16-Year-Old Manas Dhamne Replaces Sumit Nagal in India’s Davis Cup Team

The All India Tennis Association (AITA) has made a significant change to its Davis Cup team for the upcoming World Group tie against Sweden, scheduled for September 14-15 in Stockholm. The country’s top-ranked player, Sumit Nagal, has been replaced by 16-year-old Manas Dhamne.

Nagal, who has participated in all four Grand Slams this year and achieved a career-best ranking of 73, has withdrawn from the tie due to a back strain. The injury also forced him to withdraw from the doubles event at the ongoing US Open in New York.

The decision to replace Nagal with Dhamne was made after careful consideration by the selection committee, led by chairman Nandan Bal, captain Rohit Rajpal, and coach Ashutosh Singh. Dhamne, who trains at the Piatti Centre in Italy, has a career-best junior ranking of 43 and has been competing regularly on the men’s circuit for several months.

The Indian team for the Davis Cup tie now consists of Ramkumar Ramanathan, Niki Poonacha, Sidharth Vishwakarma, Sriram Balaji, and Manas Dhamne. Aryan Shah has been named as a reserve.

The tie against Sweden will be played on indoor hardcourt, a surface that favors the Indian team. India has a strong record in Davis Cup, having won the title in 1974 and 2018. The team will be looking to continue its success in Stockholm and secure a place in the World Group I playoffs.

LSG’s Mayank Yadav Dubbed “Rolls Royce” by Jonty Rhodes

Former South African cricketer and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) fielding coach Jonty Rhodes has heaped praise on young Indian pacer Mayank Yadav, calling him the “Rolls Royce” of the IPL franchise. Yadav, a product of Delhi’s Sonnet Cricket Club, made a stunning debut for LSG in IPL 2024, showcasing his raw pace and impressive skills.

In his debut match against Punjab Kings (PBKS), Yadav consistently bowled above 145 kmph and returned with figures of 3 for 27, including a top speed of 155.8 km/h. He continued to impress in the four matches he played for LSG, picking up four wickets with an economy of 6.99.

However, Yadav’s promising season was cut short by an injury against Gujarat Titans. He suffered a side strain, which was later confirmed as lower abdomen soreness, and was ruled out for the remainder of the tournament.

Despite the setback, Rhodes believes that Yadav has immense potential and is a valuable asset for LSG. “He’s like the Rolls Royce of bowlers, similar to how we used to call Allan Donald a Rolls Royce,” Rhodes said. “He had a whole season with the team and that’s why the owners decided to keep him with the team.”

Rhodes emphasized the importance of managing Yadav’s workload and ensuring that he is physically and mentally prepared for the rigors of the IPL. “He doesn’t need to bowl 30 minutes every day in the nets,” Rhodes said. “He just needs to top up to make sure that he from a mental and emotional point of view feels that he’s ready.”

Rhodes also highlighted the challenges that Yadav faces as a young pacer bowling to some of the best batters in the world. “You’ve got pace, but you can’t bowl in good areas or with good skill, the better players will hit you out the ground,” he said.

Rhodes expressed his hope that Yadav will remain fit and available for the entire IPL 2025 season, whether with LSG or another franchise. “There’s a talent that is exciting,” he concluded.

Nagal’s absence is a big blow to the Indian team. The 25-year-old is India’s highest-ranked singles player and has been a key member of the team in recent years.

Former national champion Ashutosh Singh has been named as the new coach of the national team. Singh, who has previously coached Yuki Bhambri and Saketh Myneni, will be tasked with guiding India to victory in the Davis Cup tie against Sweden.

Scotland’s Women’s T20 World Cup squad, led by all-rounder Kathryn Bryce, is brimming with talent and experience. The team’s maiden appearance at the global tournament will be a testament to their remarkable progress in recent years.

Kathryn Bryce, a versatile all-rounder, will don the captain’s armband, while her sister Sarah Bryce, a wicketkeeper, will serve as vice-captain. The squad boasts a formidable lineup of all-rounders, including Priyanaz Chatterji, Katherine Fraser, and Megan McColl.

“The balance of this squad is exceptional,” said head coach Craig Wallace. “We have match-winners throughout the lineup, which is a significant improvement in the team’s evolution. Players have consistently delivered crucial performances, and that depth extends across the entire squad.”

Scotland’s qualification for the tournament was secured after finishing second to Sri Lanka in the qualifier held in the UAE earlier this year. Their impressive performances in the Netherlands, where they triumphed in five out of six matches in a tri-series against the hosts and Papua New Guinea, further showcased their capabilities.

