Manu Bhaker Defends Carrying Medals, Slams Critics

Indian shooting sensation Manu Bhaker made history at the Paris Olympics 2024, becoming the first Indian Olympian to win multiple medals at a single Games. Her bronze medals in the women’s 10m air pistol and mixed team event brought immense pride to the nation. However, her recent actions have sparked controversy, with some criticizing her for carrying her medals to various events.

Bhaker has been attending numerous functions where she is felicitated for her achievements. It is customary for athletes to display their medals on such occasions. However, some internet trolls have taken to social media to mock her, creating memes and gifs that portray her as obsessed with her medals.

In response to the criticism, Bhaker has defended her actions. “Why will I not?” she told Times of India. “Everyone wants to see the medal, so I carry it in case someone wants to see it.” She also emphasized that the medals belong to the entire nation of India.

Bhaker’s success in Paris was a redemption song after her disappointing performance at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. A pistol malfunction had prevented her from qualifying for the finals, leaving her heartbroken. However, she used that experience to fuel her determination and emerge victorious in Paris.

“I was very scared in Tokyo,” Bhaker said. “I let the pressure get to me. But I learned from that and took those lessons to Paris.”

Bhaker’s achievements have reignited India’s hopes of becoming a shooting powerhouse. Her success, along with the recent strides made by badminton and hockey, has boosted the country’s sporting prowess.
