Neeraj Chopra, India’s double Olympic medalist in javelin throw, has embarked on a new chapter in his career by joining forces with legendary javelin thrower Jan Zelezny. Zelezny, a three-time Olympic and World champion and the current world record holder, will serve as Chopra’s new coach.
Chopra has long admired Zelezny’s technique and precision, and he believes that working with him will be invaluable. “Growing up, I admired Jan’s technique and precision and spent a lot of time watching videos of him,” said Chopra. “He was the best in the sport for so many years, and I believe that working with him will be invaluable because our throwing styles are similar, and his knowledge is unmatched.”
Zelezny is equally excited about the opportunity to work with Chopra. “I have already spoken about Neeraj as a great talent many years ago,” said Zelezny. “When I saw him early in his career, I realized great possibilities for top results. I also said that if I should start to coach somebody from outside Czechia, my first choice would be Neeraj.”
Zelezny believes that Chopra has the potential to become one of the greatest javelin throwers of all time. “I see big potential, as he is young and able to improve,” said Zelezny. “I believe in his progress, especially in the technical aspect, so that he can continue achieving top positions at the main championships.”
The collaboration between Chopra and Zelezny is a fusion of generations, with the young champion drawing inspiration and expertise from what many consider the greatest javelin thrower of all time. Zelezny has coached two-time Olympic Champion and three-time World Champion Barbora Špotáková, as well as Jakub Vadlejch and Vítězslav Veselý, who won silver and bronze medals, respectively, at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
Chopra is eager to learn from Zelezny and to build on the successes that have defined his career. “It’s an honor to have Jan by my side as I push towards the next level in my career, and I can’t wait to get started,” said Chopra.
