Ronaldo will square off against Messi in a friendly clash

Lionel Messi’s Paris St. Germain will play a friendly against an all-star team comprising players from Saudi clubs Al-Nassr and Al-Hilal. The match will see Ronaldo and Messi go against each other on January 19 in Riyadh.

Qatar-owned PSG will travel to Doha on January 17 before moving on to the Saudi capital for the match at the King Fahd Stadium, which will see Messi and Ronaldo renew their rivalry. Their rivalry grew over nine years when they came up against each other in Spain when Messi was starring for Barcelona and Ronaldo for Real Madrid.

Ronaldo moved to Al-Nassr in a shocking move that saw him become the most expensive player of all time with a deal worth around $200 million per year. While his long-time competitor recently lifted the 2022 FIFA World Cup trophy cementing his status as one of the game’s greats.

Meanwhile, Ronaldo hasn’t made his debut for the Saudi club. It is reported the superstar will be available for the friendly game. The game will broadcast live on PSG’s social media platforms for the benefit of fans.

Benfica are under investigation for 'match fixing' after hacked emails were accessed

Portuguese club Benfica are under investigation for match fixing

As per reports, Portuguese club Benfica is currently under investigation for match-fixing. The reports say the investigation has come about as a result of hacked emails being accessed by prosecutors and relates to a four-year period between 2016 and 2020.

The investigation comes just a year-and-a-half after the club’s president, Luis Filipe Vieira, was forced to resign after getting arrested on tax evasion, aggravated fraud, forgery and money laundering charges.

Former Benfica, AC Milan and Portugal star Rui Costa, who became the club’s vice-president in 2020 but took over the president’s post when Vieira resigned, is also involved in the investigation, as per the reports.

Benfica released a statement, saying, “Taking into account the news made public today, Sport Lisboa e Benfica – Futebol SAD confirms that it appeared in court on January 3, as well as, among others, the members of the Board of Directors from 2016 to 2020 and who are currently in office.”

The club further added, “Benfica SAD will not comment further as the trial is under legal secrecy. Benfica expresses its total willingness to collaborate with the competent authorities, as has always happened up to now.”

Romeo Beckham

Beckham Jr. joins Premier League side Brentford on loan

Former Manchester United and Real Madrid legend David Beckham’s son, Romeo Beckham, has joined English Premier League side Brentford on loan. The youngster who played for Inter Miami II will appear for Brentford B till the end of the season.

“Brentford are delighted to announce the signing of Romeo Beckham from Inter Miami CF on loan until the end of the 2022-23 season,” the club said.

“The 20-year-old will join Neil MacFarlane’s B team for the rest of the campaign to continue his development as he makes the temporary switch from the MLS club. The move is subject to international clearance.”

The new recruit said he was relishing his opportunity, telling Brentford’s website: “I’m very proud and very happy to be here. He further added, “I came here at the start to keep fit during the off-season. The chance then came to come on loan here, and I’ve never been so excited.”

The right winger has appeared for Fort Lauderdale CF and Inter Miami II and played 6 and 20 games, respectively. He has scored 2 goals for Inter Miami II in the 2022 MLS Next Pro season.

Romeo Beckham’s dad David Beckham also started his journey the same way. He was loaned to Brimsdown Rovers’s youth team.

Breaking: Daley Blind signs a short-term deal with Bayern Munich

After much speculation, Netherlands international Daley Blind has made a shocking move to Bundesliga champs Bayern Munich. The Netherlands defender had been heavily linked with Royal Antwerp, but he jumped at the chance to join Bayern.

“I can hardly wait to play here. We’ve got the most important part of the season coming up, where it’s about titles – and a club like Bayern can win every trophy. The hunger for titles here at the club was key in my decision. I hope I can bring my experience to help the team. I’ll give everything for Bayern Munich,” Blind said in a release from Bayern Munich.

“We’re delighted that Daley is joining our team. Daley is a versatile defender, capable of playing on the left or in the centre. He has great international experience and leadership qualities. I’m sure he’ll help us,” sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic said.

Blind left his former club Ajax unceremoniously. Across two spells at Ajax, he made over 300 appearances and won the Eredivisie on seven occasions – only Johan Cruyff and Sjaak Swart won more league titles with the Amsterdam giants with eight apiece. After knowing that one of his experienced players is leaving the club, Ajax CEO Edwin van der Sar said, “I hope he can find another club to end his successful career with.”

