Dharamsala Stadium: A Picturesque Cricket Paradise in the Himalayas

Nestled amidst the picturesque Dhauladhar mountain range in Himachal Pradesh, the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) stadium in Dharamsala has emerged as a global icon for its breathtaking beauty and unparalleled cricket experience. Standing tall at an altitude of 1,457 meters above sea level, this stadium offers spectators a panoramic view of the snow-capped Himalayas, lush greenery, and the vibrant city of Dharamsala.

The stadium’s unique setting has garnered international acclaim, with cricket legend Wasim Akram recently highlighting its beauty on the renowned Pakistani sports show, The Pavilion. Akram drew comparisons between Dharamsala and other picturesque stadiums like New Zealand’s Queenstown Stadium, lamenting the lack of similar venues in Pakistan.

The HPCA stadium has played host to numerous memorable cricket matches, including India’s fifth and final Test match against England in 2022. In this match, India secured a dominant victory by an innings and 64 runs, clinching the series 4-1. Ravichandran Ashwin’s five-wicket haul in the second innings cemented his place among the elite spin legends of the game.

Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the HPCA stadium is also renowned for its excellent playing conditions. The pitch offers a balanced contest between bat and ball, while the outfield is meticulously maintained to ensure fast and accurate fielding. The stadium’s modern facilities, including state-of-the-art dressing rooms, media centers, and spectator amenities, further enhance the overall experience.

The stadium’s popularity has not only boosted tourism in Dharamsala but has also inspired the development of other picturesque cricket venues in India. The Eden Gardens in Kolkata, the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, and the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru are just a few examples of stadiums that have embraced the concept of combining cricket with stunning surroundings.

As the popularity of cricket continues to grow worldwide, the HPCA stadium in Dharamsala stands as a testament to the transformative power of sports. Its breathtaking beauty and unparalleled cricket experience have made it a global destination for fans and players alike, inspiring the creation of similar venues that enhance the joy of the game.

BNP Paribas Open Introduces Mixed Doubles Invitational with $150,000 Purse

BNP Paribas Open Introduces Mixed Doubles Invitational with $150,000 Purse

Mixed Doubles Makes a Splash at BNP Paribas Open

The BNP Paribas Open, a prestigious joint ATP and WTA 1000 event, is set to introduce a groundbreaking initiative on Wednesday: a mixed doubles invitational with a substantial $150,000 purse. This exciting addition to the tournament has garnered praise from renowned coach Brad Gilbert, who described it as “very cool.”

The invitational will feature eight teams competing in a knockout format, boasting an impressive roster of 11 doubles major-winners. Among the participants are two couples who are also partners off the court: Katerina Siniakova and Tomas Machac from the Czech Republic, and Desirae Kraczyk and Andrew Harris, an American-Australian duo.

The inclusion of mixed doubles at the BNP Paribas Open marks a significant step forward for the discipline. While mixed doubles has been a staple at the four Grand Slams since before the Open Era and returned to the Olympics in 2012, it has struggled to gain traction on the ATP and WTA tours.

However, the advent of the United Cup in 2022 has reignited interest in mixed doubles. This innovative event, which features men and women competing for their countries on teams, became the first mixed-gender team event to offer both ATP and WTA rankings points. It replaced the Hopman Cup, which served as a similar tune-up event from 1989 to 2019.

The success of the United Cup has raised hopes that the BNP Paribas Open’s mixed doubles invitational could pave the way for more mixed doubles events on the tour. Only time will tell if this latest innovation will lead to a resurgence of mixed doubles in the tennis world.

Indian Shooters Adopt New Strategy for Paris 2024 Glory

Indian Shooters Aim for Paris 2024 Glory with New Strategy

In the wake of a disappointing performance at the Tokyo Olympics, the Indian shooting contingent is implementing a revised strategy for the upcoming Paris 2024 Games. Recognizing the need for a more balanced approach, the shooters will now prioritize rest and recovery in the lead-up to the event.

National rifle coach Suma Shirur emphasized the importance of this “big change,” explaining that the shooters will fly to Paris from home after a period of recharge. This contrasts with the extended training camp in Croatia prior to the Tokyo Games, which contributed to the team’s lackluster performance.

