Nottingham Forest Fined £750,000 for VAR Official Criticism

Nottingham Forest has been penalized £750,000 and issued a caution for social media posts targeting VAR official Stuart Attwell in April. The club’s defense that their remarks did not damage the game’s reputation was rejected by an independent regulatory commission.

The controversy arose from a match against Everton, where Forest felt they were denied three penalties. Their official Twitter account released a statement expressing dissatisfaction with the decisions, specifically mentioning their previous concerns to the PGMOL about Attwell’s Luton fan status. The statement hinted at further action by the club.

Forest has not commented on the penalty. They had requested VAR audio from the match, which PGMOL provided. The club also suggested considering “contextual” rivalries when assigning referees and VAR officials, but this was not adopted in the season’s criteria.

On the same day as Forest’s charges, referee analyst Mark Clattenburg left the club after receiving a formal warning from the FA for his comments about Attwell. Manager Nuno Espirito Santo and defender Neco Williams also faced disciplinary action for their remarks on the refereeing. Nuno received a suspended one-match touchline ban, a £40,000 fine, and a conduct warning, while Williams was fined £24,000 and warned.

The incident highlights the ongoing debate about VAR and the role of social media in football. Forest’s actions have drawn criticism for potentially undermining the authority of match officials, while the club maintains that they were simply expressing their concerns. The FA’s decision to impose a significant fine and caution serves as a warning to other clubs about the consequences of inappropriate social media behavior.

Klopp's Move to Red Bull Sparks Outrage Among Dortmund Fans

Klopp’s Move to Red Bull Sparks Outrage Among Dortmund Fans

Borussia Dortmund fans are reeling from the news that former coach Jurgen Klopp will join Red Bull as head of football operations. Klopp, who led Dortmund to two Bundesliga titles and a German Cup during his seven-year tenure, has been a beloved figure in the city. However, his decision to join Red Bull, a company that owns several football clubs including Dortmund’s rival RB Leipzig, has sparked outrage among fans.

The Dortmund fanzine Schwatzgelb has accused Klopp of “tearing down” his reputation with his move to Red Bull. The magazine criticized Klopp’s self-proclaimed status as “the normal one,” comparing him to Jose Mourinho’s infamous declaration of being “a special one.” Schwatzgelb also accused Klopp of giving a “well-mannered middle finger” to Dortmund fans.

Klopp’s decision has also drawn criticism from other quarters. Some fans believe that RB Leipzig, founded in 2009, violates Germany’s 50+1 rule, which requires member control of clubs. Others have criticized Red Bull’s multi-club ownership model.

Despite the backlash, Klopp’s decision did not come as a complete surprise to Dortmund managing director Hans-Joachim Watzke. Watzke said that he and Klopp had discussed the move personally. Klopp has previously defended the Red Bull model, calling it a “football idea” rather than a “money idea.”

Former Manchester United coach Ralf Rangnick, who held the same position Klopp will take over in January, said he is excited to see what Klopp can contribute to Red Bull. However, it remains to be seen how Klopp’s move will be received by the wider football community.

AFC Reverses Decision on Al-Nassr-Esteghlal Match, Mohun Bagan to Appeal

Two days after declaring Mohun Bagan Super Giant as withdrawn from the Asian Champions League 2 (ACL2) for not traveling to Iran, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has reversed its decision regarding the match between Esteghlal FC and Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr. AFC has now instructed Esteghlal FC to find a “neutral” venue for the match, scheduled for October 22.

Mohun Bagan, who had appealed against AFC’s initial decision, is expected to cite this reversal in their appeal. “It does seem odd that Mohun Bagan were treated one way and Al-Nassr-Esteghlal another,” said a club official.

The decision to move the Esteghlal-Al-Nassr match out of Iran comes amid escalating conflict in West Asia. On October 1, Iran fired ballistic missiles at Israel, prompting concerns about the safety of traveling to the country.

Mohun Bagan had initially requested that their match against Esteghlal, scheduled for October 2 in Tabriz, Iran, be postponed or moved to a neutral venue. The club cited safety concerns raised by its players, who had signed a declaration expressing their reluctance to travel to Iran.

AFC initially responded by declaring Mohun Bagan as withdrawn from the tournament for failing to report for the match. However, the confederation’s decision regarding the Esteghlal-Al-Nassr match suggests a shift in its stance.

Mohun Bagan is now consulting lawyers and preparing to file an appeal against AFC’s decision. The club believes that the safety concerns raised by its players should have been taken into consideration.

The AFC’s decision to move the Esteghlal-Al-Nassr match out of Iran also affects another ACL2 match. The match between Tractor SC and Ravshan of Tajikistan, scheduled for November 7, will also be moved to a neutral venue.

Diego Maradona’s Legacy Lives On in Immersive Barcelona Exhibit

Argentine football legend Diego Maradona’s spirit is alive and well in an immersive exhibition currently underway in Barcelona. The “Diego Vive” (“Diego Lives” in English) exhibit transports visitors into the world of the late player, featuring a hologram of Maradona and a reconstruction of his childhood home.

After successful runs in Naples and Tel Aviv, the exhibition has arrived in Barcelona, where Maradona spent two injury-marred seasons with FC Barcelona in the early 1980s. Spread over 2,000 square meters in central Barcelona, the exhibit greets visitors with a hologram of a young Maradona adorned in a Boca Juniors jersey, the club where he won his only Argentine league title.

