After six years into the making, the new format of the UEFA Champions League will finally be in effect from the 2024-25 season. UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin announced the news on uefa.com. He stated, “UEFA has clearly shown that we are fully committed to respecting the fundamental values of sport and to defending the key principle of open competitions, with qualification based on sporting merit, fully in line with the values and solidarity-based European sports model.” 

Additionally, he said, “I am really pleased that it was a unanimous decision of the UEFA Executive Committee, with the European Club Association, European Leagues and national associations all agreeing with the proposal made. Another proof that European football is more united than ever.”

Increased Number of Teams:

  • Increase from 32 to 36 Teams: The tournament will expand from 32 to 36 teams. This expansion will allow more clubs from different countries to participate, increasing diversity and representation across European leagues.   • Additional Spots: The four additional spots will likely be allocated based on a combination of domestic league performance, historical performances in European competitions, and other criteria set by UEFA.

Single League Format

  • Unified League System: Instead of the traditional group stage format with eight groups of four teams, all 36 teams will compete in a single league table. This is a significant shift from the previous format, which divided teams into groups, with each team playing against the others in their group.
  • Number of Matches: Under the new format, teams will play eight matches in the new league phase (former group stage). They will no longer play three opponents twice – home and away – but will instead face fixtures against eight different teams, playing half of those matches at home and half of them away. To determine the eight different opponents, the teams will initially be ranked in four seeding pots. Each team will then be drawn to play two opponents from each of these pots, playing one match against a team from each pot at home, and one away. This change will increase the number of matches in the early stages of the competition, ensuring that each team has a diverse set of opponents from various leagues across Europe. This aims to increase the excitement and competitiveness of the tournament.

Qualification for Knockout Rounds

  • Top Eight Teams Qualify Directly: After all teams have played their eight matches, the top eight teams in the league table will automatically qualify for the Round of 16.
  • Playoff Round: Teams ranked 9th to 24th in the league table will enter a two-legged playoff round. The winners of these playoffs will secure the remaining eight spots in the Round of 16. Teams that finish 25th or lower will be eliminated, with no access to the UEFA Europa League. This playoff system adds an extra layer of excitement and competition to the tournament, ensuring that every match in the league stage has significance and that more teams have a chance to progress. 

In the knockout phase, the teams that finish between 9th and 16th will be seeded in the knockout phase play-off draw, meaning they will face a team placed 17th to 24th – with, in principle, the return leg at home. The eight clubs which prevail in the knockout phase play-offs will then progress to the round of 16, where they will each face one of the top-eight finishers, who will be seeded in the round of 16.

  • More Excitement and Competitiveness: The new format aims to make the tournament more thrilling by providing more matches with higher stakes early on. Instead of the predictability of the group stages, the league format creates more dynamic matchups and keeps more teams in contention for longer.
  • Increased Revenue and Viewership: More matches mean more broadcasting rights and ticket sales, which is likely to increase revenue for UEFA, clubs, and broadcasters. The broader range of matchups is also designed to attract more viewers, particularly in the early stages of the competition.

Diego Maradona Negligence Trial Postponed to March 2025

An Argentine court has postponed the criminal trial of seven medical professionals accused of negligence in the death of football legend Diego Maradona to March 2025. The trial was initially scheduled to begin next month but has now been rescheduled to start on March 11, 2025.

Maradona, widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all time, died in November 2020 at the age of 60 while recovering from brain surgery. He had a history of cocaine and alcohol addiction.

The medical professionals facing trial include neurosurgeon Leopoldo Luque, psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov, and six nurses. They are accused of providing “reckless” and “deficient” home treatment to Maradona.

Prosecutors allege that the medical team failed to provide adequate care to Maradona, who was found dead in bed two weeks after undergoing brain surgery. A panel of medical experts concluded that Maradona would have had a better chance of survival if he had received proper treatment in a hospital setting.

The medical professionals face prison sentences ranging from eight to 25 years if convicted. One of the nurses, Gisela Dahiana Madrid, has requested a separate jury trial, which is scheduled to begin on October 2, 2023.

The postponement of the trial has been met with mixed reactions. Some believe that it is necessary to ensure a fair trial, while others argue that it is a further delay in seeking justice for Maradona’s family.

India Defender Anwar Ali, East Bengal, and Delhi FC Challenge AIFF Suspension

India defender Anwar Ali, along with his current club East Bengal and parent club Delhi FC, have filed a writ petition with the Delhi High Court challenging the four-month suspension imposed on the player by the All India Football Federation (AIFF). The suspension stems from Anwar’s alleged “illegal termination” of his four-year contract with Mohun Bagan.

