tennis player, has signed a new apparel sponsorship deal with Hugo Boss. The deal will see Fritz wear Hugo Boss apparel on and off the court, including at all official events, red-carpet moments, and interviews.

Fritz, who previously wore Nike apparel, said he is excited to join the Hugo Boss family. “In both my tennis career and my personal life, I strive to deliver 110%, embrace new challenges, and stay true to myself–so I’m inspired by the brand’s values of living a self-determined life and ‘being your own BOSS,’” Fritz said in a statement.

Hugo Boss CEO Daniel Grieder said that Fritz “perfectly embodies” the brand’s values and hailed him as a “great personality, on and off the court.” “With this collaboration, we are further expanding our commitment in tennis and strengthening the 24/7 lifestyle approach of BOSS,” Grieder added.

Fritz is seeded 12th in the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, California, and will debut his new Hugo Boss look in the second round against either Pavel Kotov or Alejandro Tabilo.

Fritz joins Matteo Berrettini, who’s worn Hugo Boss since 2022, as high-profile clients on the ATP tour. The brand also recently announced its foray into women’s tennis apparel by signing rising young Germans Noma Noha Akugue, 20, and Ella Seidel, 19.

Visa Issues Threaten Toronto’s Hosting of Prestigious Chess Tournament

The 2024 Candidates Tournament, a prestigious chess event organized by the International Chess Federation (FIDE), is scheduled to take place in Toronto from April 3 to 23. However, the tournament’s location remains uncertain due to visa issues affecting several participants.

Five Indian players have received visa approvals for the tournament: Praggnanandhaa R, Vidit Santosh Gujrathi, and Gukesh D in the Open category, and Vaishali Rameshbabu and Koneru Humpy in the Women’s category. However, three players and an official from other countries are still awaiting their visas.

Vladimir Drkulec, president of the Chess Federation of Canada, confirmed that all Indian participants have received their visas and will be able to participate in the tournament. However, he emphasized that the tournament will be moved to Spain if all players from other countries do not receive their visas by Friday.

“We are down to ten visas still needing approval. There are no Indians on that list,” Drkulec said. “But it won’t do any good if we don’t get all the players approved from other countries as the tournament will move to Spain.”

FIDE has issued an urgent appeal to Canada’s Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, Marc Miller, to resolve the visa issue. FIDE director general Emil Sutovsky has stated that the tournament will not be postponed or players replaced due to visa issues.

This will be the first time the Candidates Tournament, which has been held for nearly 70 years, will be held in North America. The tournament features 16 of the world’s top chess players, including Magnus Carlsen, the reigning World Champion.

Gavaskar, while acknowledging India’s impressive performance against England despite the absence of key players, emphasized the importance of team spirit and the contributions of young players.

“Three years back, India missed a lot of big names in Australia but they still managed to pull off a fantastic win not just in Gabba. After getting all out in Adelaide for 36, they won in Melbourne and drew in Sydney. They battled hard to save the Sydney Test match. If Rishabh Pant stayed on the crease for half an hour, then India could have won that match as well,” Gavaskar said.

“That’s why I always say, you don’t need big names… If any big name thinks that India won’t win without him, these two series have shown that whether you are there or not… Cricket is a team sport. It doesn’t depend on one individual.”

The success of the Indian team under captain Rohit Sharma and head coach Rahul Dravid has highlighted the importance of nurturing young talent and fostering a positive team environment.

“Credit must go to the way captain Rohit Sharma and head coach Rahul Dravid have managed the team. They gave chances to the young players, molded them, and encouraged them to play their natural game. This shows that whether we have big names or not, if we have players with big hearts, then we can win,” Gavaskar added.