India’s shooters have already secured a record 19 quota places for the Paris Olympics. After the domestic Olympic trials in April-May, the team will participate in the ISSF World Cup in Munich from May 31 to June 8. This will be their only competition before the Games.

Following the World Cup, the shooters will have a brief training camp in Germany before returning to India for mental rejuvenation. Shirur believes this approach will allow the athletes to peak at the right time.

“After the Olympic trials, we’ll be going to the Munich World Cup, which is the first and the last competition where the team gets a chance to be comfortable in the shoes of being an Olympian,” Shirur said. “After the World Cup, we will have a short training camp in Germany. Shooters will have the chance to come back (to India) and emotionally recover, recharge and rejuvenate before we have a small camp and then fly to the Games.”

With a strong quota count and the momentum from last year’s Asian Games, the Indian shooting team is focused on building an efficient path to Paris. Rifle shooters have been particularly successful in securing quotas early.

“The shooters are in a very good zone now, so now it’s about sharpening things as we move forward,” Shirur said. “Most of the work has been done since last year. Now, we just need to fine tune them and focus on how to perform. Self-regulation is one of the most important aspects we are going to be working on going forward, because no matter how you feel, you still need to be able to go out there and perform.”

Bengaluru IPL Matches Unlikely to be Affected by Water Shortage

Bengaluru IPL Matches Unlikely to be Affected by Water Shortage

Bengaluru’s acute water shortage has raised concerns about the fate of the three Indian Premier League (IPL) matches scheduled to be played in the city. However, the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) has assured that it is well-equipped to meet the water demand for the matches.

The city is facing its worst water crisis in four decades, prompting calls to shift the IPL games out of Bengaluru. However, KSCA CEO Shubendu Ghosh expressed confidence that the association can adhere to the government’s water usage guidelines.

“We are not facing any crisis at the moment,” Ghosh said. “We have received the state government’s notice on water usage, and we are constantly meeting to ensure we follow the guidelines.”

The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has prohibited the use of potable water for non-essential purposes, such as gardening and vehicle washing. Ghosh stated that the KSCA will rely on water from the sewage treatment plant (STP) within the M Chinnaswamy Stadium for watering the outfield and pitch.

“We are already using STP water for these purposes,” Ghosh said. “We estimate that we will need 10,000-15,000 liters of water for match purposes, which we are confident we can generate from the STP.”

Ghosh emphasized that the KSCA will not use groundwater for watering. “We are closely monitoring the government’s water usage policy, but we are confident that we can meet all the requirements,” he said.

The first IPL match in Bengaluru will feature the local franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) taking on Punjab Kings on March 25. RCB will then face Kolkata Knight Riders on March 29 and Lucknow SuperGiants on April 2.

RCB officials also expressed confidence in conducting the matches despite the water scarcity. “We are aware of the situation and are in touch with the KSCA,” an official said. “We have two weeks before the first match, so we are confident that we can ensure a smooth conduct of the games.”

The M Chinnaswamy Stadium complies with the norms of the National Green Tribunal, which has implemented systems to address water scarcity scenarios.

Virat Kohli's Unquenchable Thirst for World Cup Glory

Virat Kohli’s Unquenchable Thirst for World Cup Glory

Former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh believes that star batsman Virat Kohli remains driven by an unyielding desire to secure another World Cup triumph. Despite missing out on the prestigious title on three previous occasions, Kohli’s hunger for victory remains undiminished.

Kohli made his World Cup debut in 2011, where he played a pivotal role in India’s historic victory, ending the country’s 28-year wait for the coveted prize. Since then, he has participated in eight World Cups, shattering numerous records along the way. He surpassed batting legend Sachin Tendulkar’s record for the most centuries in ODIs and secured the highest run tally in a single edition of a World Cup.

However, despite these achievements, Kohli’s desire for the elusive World Cup title remains unfulfilled. Harbhajan Singh believes that this burning desire will continue to fuel Kohli’s performances until he finally gets his hands on the trophy.

