Harleen Deol Ruled Out of WPL 2024 for Gujarat Giants

Gujarat Giants’ Harleen Deol’s WPL 2024 Campaign Cut Short by Injury

Gujarat Giants have suffered a significant setback with the news that batter Harleen Deol has been ruled out of the remainder of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2024 due to an injury. Deol sustained a knee injury during the Giants’ third group-stage match against UP Warriorz in Bengaluru.

The incident occurred in the first over of Warriorz’s innings when Deol, stationed at sweeper cover, raced to her right to intercept a ball. She immediately clutched her left knee and limped off the field. Deol has not been seen in action since.

Deol’s absence is a major blow to the Giants, who have already been plagued by injuries. Uncapped fast bowler Kashvee Gautam was ruled out before the tournament began, while Australia’s Lauren Cheatle had to withdraw after undergoing a medical procedure. Additionally, vice-captain Sneh Rana has missed the last two matches due to an undisclosed injury.

Deol’s performance in the WPL 2024 had been underwhelming. She batted at No. 3 in the Giants’ season opener, where she fell for 8. In the second game, she was slotted in as an opener where she scored 22 off 31 balls. For the match against Warriorz, she was back at No. 3, where she managed 18 off 24.

Deol’s replacement, 29-year-old Bharti Fulmali, has played two T20Is for India and represents Vidarbha in domestic cricket. She was also part of the Trailblazers squad in the Women’s T20 Challenge, which preceded the WPL.

The Giants, currently at the bottom of the table, had a torrid start to their tournament, losing the first four matches. However, they turned a corner in their last game against Royal Challengers Bangalore, picking a win by 19 runs in Delhi. They next play Mumbai Indians on March 9 in Delhi.

Mumbai Indians Post Competitive Total Despite Early Jitters in WPL Match

Mumbai Indians Post Competitive Total Despite Early Jitters in WPL Match

Mumbai Indians (MI) overcame early setbacks to post a competitive 160/6 against UP Warriorz in a Women’s Premier League match in New Delhi on March 7.

After losing both openers cheaply, Nat Sciver-Brunt (45 off 31) and skipper Harmanpreet Kaur (33 off 30) steadied the MI innings with a 59-run partnership. However, the innings gained momentum thanks to Amelia Kerr (39 not out off 23 balls) and Sajeevan Sajana (22 not out off 14 balls), who added 43 runs in the final 4.2 overs.

MI’s innings began with a shaky start as Yastika Bhatia and Hayley Mathews were dismissed within the first four overs by Chamari Athapaththu. Sciver-Brunt played aggressively, hitting eight boundaries, while Harmanpreet played a more cautious role.

Sciver-Brunt’s innings was cut short by Rajeshwari Gayakwad, who deceived her with a quicker delivery. Harmanpreet then took the initiative, hitting a boundary and a maximum off Gayakwad.

UP skipper Alyssa Healy made a crucial bowling change, bringing in Saima Thakor in the 15th over. Thakor dismissed Harmanpreet with her first delivery, and Amanjot Kaur was caught soon after.

However, Kerr and Sajana played some impressive shots towards the end, including a six by Kerr off Deepti Sharma. Their partnership helped MI reach a respectable total.

Quetta Gladiators' Usman Tariq Reported for Suspect Bowling Action

Quetta Gladiators’ Usman Tariq Faces Scrutiny Over Suspect Bowling Action

Quetta Gladiators’ enigmatic spinner Usman Tariq has found himself under the microscope after being reported for a suspect bowling action during the team’s match against Karachi Kings on Wednesday. The report, however, does not immediately suspend Tariq from bowling. He is permitted to continue until a formal bowling action test can be scheduled at a PCB-approved facility.

Should Tariq be reported again during the Pakistan Super League (PSL), he will be barred from bowling further. This is Tariq’s maiden PSL season, where he has emerged as one of the most unconventional spin bowlers. The right-arm spinner executes a peculiar delivery stride, coming to an almost complete standstill before releasing the ball with a slinging, side-arm action.

Despite his unorthodox style, Tariq has enjoyed moderate success in the tournament, particularly in terms of economy rate. In the three matches he has played, he has conceded runs at a rate of 5.73. While the Gladiators boast Abrar Ahmed, arguably Pakistan’s premier spin bowling option, they have opted to field Tariq in three of their games.

The Gladiators have enjoyed a successful season by recent standards, winning four and losing two matches. They are one victory away from securing their first playoff berth in five years. The timing of Tariq’s bowling action test remains uncertain. Pakistan possesses an ICC-accredited biomechanics laboratory in Lahore. However, with the remaining PSL fixtures scheduled for Karachi and Rawalpindi, it is unclear whether Tariq will need to travel to Lahore before the tournament concludes.

England to Ignore Opponent Analysis in Dharamsala Test

England to Ignore Opponent Analysis in Dharamsala Test

England’s assistant coach Marcus Trescothick has made a bold claim that the team will not focus heavily on studying their opponents, despite India’s dominance on Day 1 of the fifth Test in Dharamsala.

After England’s disappointing performance, Trescothick emphasized the team’s unique approach to the game. “We are a very unique side in how we go about things,” he said. “I don’t think we will study what India do too much.”

Trescothick explained that England’s strategy is to maintain a level-headed approach, regardless of the outcome. “We don’t get too down when we have bad days, we don’t get too high when we have good days,” he said. “You just have to stay level and recognize what you can do better.”

Despite England’s struggles, Trescothick identified some positive aspects of their performance. He praised Zak Crawley’s batting in the first session, but acknowledged that the team lacked partnerships to build a substantial total.

“We had some good things – the way we played up until lunch when the ball swung around more than we expected, Crawley getting that score,” Trescothick said. “We just didn’t get those partnerships going to get a big score and put the total on the board we needed to.”

Trescothick admitted that Day 1 was challenging for England, but expressed confidence in the team’s ability to bounce back. “It was a challenging day, no doubt about that,” he said. “Hopefully we come back and improve.”

After a brief hiatus, Zadran was recalled to the Afghanistan side for the T20Is at the Asian Games in October 2023. He played a pivotal role in Afghanistan’s victories over Sri Lanka and Pakistan, scoring 51 and 39 respectively. The final against India ended in a no-result due to rain, with India claiming the gold medal as the higher-ranked team.

Zadran’s international debut came in Afghanistan’s first official ODI against Scotland in April 2009, where he opened the batting and scored a quickfire 45 off 28 balls. His T20I debut followed in February 2010, in Afghanistan’s second game in the format.

One of Zadran’s career highlights was his half-century against India at the T20 World Cup in 2010, Afghanistan’s maiden World Cup appearance. He also played a crucial role in Afghanistan’s victory over Zimbabwe in the first round of the T20 World Cup in 2016.

Zadran’s retirement marks the end of an era for Afghanistan cricket. He has been a consistent performer for his country, contributing significantly to their rise in international cricket. His experience and leadership will be missed by the team.

Mumbai Indians, after a disappointing start in the Delhi leg with a loss to Delhi Capitals, have bounced back with three victories in their subsequent five matches. They will be eager to maintain their momentum and consolidate their position in the standings. UP Warriorz, on the other hand, have struggled for consistency, winning only two of their six matches. They will be determined to turn their fortunes around and secure a much-needed victory.
