Top 5 overseas players who will excel at WPL

5 overseas players who will do great at the WPL

The Women’s Premier League’s inaugural season has begun on Saturday, March 4. Last month in Mumbai, the first-ever WPL Auction occurred, and Smriti Mandhana was the most expensive player, signing with Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) for ₹3.4 crores. Additionally, Ashleigh Gardner was chosen by Gujarat Giants (GG) for ₹3.2 crores.

Many of the players participating in the tournament recently took part in the Women’s T20 World Cup 2023, where Australia won their sixth title as they defeated hosts South Africa. England’s Natalie Sciver will be representing Mumbai Indians in WPL, who purchased her for ₹3.2 crores in a bidding war. Jemimah Rodrigues, who had a brilliant T20 World Cup, was acquired by Delhi Capitals (DC) for ₹2.2 crores.

The league stage of the Women’s Premier League will see all five franchises—MI, RCB, DC, GG, and UP Warriorz—play four home and four away matches. At the end of this phase, the top three teams will move on to the next round, with the first-placed team securing a direct spot in the final. Meanwhile, the third and fourth-placed sides will have to play an Eliminator match to determine who will qualify for the final.

Meg Lanning is currently the leader of the Australian T20 team and has led them to their sixth title. She is ranked fourth on the ICC T20I Batting Rankings and generally bats at No. 3, providing stability and aggression at the crease. With her ability to bat anywhere, she will be a key asset for the Delhi Capitals. Her experience as a five-time World Cup-winning captain should be invaluable during the Women’s Premier League

Ashleigh Gardner (Gujarat Giants)

Australian all-rounder Ashleigh Gardner is currently the No. 1 T20I all-rounder in the world and was one of the joint most expensive overseas players at the WPL auction. She recently earned the title of “Player of the Tournament” at the Women’s T20 World Cup, scoring 110 runs and taking ten wickets during the tournament. Her prowess as an aggressive middle-order batter and off-break bowler makes her a formidable force for the Gujarat Giants.

Ellyse Perry (Royal Challengers Bangalore)

Ellyse Perry is currently ranked No. 9 on the T20 all-Rounder Rankings and has been an essential part of the Australian team. She has scored 1535 T20I runs at a solid average and has taken 122 wickets. Her experience, wicket-taking ability, and formidable batting skills will be a major asset to the Royal Challengers Bangalore lineup.

Natalie Sciver-Brunt is an important addition to the top order of Mumbai Indians. She is currently ranked No. 10 as a T20 batter and No. 5 as a T20 all-rounder, making her the most expensive purchase for MI in the auction. With her exceptional batting skills and medium-pace bowling, she will be a formidable asset to the team.

Sophie Ecclestone is currently the No. 1 T20 bowler in the world and is renowned for her precise and economical slow left-arm spin. She was the highest wicket-taker at the Women’s T20 World Cup 2020, taking 11 wickets. As the most expensive overseas buy for the UP Warriorz, she will be a valuable addition to the team—not only for her bowling but also for her long-hitting abilities.

Indian Women Cricketer Richa Ghosh

Richa Ghosh: The new cricket sensation of Team India

Oh, My Ghosh! Will be the right way to describe the 19-year-old sensation of the Indian Women’s cricket team. After leading India to glory in the U-19 Women’s T20 World Cup, Richa Ghosh displayed a solid run of performances in the recently conducted Women’s T20 World Cup as well. Richa Ghosh is the only Indian to be included in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup team of the tournament. Richa Ghosh is slowly coming up as the new face of Indian cricket and is expected to reach major heights in the coming years. Let’s have a deeper look at Richa Ghosh and her journey in the sport of cricket.

Richa Ghosh: The new cricket sensation of Team India

Richa Ghosh is an Indian cricketer who has represented India at both the Under-19 and Women’s national teams. She hails from Bengal, where she made her first appearances in domestic cricket. Ghosh is a solid allrounder with an attacking batting style and an ability to move the ball both ways with her medium-paced bowling. Richa Ghosh’s cricketing journey began in 2011 when she participated in a talent hunt program in Bengal.

In 2011-12, Richa was given a chance to get involved in the talent hunt program set up by the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) under the project headed by its former secretary Biswarup Dey. She took advantage of the opportunity and attended a coaching camp at the Bengal Cricket Academy in Kalyani, thus beginning her journey.

“She was so small then I had to stay with her there and help out with her daily chores. Like other girls of her age, she was extremely fond of chocolates, cold drinks, and chips. We had to make her understand why she should get rid of such junk food. None could miss her talent even then.” said former international and national selector Mithu Mukherjee, who was in charge of the project in Bengal.

Impressed by Richa’s all-around abilities – including pace bowling, batting as an opener, and being a useful wicketkeeper – Chaitali Basak, one of the coaches, wanted her to join the Bengal state team immediately. However, Mukherjee chose to hold off on this due to her young age. Richa went on to make her debut for Bengal the following season and was picked for the Bengal Under-19 squad when she was only 12 years old.

“She often used to stay in my apartment in Calcutta during tournaments and camps. There were times they put up at cheap hotels near Sealdah and also the Salt Lake stadium campus. It was tough, but she and her father never gave up,” said Mithu Mukherjee. A year after her initial Bengal debut, Richa managed to make it into the U-23 and senior teams. In 2018, she was honored by the CAB with the Women’s Cricketer of the Year award. While Mukherjee and former Bengal cricketers-turned-coaches Shib Shankar Paul and Charanjit Singh provided technical aid at the CAB, Manabendrababu focused on Richa’s mental conditioning.

The turning point of Women’s cricket in India

In 2017, the Indian Women’s Cricket Team had a memorable run at the World Cup, making it to the final against England at Lord’s. In the process, they garnered a lot of attention and admiration, despite narrowly losing in the end. This successful journey at the 2017 World Cup helped Richa as well, who by now was a more polished cricketer and had decided to direct her focus on batting and wicketkeeping.

“Everyone got interested and started following women’s cricket on social media, something that didn’t happen before. We were able to create an expectation… We could set an example before the younger generation which mattered a lot,” recalled Indian legend Jhulan Goswami.

Richa made her T20I debut in the tri-series in Australia before the 2020 T20 World Cup. Notably, she became the only World Cup debutant to have five or more dismissals and broke the record for most catches in an ODI inning by an Indian female wicketkeeper against Pakistan in Mount Maunganui in 2022.

“There was no doubt about her talent. But none can claim credit for her journey to the top. Technically she was always very sound and, at times, better than her contemporaries like Shafali Verma. Her backfoot play can match the best in the business. Playing alongside Jhulan Goswami also helped her,” explained Mukherjee.