“Virat Kohli didn’t appear on the ground. He needed a well-deserving rest and he got it. In 2011 he won a World Cup, he got into the team and he won the World Cup for the first time, we had already played three or four World Cups and he won it for the first time. It was luck and after that, Virat turned into a big player he played in 2015, 2019, and 2023, and even after that he couldn’t get his hands on the trophy,” Harbhajan said on his YouTube channel.

“So that feeling stays in the mind of the player. I think he won’t be satisfied until he gets his hand on the trophy. He has broken a lot of records and scored a lot of runs. His hunger will be satisfied when he gets his hands on the World Cup trophy,” he added.

Kohli will return to the field in the IPL 2024, where he will lead Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in their quest for their maiden IPL title. RCB will kick off their IPL 2024 campaign against defending champions Chennai Super Kings in the season opener at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Bengaluru.

Russia Urges Against Paris Olympics Boycott Despite IOC Restrictions

Russia Urges Against Paris Olympics Boycott Despite IOC Restrictions

Russia’s Sports Minister Oleg Matytsin has urged against boycotting the upcoming Paris Olympics despite the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) restrictions on Russian athletes. The IOC suspended Russia from the 2024 Games due to the Kremlin’s offensive in Ukraine, but allowed Russian athletes to compete as neutrals if they do not support the war.

Matytsin emphasized the importance of maintaining dialogue and participation in competitions. He acknowledged that the IOC’s stance is unlikely to soften, but stressed the need for Russian athletes to have the opportunity to compete. He noted that different international federations have varying approaches to Russian participation, with some banning it outright and others allowing it under neutral status.

Despite the ban, Matytsin believes the Olympics remain crucial for Russia. He stated that it is essential to provide athletes with a platform to showcase their abilities and demonstrate the country’s sporting prowess. He added that the decision of whether or not to participate should be left to individual athletes, as each federation has its own regulations.

Russia has previously condemned the IOC’s restrictions as discriminatory and humiliating. However, it has not yet issued a formal recommendation to its athletes regarding participation in Paris. President Vladimir Putin has also refrained from providing guidance, stating that the conditions need to be carefully analyzed.

The IOC’s restrictions include a ban on Russian and Belarusian flags and anthems, as well as a prohibition on government officials attending the Games. Athletes from these countries must also not actively support the war or be affiliated with military or security agencies.

Russia’s participation in the Olympic movement has been limited in recent years due to state-sponsored doping scandals. The country was banned from the 2018 Winter Olympics and had its participation in the 2020 Summer Olympics restricted.

Harry Brook Withdraws from IPL 2024 to Support Grieving Family

Harry Brook Withdraws from IPL 2024 to Support Grieving Family

England batter Harry Brook has made the difficult decision to withdraw from the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season to be with his family during their time of grief following the recent passing of his grandmother.

Brook, who was acquired by the Delhi Capitals for INR 4 crore (USD 482,000) at the auction in December, expressed his gratitude for the support he has received from the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and the Capitals. He emphasized that prioritizing his mental well-being and that of his family is paramount.

The 25-year-old had previously withdrawn from England’s recent five-Test series in India due to his grandmother’s illness. He stated that he made the decision to leave the tour the night before the team’s departure to India after being informed of her condition.

Brook’s absence leaves the Capitals with an overseas roster comprising David Warner, Mitchell Marsh, Tristan Stubbs, Shai Hope, Lungi Ngidi, Anrich Nortje, and Jhye Richardson. The team will be led by Rishabh Pant, who has been cleared to play as a wicketkeeper-batter after recovering from injuries sustained in a car accident.

Brook’s decision highlights the importance of mental health and family support in the demanding world of professional sports. His statement serves as a reminder that personal well-being should always be prioritized, even when it means making difficult choices.

New Zealand to Tour Pakistan for Five T20Is in April

New Zealand to Tour Pakistan for Five T20Is in April

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has confirmed New Zealand’s tour of Pakistan for a five-match T20I series in April 2024. The Black Caps will arrive in Islamabad on April 14 and play three matches in Rawalpindi from April 18 to 21, followed by two more at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on April 25 and 27.

