Rafael Nadal’s Coach Not Ready for His Final Farewell

Rafael Nadal’s illustrious tennis career is set to culminate in Malaga on Tuesday, as he prepares to play his final match at the Davis Cup Finals against the Netherlands. Nadal’s coach, Carlos Moya, has expressed mixed emotions about the impending farewell.

Moya, who joined Nadal’s team in 2016, acknowledged that he has “fully accepted” Nadal’s decision to retire, which stems from a prolonged battle with injuries. However, he admitted that he is not yet ready to fully comprehend the reality of Nadal’s last match.

“I’m not prepared for today being Rafa’s last day as an active player,” Moya said. “That’s something I can’t wrap my head around.”

Despite the emotional weight of the occasion, Nadal has emphasized that his focus remains on helping Spain advance in the Davis Cup. “I am not here for retiring, I’m here to try and help the team,” he stated.

Nadal, a four-time Davis Cup champion, boasts an impressive 29-1 record in singles in the competition. He has not lost a match since 2004.

Moya expressed his admiration for Nadal’s unwavering determination and resilience. “It’s not a sudden thing,” he said of Nadal’s retirement decision. “It’s something he has carefully considered, we’ve talked a lot about it.”

As Nadal prepares for his final match, Moya expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to have witnessed and contributed to the Spaniard’s extraordinary career. “My hope and excitement are to be here until Sunday,” he said. “Everything has its time, and we are here to celebrate Rafa and thank him for all he has given to so many people.”