Visitors can immerse themselves in Maradona’s world by taking a penalty kick in his style or recreating his infamous “Hand of God” goal against England in the 1986 World Cup. The exhibition also showcases a collection of photos, an immersive video show narrating Maradona’s life story, and a reconstruction of his childhood home in the Villa Fiorito shanty town on the outskirts of Buenos Aires.

“When you are here, you feel again that Diego is next to you, and that is the idea, to feel him,” said Avelino Tamargo, one of the creators of the exhibition. The exhibit is supported by Maradona’s family, who lost him in 2020 at the age of 60 after a battle with addiction and health issues.

Maradona’s legacy extends beyond the football field. In Argentina, he is revered as a national hero, alongside Che Guevara and Eva Peron. His impact on the sport and his country continues to inspire generations.

Olmos’ collegiate career at the University of Southern California (USC) was marked by her exceptional leadership and sportsmanship. Despite her initial struggles in singles, Olmos found success in doubles. In 2019, she partnered with Desirae Krawczyk to win the WTA event in Nottingham. As more ITF tournaments were canceled due to the pandemic, Olmos dedicated herself to doubles. In 2021, she teamed up with Sharon Fichman to achieve notable victories, including a win in Rome and a quarterfinal appearance at the Australian Open.

Olmos’ doubles ranking soared into the Top 20 by the end of 2021, and she has since cracked the Top 10, peaking at No. 6 in 2023. Lewandowski Defends Ronaldo's On-Field Behavior, Praises His Ambition

Lewandowski Defends Ronaldo’s On-Field Behavior, Praises His Ambition

Robert Lewandowski, the Polish striker and Barcelona superstar, has expressed his admiration for Cristiano Ronaldo’s unwavering ambition and desire for the game, despite the Portuguese legend’s recent on-field outbursts.

Ronaldo’s move to Saudi Pro League side Al Nassr in December 2022 has drawn attention to his behavior, which has been criticized by rival fans and pundits alike. However, Lewandowski believes that Ronaldo’s anger and nervousness on the field are a testament to his exceptional drive.

“As for Cristiano, he has written many pages of history and has always raised the bar for everyone around him,” Lewandowski said. “Although he has achieved everything or almost everything, and he is 39 years old and approaching 40, it is clear that he has ambition, as he gets angry and nervous, and this shows his great ambition.”

Lewandowski emphasized that Ronaldo’s continued goal-scoring prowess, despite his age, is a testament to his exceptional talent. “Regardless of age, his numbers keep going up and not the other way around. Of course, he is an exception, and there are very few exceptions like him,” he added.

The Poland striker also acknowledged the challenge of facing Portugal, who boast several talented players alongside Ronaldo. “I fully understand what Cristiano Ronaldo has achieved throughout his career, and how he has impacted the history of football with his achievements and numbers,” Lewandowski said. “But when it comes to the match, I see it as a match between two teams, and we will need to play as a team to stand up to Portugal.”

Lewandowski’s comments highlight the respect and admiration that exists between two of the greatest players of their generation, despite their contrasting styles and personalities. Ronaldo’s unwavering ambition and Lewandowski’s clinical finishing ability continue to inspire and captivate fans around the world.

Messi Pays Tribute to Retiring Legend Iniesta: “The Ball Will Miss You”

Argentine football legend Lionel Messi has penned a heartfelt tribute to his former Barcelona teammate Andres Iniesta, who recently announced his retirement from professional football. Messi and Iniesta were instrumental in Barcelona’s golden era, where they dominated European football and won numerous trophies together.

Their on-field chemistry was impeccable, with Iniesta often providing pinpoint passes to Messi, who would then convert them into goals. Iniesta, who scored the World Cup-winning goal for Spain in 2010, retired on October 8, a number associated with him throughout his career as he wore the number 8 jersey.

Messi, an eight-time Ballon d’Or winner, took to Instagram to express his admiration for Iniesta, with whom he shared countless memorable moments on the field. “One of the teammates with the most magic and one of the ones I enjoyed playing with the most,” Messi wrote. “Andres Iniesta, the ball will miss you and so will we! I wish you the best, always. You are a phenomenon.”

Iniesta left Barcelona in 2018 after making 674 appearances for the club, having come through their La Masia academy. Messi and Iniesta played together at La Masia and went on to conquer European football after breaking into the Barcelona senior team.

There were rumors that Iniesta might reunite with Messi at Inter Miami, where several of their former Barcelona teammates, including Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets, and Luis Suarez, currently play. However, that move did not materialize.

Meanwhile, Major League Soccer is eagerly anticipating Messi’s MLS Cup playoff debut, although his Inter Miami CF team’s opponent is yet to be determined. Inter Miami, who clinched their first Supporters’ Shield with a 3-2 win against the Columbus Crew, will play their first postseason match on October 25 at their home ground in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

The full MLS Cup playoff bracket will be announced on October 19, the final day of the regular season. Messi, now 37, joined MLS in July 2023 after a successful stint with Paris Saint-Germain. Inter Miami won the League Cup title but failed to qualify for the MLS Cup playoffs. The Supporters’ Shield is Messi’s 46th career trophy.