Blind will be a massive boost for Bayern, with injuries to key players such as Lucas Hernandez and Manuel Neuer already ahead of their return to league action. Therefore, he could prove a strong addition to replace Hernandez.

Saudi club Al-Nassr finally signs Ronaldo on a free transfer

After much speculation, Portugal superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has finally confirmed his next destination. The former Manchester United star has been signed by Saudi club Al- Nassr on a two-year deal worth over €200 million. The contract will see CR7 play in the Saudi Pro League till 2025.

Al-Nassr announced the signing via Twitter. The club tweeted, ” History in the making. This is a signing that will not only inspire our club to achieve even greater success but inspire our league, our nation and future generations, boys and girls to be the best version of themselves. Welcome @Cristiano to your new home @AlNassrFC.”

After the announcement was made public, Cristiano was quoted as saying, “I can’t wait to discover a new football league in a different country.” He further added, “The vision with which Al Nassr operates is very inspiring, and I am delighted to join my teammates so that together we can help the team achieve greater success.”

Ronaldo heads to the Gulf after a year that saw him relegated to the bench for Portugal and cut adrift by Manchester United. The club parted ways with the Portuguese star after the veteran forward gave an explosive TV interview in which he said he felt “betrayed” by the club and had no respect for coach Erik ten Hag.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner’s move is being criticised by a lot of his fans. In a time when his long-time competitor Lionel Messi is scaling new heights, Cristiano Ronaldo’s move to Al-Nassr is seen as an end to his numero uno status.

Cody Gakpo signs for Liverpool

Liverpool beat Man United to get Cody Gakpo from PSV Eindhoven

In a dramatic turn of events, Liverpool has signed Netherlands winger Cody Gakpo from PSV Eindhoven. The player, a key target for Manchester United, has been signed for a record transfer fee.

As per ESPN, the fee of the deal is around £37 million plus add-ons, up to £50m potential package. The sides are close to finalising his arrival in the January transfer window. PSV did not disclose the deal’s value, but general manager Marcel Brands said it would be a “record transfer” for the club.

The Dutch club said in a statement: “PSV and Liverpool FC have reached an agreement on the proposed transfer of Cody Gakpo. The 23-year-old attacker will leave for England imminently, where he will be subjected to the necessary formalities ahead of the transfer completion.”

The signing will be great for Liverpool since Luis Diaz is facing a severe injury after aggravating a knee injury during a midseason training break in Dubai. Also, their star signing, Darwin Nunez, is going through a rough patch.

Cody Gakpo has been a key player for PSV Eindhoven. The star has scored 36 goals in just 106 appearances for the Dutch club. Also, the winger impressed during the recently concluded 2022 FIFA World Cup, scoring 3 goals in 5 games.

Liverpool has had a torrid time, with the team currently in 6th position in the English Premier League. With the latest acquisition, the team might see a great improvement in performance.

Robert Lewandowski

Robert Lewandowski selects this player to win Ballon d’Or 2023

Barcelona’s star player Robert Lewandoski feels Lionel Messi’s World Cup win has made him a clear winner at the next Ballon d’Or ceremony. In his final World Cup campaign, Messi led the Albiceleste to glory in Qatar, scoring twice in the final before his side beat Kylian Mbappe and France in the penalty shootout.

Lewandowski said: “There is maybe one more player who plays for the same club, but there is only one World Cup that decides who is going to win it this season, and Leo is now in the top position for sure because of what he has achieved which means everything to him. He now can enjoy it.”

Lionel Messi was in supreme form at the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The PSG star scored 7 goals in the tournament, winning the Golden Ball.

As per reports, there was some talk surrounding Messi’s return to Barcelona. Upon being quizzed regarding the same, Lewandowski said, “It’s not up to me. But compared to other times, he is now the footballer that any striker would dream of playing alongside him.”

However, 90min understands PSG are convinced Messi will stay in France and sign a new contract, though the Argentina forward is not looking to commit for more than 18 months.