Richa gained a great deal from when Shib Paul assumed the position of Bengal coach in 2019. She was always eager to uncover new techniques and better her performance. Richa was allowed to train and play at higher levels, and she worked hard on her bowling and batting skills. Shib Paul’s guidance helped her hone her wicketkeeping and fielding capabilities. As a result, Richa developed into an all-rounder who could make a strong contribution to her team in every department. In 2020, she was also named in the Wisden India T20I team of the year.

“She yielded enormous power in her strokes. I used to have separate sessions with her and made her practice and play matches with the boys. I felt she would be more successful and switched her to No. 5 in the batting order,” said Paul. “At my academy at Baghajatin TarunSangha, she used to be at the nets practically the whole day. Playing matches with the boys helped her develop skills and induce more power into her strokes… She turned herself into a matchwinner on her own,” added Paul.

What does the future hold for the superstar?

During the recently conducted T20 World Cup in South Africa, Richa displayed remarkable consistency. The success she had achieved at the Under-19 World Cup gave her an extra boost of confidence. Her ability to snatch momentum away from the opposition through her strokeplay was evident in the match against West Indies.

“She is not the traditional Indian batter who likes to play the drives and stuff like that,” captain Harmanpreet Kaur said. “I think they are players who enjoy the short ball. She’s a superstar for India.” added the Indian skipper.

Having been selected by the Royal Challengers Bangalore for Rs 1.9 crore in the Women’s Premier League, Richa is looking forward to a new journey that will also provide some financial security. Before the Women’s Premier League auction, the official broadcaster aired a video of Richa Ghosh in which she discussed her desire to buy her family home in Kolkata and expressed her desire for her father to stop working. She was purchased by the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the auction a short while afterward for Rs 1.9 crore.

“I can’t describe my feelings with words. There are too many emotions inside my mind right now. That kid has suffered a lot, right from a very young age and I somehow feel responsible for it also,” Manabendra Ghosh told The Indian Express from Siliguri.

Manabendra still recalls how he used to make the 600 km journey from Siliguri to Kolkata on a train in search of cheaper hotels to save money so that his daughter could train.

“Money was an issue. I didn’t know anyone in Kolkata, so I used to look for cheaper hotels where we would stay. Our daily routine was to leave the hotel at 7 am and come back in the evening. The ground was our home in Kolkata,” said Ghosh. “We will not leave Siliguri, but now with the money, I would get her a flat in Kolkata so that she could stay there and practice,” he added.

“In 2013, I took out a loan to get her a bat before her U-19 trials. She couldn’t make it that year but a year later at the age of 12, she made her U-19 debut. From there on, she never looked back and played for the U-23 side the same season. A year later at the age of 13, she played for the senior Bengal team,” said Ghosh.

Richa expressed her gratitude to her parents for helping her succeed in the sport after being overwhelmed by the response she received during the tense auction session. “All my parents wanted me to achieve was to play for India. I want to captain my team and win a major trophy for India. I want to buy a flat in Kolkata. I want my mother and father to settle down there. I want them to enjoy their life now. They have struggled a lot in their life, and they have worked hard a lot for me. Even now, my father does umpire. After the auction, I hope he doesn’t have to work so hard,” Richa Ghosh said to Star Sports after the auction.

12 football transfers that were a flop

12 football transfers that were a disastrous flop

Football’s transfer window is an exciting time of the season. Players frequently switch teams and sometimes even join their club’s rivals, which gives the game greater variety. While some clubs lavishly spend money to chase success during the season, others flex their muscles in the transfer market to show off their wealth. In terms of money, records are broken in the transfer window very frequently.

Some players go on to become enormous successes, while others vanish into obscurity. Some individuals come in search of large sums of money but fall short of expectations. In light of that, let’s have a look at some of the worst transfers in the history of football.

12 football transfers that were a major flop

Philippe Coutinho: Liverpool – Barcelona (2018)

The worst transfer in Barcelona’s history but one of the most significant in Liverpool’s. Barcelona agreed to spend €120m (£100m/$130m) for a player that they genuinely didn’t need, plus €40m (£34m/$43m) in potential bonuses. Was he an offensive or defensive midfielder, or was he both? Even though Josep Maria Bartomeu had no idea, he made a special effort to sign the Brazilian.

His two goals against the Catalans in 2020 while on loan to Bayern Munich were his most noteworthy accomplishment throughout his four years at Barca. As they frantically tried to regain some financial stability at Camp Nou after very nearly going bankrupt under Bartomeu, they allowed Coutinho to join Aston Villa for just €20 million (£17 million/$21.5 million) in 2022. This was after years of unsuccessfully trying to sell Coutinho.

Eden Hazard: Chelsea – Real Madrid (2019)

Eden Hazard’s transfer to Real Madrid, which had been in the works for ten years, looked hopeless the moment the winger showed up overweight for preseason practice. To be fair to Hazard, he was incredibly unlucky with injuries, given that he was virtually injury-free throughout his tenure at Chelsea. But even when he’s been able to string together a few matches in Spain, he’s come off as a pretty shoddy replica of the guy who shone in the Premier League for several years.

Although Hazard has won numerous prestigious awards, including the Champions League, he contributed about as little to Real Madrid’s 2021–22 victory as Gareth Bale. Eden Hazard admitted that he expected more from his time at Real Madrid and regretted not being able to make an immediate impact. He also claimed that the transition from the Premier League to La Liga was more difficult than he anticipated.

Paul Pogba: Juventus – Manchester United (2016)

Paul Pogba was a pointless departure from Manchester United in 2012. In 2016, United re-signed Pogba from Juventus for a record-breaking £89.5 million. However, ten years later, it occurred once more. Most fans were overjoyed to see the departure of a player that they had lost hope in and believed was never going to consistently show his world-class quality.

Several incensed fans on the Stretford End yelled, “F*ck off, Pogba!” in addition to booing the France midfielder during the Premier League match against Norwich in April 2022. Still, it was painful to lose such a valuable asset for free. Pogba eventually made his way back from where he came after six seasons, one Europa League victory, one Carabao Cup triumph, a series of dreadful performances, and repellent come-and-get-me appeals to rival teams.

Romelu Lukaku: Inter Milan – Chelsea (2021)

Given that he had only managed to score once during his prior stay at Stamford Bridge, Lukaku said that his decision to return to Chelsea was motivated by “unfinished business.” Although the striker ended the 2021–22 season as the club’s top scorer, his second stint was significantly worse than his first. Considering the club-record investment of £97.5m ($119m) in his services, 15 goals from 44 appearances was a pitiful return.

