Joni Kauko, the Finnish midfielder who played a pivotal role in Mohun Bagan’s resurgence last season, has surprisingly joined Inter Kashi in the I-League, a division below his former club. Despite rumors of a return to his boyhood club Inter Turku, Kauko opted for a new challenge with Inter Kashi, coached by Antonio Lopez Habas, who also guided Mohun Bagan to success.
Kauko’s move to Inter Kashi was a coup for the Uttar Pradesh-based club, which has built a strong roster this season. The 34-year-old midfielder, who has played in Finland, Germany, and the European Championship, brings experience and leadership to the team.
Habas, who had expressed his desire to retire in India, was convinced by Inter Kashi official Prithvijit Das to take up the project. He believes Kauko can be a role model for the club’s young players, citing his humility and international experience.
Kauko’s signing is reminiscent of Borja Fernandez, who helped ATK win two ISL titles. Habas, who coached Fernandez at ATK, sees similarities between the two midfielders.
Inter Kashi has been training for nearly three months ahead of the I-League season, which begins on November 22. Both Habas and Kauko are eager for the season to start, despite the shorter pre-season than ideal.
