Javelin thrower Sachin Yadav continues to impress in the All India Police Athletics Championships, setting a new meet record and achieving a personal best of 84.21 meters. This performance places him sixth in the list of India’s all-time best javelin throwers, behind Olympic medallist Neeraj Chopra.
Yadav, representing Uttar Pradesh Police, broke the previous meet record of 79.68 meters set by Satbir Singh of Punjab Police in 1994. He improved on the record twice, first throwing 83.43 meters and then following it up with 84.21 meters.
The 24-year-old Yadav has been in excellent form this year, winning silver at the National Open meet in Bengaluru with a throw of 79.80 meters and achieving a distance of 82.69 meters at the Indian Grand Prix-3 in Bengaluru. He first touched the 80-meter mark in 2023 with a throw of 80.27 meters at a meet in Ranchi.
Yadav’s goal is to qualify for the world athletics championships in Japan next year, which requires an entry standard of 85.50 meters. He can also qualify through world rankings.
In addition to Yadav’s record-breaking performance, three other meet records were broken at the championships. Prince Kumar from Uttar Pradesh Police smashed a 46-year-old mark in the 5,000 meters, while Athira Somaraj of Kerala Police set a new record in the high jump. Rimpi Burgohain of Assam Rifles also set a new record in the women’s long jump.