Midway through the season, Lukaku gave an unapproved interview to Sky Sport Italia in which he expressed his undying love for his old team Inter and, even more incredibly, questioned Thomas Tuchel’s tactics. This was solely Lukaku’s fault. He never really recovered from betraying his manager and Chelsea’s fans, which made his loan back to San Siro inevitable.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic: Inter Milan – Barcelona (2009)

Zlatan Ibrahimovic is an absolute legend of the game, as he would be the first to tell you. But his transfer to Barcelona is one of the worst business decisions ever. Remember that in addition to paying Inter €69.5 million (£59 million/$75 million) for Ibrahimovic, Barcelona also gave up 2009 Champions League champion Samuel Eto’o, who later went on to help Inter Milan in winning the treble after knocking out Barca in the semifinals.

By that time, Pep Guardiola, the then-manager of Barcelona, and Zlatan had completely fallen out, with Ibrahimovic accusing the Catalan of having “no balls” and “sh*tting himself” in front of his old boss Jose Mourinho. The late Mino Raiola, the striker’s agent, called Guardiola a “coward” and even attacked him before the 2012 Champions League final. However, it’s crucial to remember that Ibrahimovic had a goal total of 21 throughout all competitions, but this is possibly the greatest personality clash in football history.

Antoine Griezmann: Atletico Madrid – Barcelona (2019)

In 2018, Antoine Griezmann sparked anger among Barcelona fans after teasing them with the possibility of a €100m transfer to Camp Nou, only to publicly reject it in a video documentary produced by Blaugrana defender Gerard Pique. The fans were indignant. They were through with the Atletico Madrid star.

However, Bartomeu strangely pursued Griezmann again the following year, willing to pay the Frenchman’s contract buy-out clause of €120 million (£100 million/$130 million), as if trying to make a point. In 2021, Antoine Griezmann returned to Madrid and rejoined Atletico on loan before making a permanent move back to Diego Simeone’s side. Despite being a talented attacker, his tenure at Camp Nou was brief and largely unsuccessful.

Joao Felix: Benfica – Atletico Madrid (2019)

Joao Felix said he had many offers during the summer of 2019, but he thought a move to Atletico Madrid would be beneficial for his future. He couldn’t have been more mistaken, as the forward utterly failed to earn back his €126 million (£113 million/$135 million) transfer cost. It’s still puzzling why Felix chose to play for Diego Simeone, who makes his attackers work just as hard as his midfielders and defenders, given that he said he merely wanted to “enjoy” football at the time.

This deal didn’t seem to fit from the beginning, and it turned out to be the case when Atletico agreed to let Felix join Chelsea on loan for the rest of the 2022–23 campaign. Joao Felix scored just 25 goals in 96 Liga games. He did, however, extend his contract with the Rojiblancos during the process, although it is clear that this was only done to try to reclaim part of the money they spent on their record signing after what they think will be a fruitful tenure at Chelsea.

Ousmane Dembele: Dortmund – Barcelona (2017)

Barcelona was in a bind after Neymar’s shocking transfer to Paris Saint-Germain back in the summer of 2017. Even though PSG paid a record-breaking sum for the Brazilian, every club in the world was aware of Barcelona’s financial bonanza and their pressing need for a replacement.

Barcelona made the ultimate panic purchase by paying an initial €105 million (£90 million/$112 million) for a player with just one successful Bundesliga season under his belt. Dortmund sensed Barca coming from a mile away and pressed hard on Ousmane Dembele until the Catalans buckled.

The quality of the France international is undeniable. He’s having a decent run of form right now. However, let’s face it: Dembele has utterly failed to live up to his price tag, spending the majority of his time at Camp Nou hampered by injury.

Harry Maguire: Leicester City – Man Utd (2019)

Harry Maguire displayed the potential to excel as a Premier League defender. At Leicester, he gave such proof. Even Pep Guardiola wished to sign the English defender in 2019. However, Maguire claimed he chose United instead, but the truth is that Manchester City resisted the offer because of the cost. City simply didn’t think Maguire was worth a defender’s world-record transfer cost, and their judgment was sound.

Manchester United legend: Harry Maguire lacks character | Manchester united legends, Manchester united, Premier league

According to Maguire, some of the vitriol he has endured from Manchester United supporters over the past three years has crossed “the line.” There is no disputing, though, that his trophy-less tenure at Old Trafford has been a painful letdown, and the choice to name him the club captain has long since come off as absolutely absurd.

In case you forgot, United spent £80 million ($100 million) on Maguire; the price they would receive today is hardly half that much. Although the England international is undoubtedly a tremendous financial waste, he may not be “sh*t,” as Rafael van der Vaar once claimed.

James Rodriguez: Monaco – Real Madrid (2014)

During Colombia’s 2014 World Cup run to the quarterfinals, Florentino Perez, the president of Real Madrid, fell in love with the young, skillful James Rodriguez, just like everyone else in the football world. James became Perez’s newest Galactico as the offensive midfielder with a knack for stunning goals had long fantasized about playing for Real Madrid.

Real Madrid in 'advanced talks' to sell James Rodriguez to Everton

He showed glimpses of a Galactico during his debut season in Spain, finishing the season with 17 goals across all competitions. Although the 2016 appointment of Zinedine Zidane as manager was a significant turning moment in Madrid’s contemporary history, it also effectively signaled the end of James’ Real Madrid tenure.

Under the Frenchman, who once asserted that James had requested to be benched from a match against Athletic Club, the Colombian saw little action on the field. The €80 million (£68 million/$86 million) signing ultimately left for nothing after spending two years on loan at Bayern Munich and having a terrible final season in which he only made eight appearances. This is the ideal example of how much his stock had dropped since winning the Golden Boot in Brazil.

Kepa Arrizabalaga: Athletico Madrid – Chelsea (2018)

The priciest goalie in the world but not even close to the greatest. Although the £72 million price tag may have finally helped him recapture his starting position from Edouard Mendy, it would not be unexpected to see Chelsea want to offload the Spaniard at the end of the year, especially following his most recent error.

Kepa Arrizabalaga Errors Will Continue to Hurt Chelsea

Creator: Pool | Credit: Getty Images Copyright: 2020 Pool

Of course, there might not be many takers. Kepa is unquestionably not a top goalie. He will undoubtedly always be linked to the Carabao Cup. First and foremost, for ignominiously refusing to be replaced in the 2019 championship game, and secondly, for failing to make a single save and then missing the go-ahead penalty kick after being substituted just for the shootout against Liverpool in the 2022 tournament decider.

Alvaro Morata: Real Madrid – Chelsea (2017)

Many experts believe that Alvaro Morata’s agency is the greatest in the industry. What other explanation is there for a striker who has constantly had trouble finding the back of the net earning lucrative transfers to Europe’s top clubs? Morata did score 15 goals in La Liga in 2016–17, which persuaded Chelsea to pay £60 million ($75 million) to acquire him from Real Madrid.