“The recent Netherlands series demonstrated the depth within our squad,” Wallace added. “Players who were not selected for this tournament have pushed and performed consistently throughout the year. It’s a testament to the hard work and dedication of the entire group.”

Thirteen members of Scotland’s qualifier squad have been retained for the T20 World Cup, including offspinner Olivia Bell and former captain Abbi Aitken-Drummond, who impressed in the Netherlands.

Scotland will face a formidable challenge in Group B, which includes England, Bangladesh, South Africa, and West Indies. They will depart for the UAE in mid-September for a training camp and two warm-up matches against Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Their tournament opener is scheduled against Bangladesh on October 3.

In an unforgettable moment that has left audiences around the globe in awe, 17-year-old Paralympic archer Sheetal Devi began her competition in outstanding fashion by hitting a perfect bullseye. As a passionate follower of the Paralympics, I was not only thrilled to witness her performance but also deeply moved by the immense talent and determination she showcased on such a grand stage.

Sheetal’s journey in archery is nothing short of remarkable. Competing in the Paralympics, she shot her first arrow with incredible accuracy, securing a bullseye that echoed throughout the arena. Though Sheetal’s journey at the paralympic has come to an end. But during her time there hse has shown immense skill and determination. Shel had secured a second-place finish in the ranking round, narrowly missing a world para archery record by just one point.

Mariana Zuniga of Chile was her opponent in the Women’s Individual Compound Open 1/8 Elimination match, and it was an intense match. Although both archers showed incredible talent and tenacity, Zuniga ultimately prevailed by the slimmest of margins, winning 138–137.

As Sheetal continues her journey in the Paralympics, I am excited to see what else she will accomplish. Yulia Putintseva: Tennis Star and Vlogging Sensation

US Open 2024 witnesses ugly moment

In the match between Yulia Putintseva and Jasmine Paolini, the game witnessed an awkward moment between Putintseva and the ball girl. This incident took place during the third round and it attracted criticism on social media.

During this match at the Louis Armstrong Stadium, Putintseva motioned for the ball girl to toss the tennis balls to her. However, instead of catching the first two balls, she allowed them to bounce off the ground before finally catching the third and picking up the others. The ball girl appeared stunned by this sequence, while the crowd, sensing the disrespect in the moment, responded with boos directed at Putintseva.

Following the incident, Putintseva issued a public apology, acknowledging her actions and expressing regret over how the situation unfolded.

“I want to apologize to the ball girl for the way I was, when she was giving me balls. Honestly speaking it was not about her. I was really pissed at myself by not winning the game from the breakpoint and then got empty with my emotions and deep in my thoughts, that I was not even focusing on what’s going on and who gives me the ball… All the ball kids was doing amazing as always at the open. ”

This incident is a stark reminder of the importance of sportsmanship in tennis and all sports. Players are often viewed as role models, and their behavior on and off the court can significantly impact their young fans and aspiring players.

I hope that this serves as a learning opportunity not only for Putintseva but also for others in the competitive sports environment. Respect for everyone involved in the game from fellow competitors to ball girls and umpires is crucial for maintaining the spirit of sports.

Bopanna-Ebden Bow Out of US Open Men's Doubles in Third Round

Bopanna-Ebden Bow Out of US Open Men’s Doubles in Third Round

India’s hopes in the men’s doubles event at the US Open came to an end as the second-seeded pair of Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden bowed out in the third round. The Argentine duo of Maximo Gonzalez and Andres Molteni, seeded 16th, proved too strong for Bopanna and Ebden, winning in straight sets 6-1, 7-5 in a match that lasted just 66 minutes.

Bopanna and Ebden had enjoyed a successful season, having won the Australian Open earlier this year. However, their US Open campaign was cut short by the Argentine pair, who played with greater consistency and aggression throughout the match.

Bopanna’s defeat marks the end of India’s challenge in the men’s doubles event at the US Open. Sumit Nagal had earlier exited in the first round of the men’s singles, while Yuki Bhambri and N Sriram Balaji had also lost in the men’s doubles at different stages of the tournament.

Despite the setback in the men’s doubles, Bopanna’s challenge at the US Open is not over. He is still alive in the mixed doubles event, where he has partnered with Indonesian Aldila Sutjiadi. Interestingly, Bopanna and Ebden will now face off against each other in the mixed doubles, as Ebden has teamed up with Czech Republic’s Barbora Krejcikova.

Bopanna’s retirement from Davis Cup has already been announced, and it remains to be seen whether he will return to defend his Australian Open crown in January 2025. However, his performance at the US Open has shown that he is still a force to be reckoned with in the doubles circuit.