The best XI of 2022 FIFA World Cup

The best XI of the 2022 FIFA World Cup

Four weeks, 64 games, and in the end, it came down to a set of penalties to cement the new World Champions. Yes, the dreams of millions have turned into a reality. Lionel Messi, the greatest of all time, won his first World Cup with his set of Argentine soldiers. And what a game of football it was, as English commentator Peter Drury quoted, “In the end, all I can say is thank you”. It was a night of two no.10s dominating from both ends. However, the world celebrated Messi lifting the only trophy missing from his cabinet in his last World Cup match.

While the world celebrated Messi completing the football, some lovers of the game felt bad for the 23-year-old Mbappe. The PSG starlet left his soul on the pitch as he grabbed a hat trick to keep France in the game till the end. The winner was decided via a penalty shootout in which Emi Martinez emerged as a hero. Argentina added their 3rd World Cup to their trophy cabinet while paying all their respect to the late Maradonna during celebrations.
World Cup 2022, which was surrounded by controversies before it began, turned out to be one of the best footballing tournaments ever. The likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar Jr, Luka Modric, and Robert Lewandowski, alongside Lionel Messi, featured in their last World Cup.

World Cup 2022 was dominated by the underdogs who made the tournament better. Teams like Morocco, Japan, and even Saudi Arabia gave us one of the tournament’s best matches. Players like Yassine Bounou and Josko Gvardiol made a name for themselves with back-to-back world-class performances. Let’s have a look at the best XI of FIFA World Cup 2022.

FIFA World Cup 2022 Best XI

Goalkeeper – Yassine Bounou (Morocco)

Sevilla’s goalkeeper was the leader from the back for Morocco. Yassine Bounou, also known as ‘Bono’ dominated his area as he emerged as one of the favourites in World Cup 2022. Besides his exceptional performance, Bono was also a motivating factor for his team. Bono carried his side to the quarter-finals as he came big against Spain in the penalty shoot-out and later denied every opportunity created by Portugal in the quarter-final to reach the semi-finals against France. Morocco didn’t conceive a single goal from the opponent in World Cup 2022 till they faced France in the semi-finals.

Right-back – Achraf Hakimi (Morocco)

Achraf Hakimi penned one of the best stories in this year’s World Cup. Born and bought up in Spain, Hakimi rejected the opportunity to represent the 2010 World Cup winners and opted to play for Morocco. The former Real Madrid full-back then eliminated Spain and Portugal with a series of brilliant performances for his side in the world’s biggest sporting event. Remember the winning penalty in the Round of 16 penalty shoot-out against Spain and the celebration after that.

Centre-back – John Stones (England)

England looked like a solid team in the World Cup until they came across France in the competition’s quarter-finals. However, Gareth Southgate’s side put on a tough fight in which John Stones played a huge part. Stones is one of the top defenders in the business, and he displayed his quality at the back for the Three Lions in World Cup 2022 as well. Stones has a knack for playing progressive passes during attacks as well, which makes him more crucial for his teams.

Centre-back – Josko Gvardiol (Croatia)

The Croatia national football team has already gained everyone’s respect with their historic runs in the back-to-back FIFA World Cups. The 2018 finalists made it to the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup after getting the better of Brazil in the quarter-final stage. Josko Gvardiol was their main man in the back. The masked centre-back stood tall for the Croatians and made it to the best XI of World Cup 2022. Gvardiol also scored a goal against Morocco to seal the 3rd place for Morocco.

Left-back – Ivan Perisic (Croatia)

Ivan Perisic continued to shine in any given position for Croatia as he does it so well for Tottenham. Perisic can prosper anywhere on the pitch; he is as brilliant of an all-rounder as it gets. Perisic had a total of three assists and a goal in the 2022 World Cup. Adding to that, Perisic has directly been involved in a total of 11 FIFA World Cup goals in the last three tournaments, which include six goals and five assists.

Right midfield – Antoine Griezmann (France)

Antoine Griezmann was arguably the second-best player for France in the 2022 World Cup, only behind Kylian Mbappe. Griezmann took the new role handed to him by Didier Deschamps with both hands and fulfilled it perfectly. The Atletico Madrid star, who has spent most of his career as a striker, adapted to the mid-field role quite easily. Griezmann surely had a good campaign.

Central midfield – Sofyan Amrabat (Morocco)

Sofyan Amrabat is one of the most talked about midfielders after the World Cup 2022. His performance against Spain, in which he was all over the Barcelona midfield trio Gavi, Pedri, and Busquets, gave him the limelight of his life. Amrabat is now being linked with Liverpool as he has a very good possibility of joining the Merseyside club in the winter transfer window.