The AIFF’s Players Status Committee found Anwar guilty of breaching his contract and ordered him, East Bengal, and Delhi FC to pay a hefty compensation of Rs 12.90 crore to Mohun Bagan. The compensation includes Rs 8.40 crore for the residual value of the contract, Rs 2 crore paid to Delhi FC under a loan agreement, and Rs 2.50 crore for other damages.

Delhi FC owner Ranjit Bajaj expressed concern over the suspension, stating that it would deprive Anwar of valuable playing time. “How can we let the player lose out on matches in the coming days? You can get money back, but you can’t get the matches back once they are played,” he said.

East Bengal’s top official, Debabrata Sarkar, echoed Bajaj’s sentiments, emphasizing the importance of Anwar’s participation in the upcoming Indian Super League (ISL). “We have approached the Delhi HC to ensure that Anwar can play until the AIFF’s Appeals Committee makes a decision on the matter,” Sarkar said. “The player’s career should not be affected at all cost.”

The AIFF’s Players Status Committee also banned East Bengal and Delhi FC from registering players for two transfer windows for their involvement in Anwar’s contract breach. The committee ruled that all three parties are jointly liable for the compensation amount.

Anwar’s transfer to East Bengal sparked controversy in Kolkata, with Mohun Bagan challenging the move and filing a complaint with the AIFF. The 23-year-old defender played a crucial role in Mohun Bagan’s ISL Shield-winning campaign last season, scoring three goals and providing one assist in 26 games.

The Delhi High Court is expected to hear the writ petition on Friday. The outcome of the case will have significant implications for Anwar’s career and the future of player contracts in Indian football.

Arsenal co-chairman Josh Kroenke said he was delighted with the new deal. “Mikel is a dynamic and passionate manager, who is relentless in the pursuit of excellence,” he said. “He has a deep understanding of Arsenal’s values, and since joining us as head coach, he has taken the team to another level in an Arsenal way.”

Arteta, who had been working as an assistant coach under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, replaced compatriot Unai Emery as Arsenal boss in December 2019. He won the FA Cup in his first season in charge — his first silverware as a manager.

Arsenal have finished as runners-up to City in the Premier League for the past two seasons. Last term, they went agonisingly close to lifting the trophy for the first time since 2004 before being pipped by City on the last day of the season.

Arteta’s men, who face north London rivals Tottenham on Sunday, are currently fourth in the table after two wins and a draw. They begin their Champions League campaign next week against Atalanta.

Arteta, who played 150 times for Arsenal and captained the side, called for calm last month regarding his contract situation, insisting his focus had been on the transfer window. “We are on it and we will take care of that in the right moment,” said Arteta, who had previously been linked with Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona.

“I don’t think anybody has to panic. I am in the place where I want to be and am really happy. Hopefully the club thinks the same thing and the players I work with, who in my opinion are the most important ones.”

Arsenal strengthened in the summer transfer window, bringing in a clutch of players including Raheem Sterling, Mikel Merino and Riccardo Calafiori. There are still questions over whether they have enough firepower to overhaul champions City after their failure to sign a striker to compete with inconsistent Germany forward Kai Havertz.

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur has been charged by the Football Association (FA) for an alleged misconduct breach related to a comment he made about teammate Son Heung-min on Uruguayan television.

During an interview on Canal 10 in June, Bentancur was asked for a Spurs player’s shirt. He responded by saying, “Sonny’s? It could be Sonny’s cousin too as they all look the same.”

The comment sparked outrage, with British anti-discrimination charity Kick It Out receiving a “significant number” of complaints. Bentancur subsequently apologized to Son and Spurs skipper Hugo Lloris, acknowledging that he had “made a mistake.”

The FA has now charged Bentancur with an alleged breach of its rules in relation to a media interview. The statement from the FA reads:

“It’s alleged that the Tottenham midfielder has breached FA Rule E3.1 as he acted in an improper manner and/or used abusive and/or insulting words and/or brought the game into disrepute.

“It’s further alleged that this constitutes an ‘aggravated breach’ which is defined in FA Rule E3.2, as it included a reference, whether express or implied, to nationality and/or race and/or ethnic origin.”

Bentancur has until September 19 to respond to the charge. The FA’s investigation comes amid a wider crackdown on racism and discrimination in football. In 2020, former Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani was banned for three games and fined £100,000 for using the Spanish term “negrito” (small black person) in a social media post.

The FA’s decision to charge Bentancur sends a clear message that it will not tolerate any form of discrimination or abuse in the game. It remains to be seen how the case will be resolved, but it is likely that Bentancur will face a significant punishment if found guilty.

The incident took place in Barranquilla, Colombia, immediately after Argentina’s disappointing loss in the qualifying match. Jhonny Jackson, who works for Caracol Televisión and RCN Deportes, reported that he approached Martínez to film post-match reactions. Unexpectedly, he said that Martínez “slapped me,” highlighting the frustration of the goalkeeper after the team’s defeat.