This tour marks New Zealand’s third visit to Pakistan since December 2022, highlighting the growing camaraderie between the two cricketing nations. The visitors played two Tests and three ODIs in Pakistan at the turn of that year, before returning in April 2023 for a series of ten white-ball games.

The upcoming T20I series will serve as New Zealand’s final international engagement before the T20 World Cup in June. It will also be a crucial part of Pakistan’s preparations for the global event, with the hosts set to play a total of 12 T20Is ahead of the tournament.

However, the series clashes with the Indian Premier League (IPL), which means several of New Zealand’s leading T20 cricketers may be unavailable. Daryl Mitchell, Mitchell Santner, Kane Williamson, Rachin Ravindra, Trent Boult, Glenn Phillips, and Lockie Ferguson are all contracted by IPL teams this season.

Despite the potential absence of some key players, the PCB is confident that the series will be highly competitive. “This tour symbolises the deep-rooted ties and mutual respect that define the relationship between our two cricketing nations,” said Usman Wahla, the PCB’s director of international cricket.

The series will take place shortly after the holy month of Ramzan and the Eid holidays, with games scheduled to begin at 7pm local time. The final few games of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) have necessitated a late start because of Ramzan, taking place at 9pm.

Ashwin Slams England’s “Bazball” Approach as “Defenseless Cricket”

Ravichandran Ashwin, the veteran Indian spinner, has criticized England’s “Bazball” approach, calling it “defenseless cricket.” Ashwin’s comments come after India’s 4-1 victory in the recently concluded five-match Test series against England.

Ashwin took particular issue with James Anderson’s claim ahead of Day 4 of the second Test that England would chase down the 399-run target within 60 overs. The result was quite different, as the visitors were bowled out and defeated comprehensively. Ashwin expressed surprise at the over-the-top statement, saying that although it was a show of positive mindset, it “went too far.”

“James Anderson went into a press conference in the second Test after winning the first considerably well. Much respect to them for winning that. He told the press that even if the 4th innings target was 500 or 600, we’ll finish it in 60 overs. Even though it was an example of their positive mindset, it felt like they had gone too far,” Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.

Ashwin also believes that Bazball leans more towards being a “defenseless cricket” and although Joe Root is a great player of spin, his game was also impacted due to the style of cricket.

“The one thing I understood after the first Test is that Bazball isn’t just aggressive cricket. It is defenseless cricket. They aren’t going to play a defensive shot at all. They are going to get out if they play defense. To my surprise, Joe Root also agreed to their game plan. Because if you take world cricket’s vest defense rankings, Root is an easy number 1 on that list against spin. He also bought into their approach,” he said.

On the second day of the Rajkot Test match, Ashwin dismissed England’s Zak Crawley to pocket his 500th Test scalp. Before him, only Anil Kumble reached the milestone among Indians. He became the ninth bowler worldwide to take 500 wickets. However, hours after the feat, Ashwin went through a traumatic experience for which he had to leave the squad on an immediate basis.

“Ravichandran Ashwin has withdrawn from the Test squad, effective immediately due to a family medical emergency. In these challenging times, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the team fully supports Ashwin,” said BCCI in its release. Reports said Ashwin’s mother Chitra had suffered a medical emergency.

Now, Ashwin has revealed how exactly thing transpired. “We went to the dressing room for another debrief and then back to our rooms. Rohit, me, and others were just discussing some things about the match here and there.”

“That is when I realized I was not getting calls from my parents or wife. I thought they were busy attending calls and giving interviews. I called my wife around 7 PM, asking why my parents weren’t answering my call. Her voice was a bit shaky. She asked me to come separately from the crowd and told me that my mother collapsed after a headache,” Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.

“I blanked out. I did not know how to react or what questions to ask. I was crying but wanted to ensure nobody was watching me cry. It is unnecessary to think of it that way, but it was instinctive. I could not think. I was crying in my room for some time.”

“Then, the team physio checked on me as I was not picking up calls. Rahul Bhai and Rohit Bhai also came to check on me, and all I could tell them was that I could not think clearly,” he added.