The Spain international’s unpleasant 18-month spell at Stamford Bridge was cut short in January 2019 when he was sent to join Atletico Madrid on loan with an eye toward a permanent transfer. He scored just 16 Premier League goals throughout that time. While in England, Morata believed that the media was too quick to blame him, but given the enormity of the outlay, it is tough to view his goal return as anything other than a disappointment.

Greatest performances of the Women's World Cup

The Greatest performances in Women’s World Cup

In 1973, seven teams competed in the inaugural edition of the Women’s ODI Cricket World Cup. England emerged triumphant, beating Australia to take the title for the first-ever ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup. The Women’s ODI Cricket World Cup is held every four years and has featured teams worldwide since its inception. In the most recent edition, held in 2017, England beat India to take the title for the third time in their history. The tournament has seen some of the best female cricketers in the world showcase their skills on the international stage.

Australia has been the dominant force in the Women’s ODI Cricket World Cup, having won seven titles since the inaugural edition in 1973. England has won the tournament four times and was most recently defeated by the Australians in the 2022 final. New Zealand’s victory at home in the 2000 edition is the only time the Australia-England duopoly has been broken. The Kiwis have been runners-up thrice (1993, 1997, and 2009).

The Indian Women’s Cricket Team has seen remarkable growth in recent years, with two runners-up positions at the ODI World Cup to their credit. Led by veteran players such as Mithali Raj, Jhulan Goswami, and Harmanpreet Kaur, the Women in Blue have continued to inspire with their performances on the field.

The new-age Indian players like Smrithi Mandhana, Jemimah Rodrigues, and Shafali Verma are taking Indian cricket to the next level. Team India gave a tough fight to the mighty Australians in the semi-finals of the 2023 T20 World Cup. However, an unlucky Harmanpreet Kaur’s run-out cost India a place in the finals. Players like Jemihad Rodrigues and Harmanpreet Kaur played rock-solid knocks in the decisive clash.

Let’s have a look at the Greatest performances of the Women’s World Cup

Belinda Clark 229 Runs vs Denmark (1997 Women’s World Cup)

Belinda Clark

Belinda Clark is a popular name in women’s cricket, having represented Australia in four World Cups and leading the team in three of them. She holds the record for the first (and only) double century in the Women’s World Cup to date and the first of the only two double centuries seen in Women’s ODI games.

Belinda Clark achieved her historic double century in the 1997 World Cup, scoring an unbeaten 229 off just 155 balls in an inning that featured 22 boundaries and a strike rate of 147.74. Her performance helped Australia set their highest-ever ODI total and secure a 363-run victory against Denmark.

The match between Australia and Denmark in the 1997 Women’s World Cup was one-sided, as Belinda Clark’s double century helped Australia set their highest-ever ODI total of 412 runs. Clark’s remarkable innings had 22 boundaries and a strike rate of 147.74.

Belinda Clark, while talking about her double century, said, “It was a special inning for me, and it stands out as one of my best performances in international cricket. I am proud that I was able to help Australia set their highest-ever ODI total and record an impressive win.”

Harmanpreet Kaur delivered a remarkable performance in the semi-final of the One Day International World Cup against Australia, scoring 171 runs off 115 balls. She hit 20 fours and seven sixes in her innings, giving India a major boost to make it to the finals for the second time. India made it to the final of the Women’s ODI World Cup for the second time after Harmanpreet Kaur’s heroics in the semi-final.

Unfortunately, they lost to England in the final, denying them their first-ever World Cup title. Nevertheless, the team’s performance in the World Cup has been a source of pride for the nation and has inspired many young female cricketers to strive for excellence.

Harmanpreet Kaur acknowledged her heroics against Australia and said, “I just wanted to go out there and play my natural game. I was disappointed that we didn’t win the final, but it was a great experience for the whole team to be in a World Cup final, and I’m proud of how we played.”

This inning occurred on March 23, 2014, in Sylhet, Bangladesh, during the 2014 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup. This was a Group B match between Australia and Ireland.

In reply, Ireland’s Women could never get going, and their innings ended at 113/7 in 20 overs. Australia skipper Meg Lanning was named Player of the Match for her brilliant knock.

After the match, Meg Lanning said: “It was a good day. I am thrilled to have been able to contribute to the team with a hundred. It was a great team effort, and I am very pleased to have gotten the job done.” She also added, “It was a great feeling. In 2017, Sri Lanka’s Chamari Athapaththu scored 178* runs off 143 balls with 22 fours and six sixes against Australia in the Women’s World Cup, leading to the highest individual score of the tournament. Athapaththu’s incredible performance was even more impressive in light of Australian captain Meg Lanning’s own brilliant 152 not-out, which helped Australia secure an easy 8-wicket victory with 37 balls to spare. Despite her team’s loss, Athapaththu was awarded player of the match and cemented her place in the record books.

Athapaththu’s 178 runs set a new Sri Lankan record for the highest individual score at the Women’s World Cup and was the third-highest unbeaten score in the tournament after Ellyse Perry’s 213. It was also her highest individual T20I score, surpassing her previous record of 76.

Athapaththu described her record-breaking innings as an “unforgettable experience” and said it was “a great honor” to contribute to her team’s success. Danni Wyatt was in remarkable form during her match against India, having shared a 61-run opening stand (in 5.2 overs) with Bryony Smith and then a 96-run partnership with Tammy Beaumont on the second wicket. Ranking all the teams from the Women’s Premier League

We witnessed how many Women’s cricketers garnered significant sums from teams during the recently concluded Women’s Premier League (WPL) auction as a result of their spotless records and dazzling numbers. A few celebrities who made news after becoming some of the most expensive purchases at the event were Smriti Mandhana, Nat Sciver-Brunt, Ashleigh Gardner, Deepti Sharma, and Shafali Verma. Their input will be essential in determining the success of their respective franchises in the forthcoming competition.

In the historic first Women’s Premier League (WPL) auction on February 13, INR 59.50 crore was spent on 87 players, 30 of whom are international stars. The performances of the international players will undoubtedly play a significant role in determining the fate of the teams come March. Only 87 of the 449 players featured in the WPL 2023 auction could secure contracts. Some well-known performers from the global stage went unsold from the auction’s focus from either of the franchises.

The first season of Women’s Premier League is set to begin on 4th March, and the finals of the tournament will be played on 26th March. Before the tournament proceeds, let’s have a look at the best teams in the grand Indian tournament.

Ranking all the teams from the Women’s Premier League

Royal Challengers Bangalore

RCB bought a total of 18 players for a sum of 11.9 crores. RCB enjoys constructing its brand around famous players. Imagine the men’s team as having Chris Gayle, AB de Villiers, and Virat Kohli. Similar to the Women’s Premier League(WPL), they have set up a formidable trio consisting of Smriti Mandhana, Ellyse Perry, a four-time winner of the T20 World Cup, and Dane van Niekerk of South Africa.