Left midfield – Luka Modric (Croatia)

37 years old and still the best midfielder of World Cup 2022. Luka Modric can never get old, and this year’s World Cup was an example of it. The Croatian skipper wore his heart on his sleeves as he carried his side to the 3rd spot in his last and final World Cup. Football will miss the magician from Madrid at the highest level of the game.

Right-wing – Lionel Messi (Argentina)

One of the best stories ever written in the history of any sport is Lionel Messi winning the World Cup. The little master scored in each of the knock-out games, including two goals in the finals against France to lift the auspicious World Cup trophy. Lionel Messi won the golden ball award as he scored a total of 7 goals and had 3 assists under his belt in this year’s edition of the FIFA World Cup.

Centre-forward – Richarlison (Brazil)

Brazil was the favourite to win the 2022 Qatar World Cup before their shocking exit against Croatia in the quarter-finals. Tottenham’s Richarlison was selected and played ahead of the likes of Gabriel Jesus and Roberto Firmino, and it turned out to be the right decision by Brazil’s manager Tite. Richarlison displayed some outstanding skills during the entire campaign, as he scored a total of 3 goals.

Left wing – Kylian Mbappe (France)

Kylian Mbappe is the highest goal-scorer of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, with a total of 8 goals under his belt, which included a hat trick in the finals. Even most of his doubters have turned into a fan after seeing Mbappe’s class in the 2022 World Cup. Mbappe won the Golden Boot of the 2022 World Cup and was arguably the tournament’s best player alongside Lionel Messi.

Manchester United

Man United advance to quarterfinals of EFL Cup after thrashing Burnley

Club football is back!! After a satisfying end to the World Cup, club football in England is back. Man United and Burnley locked horns in EFL Cup yesterday, with the English club thrashing Burnley to advance to the quarterfinals of the tournament.

The match began with Eriksen getting on the scoresheet in the 27th minute before Rashford doubled the advantage in the second half of United’s first game since the World Cup. Manchester United could have doubled the lead when Burnley goalkeeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell saved Anthony Martial’s shot. Burnley got a chance to equalise, but Marcus Rashford stepped in and made it 2-0 with his individual effort.

Man United’s manager, Erik ten Hag, praised Marcus Rashford for his incredible performance. He said, “I think he’s on a very good level. His performances are improving a lot, I would say, from game to game. He’s a continued threat today but also many other games in this season, he’s scored already a lot of goals. Also, there’s a lot of defending work, don’t forget that. So I’m really happy with his performances and I hope but I expect him to keep going in this attitude and in this performance level.”

In other news, Nottingham Forest also reached the quarterfinals after a 4-1 win over second-division Blackburn. Elsewhere, third-tier Charlton caused an upset as they defeated Premier League club, Brighton.

Famous People who prefer Ronaldo Over Messi:

1) Pele

“Today, the best player in the world is Cristiano Ronaldo,” the Brazilian superstar said in 2020. “I think he’s the best because he’s more consistent, but you can’t forget about [Lionel] Messi, of course, but he’s not a striker.”

2) Roberto Carlos

“I watch him [Cristiano] train every day, and the way he works is exciting,” the Brazilian said. “He wants to improve every day. That’s the difference with Messi. “Leo is a phenomenon, but that side of Cristiano, of training, professionalism, focus, motivation, success… Cristiano has an advantage over all the others.”

3) Sir Alex Ferguson

“Now, don’t get me wrong, Messi is a fantastic player; it’s like he’s wearing slippers when he controls the ball,” Ferguson said. “But here, for me, is the difference. Messi is a Barcelona player. “Ronaldo could play for Stockport County and score a hat-trick. He just wanted to be the best in the world.”

4) Zinedine Zidane

“Cristiano is the best,” the Frenchman said. “Messi is his rival, and it’s the rivalry everyone wants to see. “But Ronaldo is phenomenal. There are no words to describe him. He is much better than me, even though I had a great career. He’s the greatest of all time.”

5) Kylian Mbappe

“From one year to the next, my choice changes between Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, even if I have to admit to picking Ronaldo more often,” the Paris Saint-Germain forward said. “I loved him when I was younger.”

