Kolkata’s Mohun Bagan Super Giant put on a dominant display in the Indian Super League (ISL) derby against Mohammedan Sporting, securing a resounding 3-0 victory. Greg Stewart emerged as the star of the show, contributing two assists and a goal to lead Bagan to their first win of the season.
Stewart’s impact was evident from the outset, as he orchestrated Bagan’s attacks with ease. His flicked header set up Jamie Maclaren for the opening goal in the 8th minute, while his free-kick found Subhasish Bose for the third goal in the 36th minute. In between, Stewart showcased his individual brilliance with a stunning solo effort, dribbling past defenders and firing a shot into the bottom corner.
Bagan’s midfield dominance was a key factor in their victory. Stewart, Thapa, and Ralte controlled the tempo of the game, creating numerous chances for their forwards. Maclaren, despite missing the pre-season due to injury, looked sharp and dangerous, while Manvir Singh and Ashish Rai provided width and support.
Mohammedan Sporting, on the other hand, struggled to cope with Bagan’s intensity and quality. Their defense was repeatedly breached, and they failed to create any significant scoring opportunities. Coach Andrey Chernyshov admitted that his team was outplayed and lacked physicality.
Bagan coach Jose Molina expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance but acknowledged that they could have scored more goals. He praised Stewart’s contribution and highlighted the improved balance in the team’s formation.
The international break will provide both teams with an opportunity to regroup and prepare for the upcoming fixtures. Bagan will look to build on their momentum, while Mohammedan Sporting will need to address their defensive weaknesses.