Apart from some of the renowned Indian superstars, RCB has managed to gather a talented bunch of international all-rounders. The team’s coach and management have the difficult task of deciding which cricketers to leave out of their far-reaching and talented squad, featuring renowned players such as Perry, Sophie Devine, van Niekerk, and Heather Knight, who all possess both batting and bowling capabilities.

Mandhana, Richa Ghosh, and Renuka Singh add even more firepower to the already impressive overseas contingent of top-class cricketers. This set of players automatically makes RCB one of the top favorites to win the Indian T20 League. However, the lack of a quality Indian wrist-spinner on the bouncy Mumbai pitches might be a drawback.

Captain of Royal Challengers Bangalore for WPL: Smriti Mandhana

RCB’s complete squad for 2023:

Smriti Mandhana (INR 3.4 crore), Sophie Devine (INR 50 lakh), Ellyse Perry (INR 1.7 crore), Renuka Singh (INR 1.5 crore), Richa Ghosh (INR 1.9 crore), Erin Burns (INR 30 lakh), Disha Kasat (INR 10 lakh), Indrani Roy (INR 10 lakh), Shreyanka Patil (INR 10 lakh), Kanika Ahuja (35 lacks), Asha Shobana (INR 10 lakh), Heather Knight (INR 40 lakh), Dane van Niekerk (INR 30 lakh), Preeti Bose (INR 30 lakh), Poonam Khemnar (INR 10 lakh), Komal Zanzad (INR 25 lakh), Megan Schutt (INR 40 lakh), Sahana Pawar (INR 10 lakh).

Overall Rating: (4.3/5)

Mumbai Indians

MI purchased a total of 18 players for a sum of 12 crores. A chance to play for the MI-based franchise will be especially poignant for Harmanpreet Kaur, who made her debut on the Mumbai pitches in 2013 with a memorable century in the Women’s World Cup. This return to the city will mark the start of an exciting new phase of Indian women’s cricket, during which Harmanpreet could potentially lead the Mumbai Indians. Harmanpreet Kaur, Nat Sciver-Brunt, and Pooja Vastrakar are sure to appear at the top of the team’s lineup. Both Sciver-Brunt and Vastrakar are essential cogs because of their mobility in the field against speed and spin, as well as their superb medium pace and ability to bowl a heavy ball in the middle overs.

Mumbai Indians have gone the extra mile in gathering a large selection of reserve players thanks to their dedicated scouting system. Additionally, they have also developed a robust pool of India Under-19 players and will use this time to help them grow and develop over the years. Mumbai Indians are known for creating superstars like the franchise previously did with Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah. With Yastika Bhatia as the sole wicketkeeper, Mumbai Indians lack backup options in that area. They could also use more Indian seam bowlers, as Vastrakar is their only option in this regard.

Captain of Mumbai Indians for WPL: Harmanpreet Kaur

MI’s complete squad for 2023:

Harmanpreet Kaur (INR 1.8 crore), Nat Sciver (INR 3.2 crore), Amelia Kerr (INR 1 crore), Pooja Vastrakar (INR 1.9 crore), Yastika Bhatia (INR 1.5 crore), Heather Graham (INR 30 lakh), Isabelle Wong (INR 30 lakh), Amanjot Kaur (INR 50 lakh), Dhara Gujar (INR 10 lakh), Saika Ishaque (INR 10 lakh), Hayley Matthews (INR 40 lakh), Chloe Tryon (INR 30 lakh), Humairaa Khazi (INR 10 lakh), Priyanka Bala (INR 20 lakh), Sonam Yadav (INR 10 lakh), Jintimani Kalita (INR 10 lakh), Neelam Bisht (INR 10 lakh).

Overall Rating: (4/5)

Delhi Capitals

Delhi Capitals bought a total of 18 players for a sum of 11.65 crores. Jemimah Rodrigues, Shafali Verma, and Marizanne Kapp’s performance and expertise will be important for the Capitals in their first competitive venture. The Capitals’ top order is composed of Shafali, Rodrigues, and Lanning. Australia’s World Cup-winning captain Meg Lanning makes the team look invincible on paper.

Delhi Capitals have a strong bowling troupe consisting of Poonam Yadav, Jess Jonassen, Radha Yadav, Shikha Pandey, Arundhati Reddy, and Marizanne Kapp. With Taniya Bhatia and Aparna Mondal as wicketkeepers, however, the lower-middle order might be hindered due to their lack of striking ability.

Captain of Delhi Capitals for WPL: Not yet announced

DC’s complete squad for 2023:

Jemimah Rodrigues (INR 2.2 crore), Meg Lanning (INR 1.1 crore), Shafali Verma (INR 2 crore), Radha Yadav (INR 40 lakh), Shikha Pandey (INR 60 lakh), Marizanne Kapp (INR 1.5 crore), Titas Sadhu (INR 25 lakh), Alice Capsey (INR 75 lakh), Tara Norris (INR 10 lakh), Laura Harris (INR 45 lakh), Jasia Akhter (INR 20 lakh), Minnu Mani (INR 30 lakh), Jess Jonassen (INR 50 lakh), Taniyaa Bhatia (INR 30 lakh), Poonam Yadav (INR 30 lakh), Sneha Deepthi (INR 30 lakh), Arundhati Reddy (INR 30 lakh), Aparna Mondal (INR 10 lakh).

Overall Rating: (4/5)

Gujarat Giants

GG amassed a total of 18 players for a sum of 11.5 crores. Gujarat Giants made Australia’s Ashleigh Gardner one of the most expensive overseas purchases in the auction at INR 3.2 crore (USD 390,000 approx). Ashleigh Gardner recently achieved her best-ever bowling figures in T20Is. Gardner mentioned that the conditions at DY Patil Stadium and the Brabourne Stadium are perfect for good strokeplay, which will benefit her as a hitter and also help the ball grip and turn. Her performance with both bat and ball is expected to make a significant impact.

With her abundance of experience in the domestic circuit, Sneh Rana could be a huge asset for Mumbai Indians during the Women’s Premier League. Additionally, she will be reuniting with Nooshin Al Khadeer, her former Railways coach, who has had a major impact on Rana’s return to the national side. Her flight and dip with the ball could be strategic tools for the two venues hosting all 22 games.

Gujarat Giants have some of the most specialized overseas options available to them, in addition to reliable all-rounders Deandra Dottin and Annabel Sutherland, who both specialize in seam bowling. Gujarat Giants are lacking a bit in the local Indian experience department, with Harleen Deol, S Meghana, and D Hemalatha being their only Indian batters who can be trusted in critical moments or if any unexpected injuries arise.

