Federer Pens Emotional Tribute to Nadal Ahead of Farewell Event

Tennis legend Roger Federer has penned an emotional tribute to his long-time rival and friend Rafael Nadal ahead of the Spaniard’s farewell event, the Davis Cup. Nadal, who has battled injuries in recent years, is contemplating retirement from the sport.

Federer’s heartfelt note reflects on their epic rivalry and the impact Nadal has had on his career. “You beat me—a lot,” Federer writes. “You challenged me in ways no one else could. On clay, it felt like I was stepping into your backyard.”

Nadal’s dominance on clay is legendary, with 14 French Open titles to his name. Federer acknowledges Nadal’s unique rituals and intensity, which he secretly admired. “All those rituals. Assembling your water bottles like toy soldiers in formation, fixing your hair, adjusting your underwear… All of it with the highest intensity. Secretly, I kind of loved the whole thing.”

Despite their rivalry, Federer and Nadal have shared many memorable moments. They played a historic match on half-grass, half-clay and broke the all-time attendance record in Cape Town, South Africa. Federer also recalls their doubles partnership at the Laver Cup in 2022, which was Federer’s final match.

“Sharing the court with you that night, and sharing those tears, will forever be one of the most special moments of my career,” Federer writes.

Federer concludes his note by expressing his admiration for Nadal’s role model status and his impact on young players. “You have always been a role model for kids around the world, and Mirka and I are so glad that our children have all trained at your academies.”

“Rafa, I know you’re focused on the last stretch of your epic career. We will talk when it’s done. For now, I just want to congratulate your family and team, who all played a massive role in your success. And I want you to know that your old friend is always cheering for you, and will be cheering just as loud for everything you do next.”