6) Ryan Giggs

“Well, obviously, I played with Cristiano so I’m going to go with Cristiano. “But they’re both two great players. We’re living in an era where you’re seeing true legends at their best going head-to-head each season. “It’s special to see, but Cristiano has done it in Portugal; he’s obviously done it in England, and he’s done it in La Liga and also on the national front with Portugal as well. “I think Cristiano, for me, just pips it, but only just.”

7) Iker Casillas

“I’d choose Cristiano over Messi because he’s a player who gives us so much every season, and he’s a player I spend time with every day.”

Lionel Messi

Lionel Messi made his Barcelona debut on October 16, 2004, against arch-rivals Espanyol; the rest is history. Messi is unlike any player to grace the beautiful game. He is an alien in form of a human, and that is enough said about his greatness. Lionel Messi spent 17 years in Barcelona and, in that span, scored a total of 520 goals in just 474 appearances. The Argentine has won a record number of 7 Ballon d’Ors, two more than Cristiano Ronaldo.

Lionel Messi has won two trebles in his glorious career. Lionel Messi won his first Ballon d’Or in 2010 and later went on to win 3 more at a trot. Messi scored 91 goals in the calendar year 2012, a record which is yet to be broken, or we can safely say, will never be broken. Lionel Messi is more than his goals; he is also a playmaker. He contributes more to the game than his goals, which sets him apart from any other player in the world. Lionel Messi won the Copa America with Argentina, his first major international trophy. Messi joined PSG in 2021.

  • LaLiga: 10

Famous footballers who prefer Messi Over Ronaldo:

1) Diego Maradona:

“I can’t remember having seen Lionel Messi play badly. “I prefer Messi to Cristiano Ronaldo, but I acknowledge that the latter is an animal. Football history will remember Messi. Football has given him

a lot, as much as he has given the sport and to win a World Cup, in my opinion, wouldn’t bring him anything else.”

2) Paul Scholes:

“Messi [is the best], but Ronaldo is brilliant,” the former England midfielder said. “Ronaldo is sensational at what he does, with pace and power. “He scores; he takes free-kicks. But as an all-round footballer, Messi – wow, his passing – he has absolutely everything.” “I think about the great players with whom I have shared a pitch: Eric Cantona, Zinedine Zidane, Pirlo, Xavi, Cristiano Ronaldo – and the greatest of them all is Messi.”

3) David Beckham:

“They have similarities in their technical skills and talent, and it is amazing for football to have them both present, but Messi is simply the best player in the world,” the former England captain commented. “He [Messi] is alone in his class as a player; it is impossible that there is another like him. He, like Cristiano Ronaldo, who is not at his level, are both above the rest.”

4) Thiery Henry:

“I played alongside Leo, so there’s my answer,” the Frenchman said. “I have an enormous amount of respect for Cristiano as someone who has maintained such a high level for several years. “It’s one thing to have a good season and then have another four years later, but to keep up with that level for consecutive years is something else. “People realize it, of course, but I feel like we still don’t grasp the real measure of what these two are doing. In the future, people will look back in awe at the continuity, the goals, and the pressure that comes along with doing this for so long. “So I’m full of respect for Ronaldo, but I played with Leo and had extraordinary moments with him; we lost and won together, so that is all I have to say about Leo.”

5) Johan Cruyff

“Messi is much more a team player than Cristiano is. “He scores but also produces many assists. For me, as a player, Messi is better. There is a big difference between being just a great goalscorer and being the best player.

“Every person that understands football knows this. It’s absolutely ridiculous to me that some people actually think Messi isn’t the best. “This isn’t about Cristiano at all. He’s a fantastic player, one of the best goalscorers ever. This is about how ridiculously good Messi is.”

6) Zlatan Ibrahimovic

“I think Messi is one of a kind,” the Swede said in 2016. “What he’s doing, I don’t know if we will see another player do the things that he does. “It is different [with Ronaldo] because he is the result of hard training. It is not natural.”

Lionel Messi vs Cristiano Ronaldo: Who is the G.O.A.T.?

While it is impossible to name one of them as the bigger GOAT, according to us, Ronaldo edges past Messi. With all due respect to Messi, Ronaldo has won leagues in 3 different countries, has more goals than the Argentine and has won more Champions League titles than him.