Captain of Gujarat Giants for WPL: Not yet announced

GG’s complete squad for 2023:

Ashleigh Gardner (Rs 3.2 crore), Beth Mooney (Rs 2.2 crore), Sophia Dunkley (INR 60 lakh), Annabel Sutherland (INR 70 lakh), Harleen Deol (INR 40 lakh), Deandra Dottin (INR 60 lakh), Sneh Rana (INR 75 lakh), Sabbineni Meghana (INR 30 lakh), Georgia Wareham (INR 75 lakh), Mansi Joshi (INR 30 lakh), Dayalan Hemalatha (INR 30 lakh), Monica Patel (INR 30 lakh), Tanuja Kanwer (INR 50 lakh), Sushma Verma (INR 60 lakh), Hurley Gala (INR 10 lakh), Parunika Sisodia (INR 10 lakh), Shabnam Shakeel (INR 10 lakh), Ashwani Kumari (INR 35 lakh).

Overall Rating: (3.5/5)

UP Warriorz (3.4/5)

UP Warriorz bought a total of 18 players for a sum of 11.5 crores. UP Warriorz has an extremely well-rounded squad. Along with Deepti, Devika Vaidya, Parshavi Chopra, Grace Harris, and Tahlia McGrath, who can all provide an impact with both the bat and ball, the team has the potential to shift momentum and take the game in their favor.

Deepti Sharma is a key player in the line-up, especially in spin-friendly pitch conditions in Mumbai. Sharma was India’s second-most expensive player in the WPL 2023 auction with an INR 2.6 crore price tag, behind Smriti Mandhana. Sharma’s ability to produce results with both batting and bowling makes her a vital part of the team. Alyssa Healy is an essential part of the Warriorz top lineup and team, offering plenty of international experience. She has a remarkable ability to turn the tides in her team’s favor, with an impressive batting average of 128.26 in T20Is.

Warriorz has an excellent core spin trio with Rajeshwari Gayakwad, Sophie Ecclestone, and Deepti at the helm. With Shabnim Ismail and Anjali Sarvani providing quality support in the pace department, Healy, the Under-19 India opener Shweta Sehrawat, and McGrath form a solid top order. Having said that, Kiran Navgire and the lesser-known Laxmi Yadav are the only dedicated batters in the middle order; Warriorz needs players who can take on an anchor role if a few quick wickets fall early in innings.

Captain of UP Warriorz for WPL: Alyssa Healy

UP Warriorz complete squad for 2023:

Sophie Ecclestone (INR 1.8 crore), Deepti Sharma (INR 2.6 crore), Tahlia McGrath (INR 1.4 crore), Shabnim Ismail (INR 1 crore), Alyssa Healy (INR 70 lakh), Anjali Sarvani (INR 55 lakh), Rajeshwari Gayakwad (INR 40 lakh), Parshavi Chopra (INR 10 lakh), Shweta Sehrawat (INR 40 lakh), S Yashasri (INR 10 lakh), Kiran Navgire (INR 30 lakh), Grace Harris (INR 75 lakh), Devika Vaidya (INR 1.4 crore), Lauren Bell (INR 30 lakh), Laxmi Yadav (INR 10 lakh), Simran Shaikh (INR 10 lakh).

After Australia and England, India is the favourite to lift the trophy.

With the tournament moving towards its knockout stage, we take a look at some of the unforgettable moments from the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup.

Ellyse Perry’s right foot wins Australia the 2010 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup final

The 2010 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup final saw one of the most thrilling grand finales of a cricket tournament. The Invincible Australian side faced the New Zealanders at Barbados’ Kensington Oval.

Batting first, Australia had a disastrous start, with half the side dismissed for just 50 runs. However, some gritty batting from their lower order helped the team manage 106 runs in their full quota of 20 overs.

Now, defending such a small total would be a monumental task. But the Aussies were up for the task. With some intelligent bowling and excellent fielding, the Australians kept taking regular wickets and kept the run rate in check.

With 14 runs needed off the final over, the Australian skipper Alex Blackwell backed Ellyse Perry to bowl the final over. The first four deliveries went for seven runs leaving the equation as seven additional runs needed in the final two deliveries. The fifth ball went for another two runs, with the New Zealanders needing five runs off the last ball.

Powerful New Zealand batter Sophie Devine was on strike for the last ball and was looking to find a boundary to level the scores. However, Ellyse Perry had other plans. Perry bowled a yorker which Devine hit straight. Perry showed her presence of mind by using her boot to stop the ball and win the inaugural Women’s T20 World Cup trophy for her team.

Windies Women’s title-clinching victory against Australia in 2016

The year 2016 was memorable for the West Indies. The Caribbean teams managed to win multiple prestigious tournaments. After clinching the under-19 World Cup in Bangladesh, the women’s team went one step ahead and won the Senior Women’s T20 World Cup.

The final, being played at Eden Gardens, saw two powerhouses of cricket go against each other. Batting first, the Australians made 148/5 with half-centuries from Elyse Villani and Meg Lanning.

Although not a huge target, the Australians felt it was a competitive total. The chase began, and Windies women thrashed every plan made by the Australian team. The openers, Hayley Matthews and Stafanie Taylor, put on a show for the Kolkata audience with an opening partnership of 120 runs in just 15 overs. Needing just 28 runs in the last five overs, the Windies lost both their well-settled batters, and it was left to their new batters to take the team home.

With 13 runs needed from the last two overs, Deandra Dottin and Britney Cooper managed to keep calm and win their team’s first ICC trophy.

P.S. Also, on that day, the men’s team defeated England to defend their ICC T20 World Cup trophy.

England skipper Heather Knight showed her class at the 2020 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup. During their group-stage match against Thailand, the cricketer scored an unbeaten 108* from just 66 deliveries, and her efforts ensured England cruised home to victory at Manuka Oval in Canberra. The batter had 13 boundaries, and four strikes crossed the boundary line.

With the century, the batter became the first woman to smash a ton in all three formats.

Harmanpreet Kaur’s blistering ton at the 2018 T20 World Cup vs New Zealand

Current Team India skipper Harmanpreet Kaur lit up the opening game of the 2018 T20 World Cup. The right-handed batter smashed 103 runs off 51 balls with eight maximums and seven boundaries.

Harmanpreet Kaur’s swashbuckling innings helped the team post 194/5 in the first innings. In the second innings, the Indian bowlers bowled intelligently to restrict the opposition to 160/9 in their full quota of 20 overs.

Harmanpreet Kaur’s stroke-filled innings was the highlight of India’s innings. Incidentally, it was the first century by an Indian woman in T20Is.

Relive the historic ton by the Indian batter.

Poonam Yadav spins her magic to take India to victory against Australia

Team India’s magician leg-spinner Poonam Yadav spun her web to dismantle the Australian batting order. After scraping together what looked like a below-par total of 132, the leg spin of Poonam Yadav caused chaos at the Showground Stadium.

The wrist-spinner took four wickets for 19 runs and won the game single-handedly for the Women in Blue.

Those were some of the unforgettable moments from the Women’s T20 World Cup. Which one among the lot is the favourite?

The 15 Strangest Prizes given in Sports

The 15 Strangest Prizes given in Sports

Every sport is played for the reward, be it a golden trophy or a mixer-grinder; the prizes are a must. There are many strangest prizes that have been given out in sports. Some examples include “A full crate of beer” awarded to the man of the match of The Zimbabwean Premier League, a gigantic credit card, and even a live chicken. Some of these odd awards, whether they serve as an acknowledgment for a Man of the Match performance, Player of the Month consistency, or any other honor that recognizes excellent form, actually left us perplexed. Let’s have a look at some of those.

Top 15 Strangest Prizes given in Sports

A chicken

This Man of the Match award from Malawi was more of a local fan’s gesture of appreciation than a full-fledged trophy. Despite this, there is no denying how bizarre it is on its whole. Supporters of Nyassa Big Bullets are accustomed to rewarding their players to encourage them. Hassan Kajoke, a striker of the team, was handed a live chicken in July 2019 after leading the team to a 5-0 victory.

A jeweled dagger

Golf’s Trophée Hassan II in Morocco chooses a jeweled ceremonial dagger over a jacket or cardigan, which are prizes at the Masters and Arnold Palmer Invitational, respectively. Welshman Rhys Davis won it in 2010, but in order to get the weapon on the plane for his return voyage home, he needed a special letter of permission from the Moroccan Royal Family.

Blender

When Luke Wright was given a blender as the Man of the Match prize for his performance in the Dhaka Premier League. The cricketer for England’s post at the time had gone viral. “Pleased we won my first match for Abhanai today. Have to say I have never been given a blender for MoM before,” he tweeted.

A full crate of beer

Champagne may no longer be awarded a Man of the Match trophy in the Premier League, but other nations continue to award alcohol—and in considerable quantities, too. A whole crate of beer has occasionally been given as a reward for Man of the Match performances in the Zimbabwean Premier League, which is sponsored by Castle Lager. Not exactly the best award for a professional athlete.

A cow

Winners of alpine ski competitions frequently receive animals, but this is primarily symbolic. Up until a live calf or $5,000 offer was made to Lindsey Vonn in France’s Val d’Isère. As you would have anticipated, Vonn took the calf, much to the chagrin of the organizer. The cow was valued at $20,000, so Vonn’s decision to buy it was more than savvy.

Bat grip and shoelaces

In the opening ODI of India’s tour to Australia in 2018–19, the speedster bowled superbly. Jhye Richardson took four wickets and only conceded 26 runs. His bowling performance was immensely helpful for the Australians as they won the opening game of the three-match ODI series. Funny enough, the fast bowler received the Man of the Match award during the presentation ceremony in the form of shoelaces and a bat grip.

The India-Australia series is one of the most valuable in sports, as it is widely recognized. The trophies handed out during the series drew criticism from several former cricket players. The Indian team ultimately won the series. However, they were only granted $500, and the organizers received a lot of criticism for this.

A rice cooker

Eoin Morgan played many match-winning performances during his time in the Dhaka Premier League. The southpaw received many Player of the Match awards for his efforts. However, one such prize turned out to be a rice cooker. Morgan assumed the stove was being used as a metaphor for his terrific knock “under pressure,” which made the situation rather comical. But it turned out that one of the sponsors was the rice cooker brand.

Milk and rosewater

Indianapolis 500 victors are given a milk bottle, which they will gulp from and then pour over their heads (they even have to specify their milk preference before racing). Alcohol use is not unlawful in Bahrain, although it is not permitted outside. Therefore, Waard, a non-alcoholic rosewater beverage, is used in place of the customary victory spray at Formula 1 races.

A gigantic credit card

We have no doubt that the Kaiser Chiefs midfielder enjoyed the 2,000 South African Rand that he received from sponsors ABSA bank in April 2014 as a Man of the Match award, but we’re still not sure why the novelty credit card he was given had to be quite so big. This item would have been difficult to transport home, and using contactless payment would require at least two people to operate.

Flip Flops

A prize is a prize, but we don’t think a pair of flip-flops should ever be given out as the Man of the Match award except for the final match before the summer break. However, Ghanaian Premier League team Dreams FC decided to frequently award pairs of the infamously fragile shoes as a reward for exceptional performances via their sponsors. They don’t appear top of the line from the picture below, and the receiver appears more interested in being somewhere else than at the presentation.

A Burger King paper crown

Undoubtedly the least expensive item on this list, Franco Armani of Argentina received a paper crown from one of the fast food moguls following his outstanding River Plate performance against Danubio in March 2018. Armani was forced to give his post-game interview while wearing the crown due to sponsorship obligations, making him appear silly.

Sunshine snacks in CPL

One of the top T20 cricket competitions is the Caribbean Premier League. Since several T20 franchises worldwide had Caribbean cricketers as their main attraction, the West Indies Cricket Board decided to launch its own T20 League. Sunshine Snacks is one of the tournament’s many notable sponsors. Customers of the food companies receive nuts and chips, and they also follow this strategy with Man of the Matches. The sponsor gave players of the match award winners a snack basket, which was hilarious because the players couldn’t eat greasy snacks given the current fitness standards of the sport.

Bananas

Bicyclists adore bananas. They contain carbs to boost energy levels as well as potassium to assist in restoring electrolytes lost via perspiration. The opening stage winner in Alanya is awarded a few kilograms of bananas, proving that no one likes them nearly as much as the Presidential Cycling Tour of Turkey. That might not seem like much, but it makes sense because the city produces most of the fruit in Turkey, with about 40,000 tonnes produced yearly.

5GB of mobile data

In 2018, Hlompho Kekana of the South African team Mamelodi Sundowns went viral after receiving 5GB of mobile data from league sponsors after a performance that won him the “Man of the Match.” Such a prize would come in handy in a place where high-speed internet can be expensive. But it’s not the kind of thing you can put on your mantle and look back on when your career is gone!

A fresh fish

In August 2019, after winning Real Sociedad’s Player of the Month award, current Arsenal playmaker Martin Odegaard received a sizable fresh fish for reasons that we’ve never quite been able to decipher. He could have been excused for having the same confused look on his face as many others on this list at the age of 16, especially because he was earning a sizable weekly wage.

Top 15 Unusual Superstitions of football players

Superstitions and bizarre rituals have a very narrow border between them, but some people are able to cross it a little bit more than others. Superstition in football is surprisingly common. Players, managers, and team presidents all have their own rituals and lucky items, such as a favorite t-shirt or pair of underwear that they wear for good luck. They even have superstitions about what order to put on their boots. It is not surprising that team members of all levels, from players to managers to team presidents, also have their own superstitions before, during, and after games.

More specifically, football superstitions often revolve around rituals that are done before and during the game, such as crossing oneself or finding a specific seat to sit in. Some players even have lucky charms that they carry with them. There have been reports of teams having specific colors for playing gear or pregame meals to bring about good luck.

Football players also have superstitions about their equipment, such as the order in which they put on their boots or gloves. There have been reported cases of players wearing certain pieces of clothing throughout the season, believing it will bring them luck. Additionally, some players have rituals they perform before each game, such as spinning around a certain number of times or having a specific way of entering the field. Let’s have a look at some of the most unusual superstitions of football players.

Top 15 Unusual superstitions of football players

Cristiano Ronaldo

Arguably, the greatest footballer on earth, Cristiano Ronaldo, also carries a set of superstitions with him. The former Real Madrid superstar has a set of things he practices daily before every game. Cristiano Ronaldo is known for his superstitious behavior. He has been observed to wear the same pair of socks during a streak of games, cross himself before a match, and enter the field with his right foot first.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner also carries a lucky charm with him- an old Portuguese coin that was given to him by his grandfather. Ronaldo has several superstitious habits, such as being the first to disembark while traveling to a game by plane and standing in the same way during free-kicks. He also has other unique superstitions, such as eating a certain meal before a game or listening to a specific song.

Pele

Pele, one of the most successful league goal scorers and greatest players of all time, was not exempt from superstition. During a difficult period in his career, he thought the cause might be tied to a jersey he had given away to a fan after a match. He sent a friend on a mission to retrieve the jersey to remedy the situation.

Fortunately, the friend was able to locate the shirt and give it back to Pele. Shortly after, Pele’s goal-scoring form was restored. However, Pele’s friend didn’t really find his jersey but gave the three-time World Cup champion the jersey he had worn in the previous game. Nevertheless, his trick worked, and Pele got back into his old form.

Lionel Messi

Lionel Messi has an interesting superstitious ritual that he follows before taking a free kick – he will place the ball down with both hands, step back the same amount of steps each time, spread his legs, and take a deep breath. This technique has definitely paid off, with Messi often scoring goals from the resulting set piece!

Gareth Bale

Gareth Bale had a few superstitious rituals to help him avoid injuries. One of those was cutting holes in his socks before stepping onto the pitch, believing it helped to prevent compression on his calf muscles. He also used to drive his Lamborghini Aventador Roadster to games but stopped because he thought the seating put too much pressure on that area of his legs. His superstitions seem to have worked, as he left the game as one of the best to be out there.

John Terry

John Terry was well-known at Chelsea for having around 50 superstitions, such as sitting in the same place on the team bus and always listening to the same Usher album. He also had his own lucky pair of shin pads, which he wore for ten seasons. John Terry would definitely be a grandmaster if awards were given out for superstition.

Danielle De Rossi

The famous player from Rome was also known for his superstitious behavior. During the 2012 World Cup, Danielle De Rossi sported one long sleeve on his left arm, and a short sleeve on his right, which some say was an homage to the gladiators of the Colosseum. Others believe he may have been trying to hide a tattoo on his left arm.

Johan Cruyff

Johan Cruyff made an indelible mark on the history of football. His playing for Ajax and Barcelona helped to popularize the “total football” style, which led the Netherlands to a World Cup final. His iconic Cruyff turn is still one of the toughest skills to master for any footballer today. Despite his incredible football aptitude, Cruyff was famous for his pre-match rituals, which were very difficult to understand. Shortly before kick-off, he was known to slap goalkeeper Gert Bals in the stomach and then walk to the opposite half of the field to spit out his chewing gum toward the opposition goal.

“It’s odd I know, but it seems to work for me. Once I’ve gone through with my little system before the game, my mind is fully focused on what we have to do to be successful on the pitch,” said Cruyff.

Cruyff’s usual pre-match rituals were put to the test at the 1969 European Cup final when he forgot to chew gum. Cruyff slapped goalkeeper Gert Bals in the stomach as usual and walked to the opposite half of the field to try and realized he wasn’t chewing any gum. Unfortunately for Ajax, they ended up losing the match 4-1.

Phil Jones

Manchester United’s defender Phil Jones has an interesting superstition – he will determine whether to put on his left or right sock first depending on if the Red Devils are playing at home or away. This certainly makes for an intriguing pre-match ritual.

Jones explained: “The fixtures list United on the left side when we’re at home and on the right when we’re away. So this weekend, I’ll put my right sock on first because it will be Swansea v United.” “Next week, if I play against Benfica at Old Trafford, I’ll put my left sock on.”

He added: “I also don’t like stepping on white lines on the pitch. When I cross a white line, I’ll take the first step with the foot that corresponds to whether we’re home or away.”

Jamie Vardy

Jamie Vardy’s superstitious ritual prior to every Leicester City Premier League game during their successful 2015-2016 season was quite unique – he would drink half a bottle of port and then gulp three cans of Red Bull in one go the day before a match. It looks like this truly gave him the wings he needed to soar to success!

Cesc Fabregas

Cesc Fabregas had a curious pre-game ritual involving his wife, Daniella Semaan. He would kiss a ring she gave him four times (his lucky number) before putting it in the locker and stepping out on the pitch. It seems that this little superstition helped him perform on the pitch as he was a key player for Chelsea

Mesut Ozil

Former Fenerbahce star Mesut Ozil had some unusual pre-game rituals, such as tying several knots in his boots and always making sure to put the right boot on first. We’re sure his kit man had a tough time dealing with this superstitious behavior!

Zlatan Ibrahimovic

Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s pre-game ritual involves a sex ban for his wife, Helena Seger, as he believes it affects his performance on the pitch. He admitted to having a particularly bad game after an evening of fun, so this superstition is definitely something he sticks to.

Thibaut Courtois

Thibaut Courtois is known to have a superstitious ritual that he follows during Belgium’s national anthem – he touches his chin for good luck. Observant fans have spotted this many times during games, and it looks like this ritual has been successful in keeping him at the top of his game!

David Beckham

Before leaving for a game, David Beckham (who admits he suffers from obsessive-compulsive disorder) was known to have a superstitious ritual of making sure all the condiments in his fridge were arranged perfectly. He had to make sure nothing was out of place before he left his house.

Wayne Rooney

Wayne Rooney’s pre-game snack of choice is no surprise – he loved to drink a bowl of Coco Pops cereal! This makes sense, as the cereal is known for its chocolatey taste, and it likely gives him a boost before taking the pitch.

“I tend to have just a bowl of coco pops,” he once admitted. “The normal ones, not the moons and the stars.”
