Tottenham's Bentancur Charged by FA for Racist Comment

Tottenham’s Bentancur Charged by FA for Racist Comment

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur has been charged by the Football Association (FA) for an alleged misconduct breach related to a comment he made about teammate Son Heung-min on Uruguayan television.

During an interview on Canal 10 in June, Bentancur was asked for a Spurs player’s shirt. He responded by saying, “Sonny’s? It could be Sonny’s cousin too as they all look the same.”

The comment sparked outrage, with British anti-discrimination charity Kick It Out receiving a “significant number” of complaints. Bentancur subsequently apologized to Son and Spurs skipper Hugo Lloris, acknowledging that he had “made a mistake.”

The FA has now charged Bentancur with an alleged breach of its rules in relation to a media interview. The statement from the FA reads:

“It’s alleged that the Tottenham midfielder has breached FA Rule E3.1 as he acted in an improper manner and/or used abusive and/or insulting words and/or brought the game into disrepute.

“It’s further alleged that this constitutes an ‘aggravated breach’ which is defined in FA Rule E3.2, as it included a reference, whether express or implied, to nationality and/or race and/or ethnic origin.”

Bentancur has until September 19 to respond to the charge. The FA’s investigation comes amid a wider crackdown on racism and discrimination in football. In 2020, former Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani was banned for three games and fined £100,000 for using the Spanish term “negrito” (small black person) in a social media post.

The FA’s decision to charge Bentancur sends a clear message that it will not tolerate any form of discrimination or abuse in the game. It remains to be seen how the case will be resolved, but it is likely that Bentancur will face a significant punishment if found guilty.

ISL Kicks Off with Kolkata 'Big Three' Rivalry

ISL Kicks Off with Kolkata ‘Big Three’ Rivalry

The Indian Super League (ISL) kicks off its 11th season on Friday with a highly anticipated clash between last season’s finalists Mohun Bagan and Mumbai City FC. This season marks a significant milestone as Kolkata’s “Big Three” clubs—Mohun Bagan, East Bengal, and Mohammedan SC—now compete in India’s top-tier football competition.

Mohammedan SC, the 103-year-old club, joins its city rivals after winning the I-League last season. Mohun Bagan, who merged with ATK in 2020, has been a consistent title contender since joining the ISL, winning the Shield last season but losing the final to Mumbai City FC. East Bengal completed the transition of Kolkata’s famous clubs to the ISL, reigniting their century-old rivalry at the highest level.

The opener between Mohun Bagan and Mumbai City promises to set the tone for an exciting season. Mohun Bagan has strengthened its attack with Australian star Jamie Maclaren, while Mumbai City has brought in several new faces, including Brandon Fernandes and Nikolaos Karelis.

The 2024-25 season promises to be more open and competitive, with NorthEast United FC setting the tone with a thrilling victory in the Durand Cup. Juan Pedro Benali’s team, which narrowly missed the playoffs last season, will look to build on their success.

The shadow of Anwar Ali’s four-month ban and hefty fine will loom large over East Bengal. Mohammedan Sporting faces a tough season ahead due to the departure of key players, but they have bolstered their squad with several new signings.

Last season’s semifinalists FC Goa will enter with renewed optimism under Manolo Marquez, who will juggle his club duties with his national team job. Chennaiyin FC and Bengaluru FC will also push to challenge for playoff success, while Sergio Lobera’s Odisha FC will look to add to their Super Cup title.

Kerala Blasters may struggle due to a weakened squad, while all eyes will be on Indian coach Khalid Jamil at Jamshedpur FC. Hyderabad FC, who endured financial instability in the build-up to the season, will face an uphill task.

Argentina Goalkeeper Martinez Accused of Assaulting Cameraman

Martinez slaps cameraman after loss against Colombia

Argentina’s goalkeeper, Emiliano Martínez, is currently facing significant backlash after an unsettling incident that occurred following the national team’s 2-1 loss to Colombia in a World Cup qualifying match. The situation unfolded when Jhonny Jackson, a TV cameraman, accused Martínez of slapping him while capturing moments on the field. This unfortunate encounter has drawn attention from media and fans alike, prompting discussions about athletes’ behavior after tough defeats.

The incident took place in Barranquilla, Colombia, immediately after Argentina’s disappointing loss in the qualifying match. Jhonny Jackson, who works for Caracol Televisión and RCN Deportes, reported that he approached Martínez to film post-match reactions. Unexpectedly, he said that Martínez “slapped me,” highlighting the frustration of the goalkeeper after the team’s defeat.

In an interview following the incident, Jackson expressed his anger, stating, “Out of the blue he slapped me. I felt angry, very angry. I was working, just like he was”. His comments reflect a sentiment of disappointment not only about the physical encounter but also about the lack of professionalism displayed by a prominent athlete. Jackson shared that he approached Martínez as he was greeting other players, emphasizing a sense of normalcy before the altercation.

The incident has not gone unnoticed by the sports community. Colombia’s association of sports journalists, known as ACORD, has urged FIFA to take action against Martínez. The organization’s president, Faiver Hoyos Hernández, issued a statement condemning the goalkeeper’s actions, reinforcing that such behavior undermines freedom of expression and sets a poor example for future generations.

Despite the outcry, Martínez and CONMEBOL (the South American football governing body) have remained silent on the allegations. This lack of response has further fueled criticism, with many fans expressing their disappointment at how an athlete should conduct themselves, especially in high-stakes situations.

Argentina currently leads the South American World Cup qualifying with 18 points after eight matches, a narrow two-point advantage over Colombia. The pressure on players to perform well amidst these competitive standings serves as a backdrop to the event, illustrating how high emotions can lead to regrettable actions on the field and beyond.

Harmilan Bains Overcomes Adversity, Inspires Young Athletes

Harmilan Bains, a renowned Indian middle-distance runner, has faced adversity with resilience and determination. After an undefeated 2021 season, she underwent knee surgery that sidelined her for 10 months. Upon her return, she triumphed with silver medals in the 800m and 1500m at the 2022 Asian Games.

Despite her past success, Bains experienced a setback when she failed to qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics. This led to a period of depression and suicidal thoughts. However, she drew strength from her situation and shared an inspiring message for young athletes.

“Enjoy your sport, don’t be stressed,” Bains advised. “I was under stress after missing my Olympics. I was almost in depression. Thoughts were coming in my mind, like suicide and just quitting everything, run away from my city.”

Bains emphasized the importance of parental support and encouraged youngsters to pursue their passions without excessive pressure. “My message to the parents is to let your child do whatever they want to and to the youngsters it is never too late to change your sport, your profession just enjoy whatever it is you’re doing,” she said.

As a guest of honor at the 63rd Subroto Cup Junior Boys tournament, Bains praised the event for its contribution to grassroots football development. “I would like to thank the Air Force for bringing me out here as I am enjoying a lot and it’s a really good opportunity for the athletes to perform at such a platform at such a young age,” she added.

Manipur’s T.G English School emerged victorious in the tournament, defeating Meghalaya’s Myngken Christian Higher Secondary School in a sudden death tie-breaker.

Bains also celebrated the remarkable performance of the Indian contingent at the 2024 Paris Paralympics. India surpassed its previous record of 19 medals at the Tokyo Paralympics, winning 29 medals and finishing 18th in the medal tally. “I am so happy for the para-athletes and it was the first time India ranked so high in the medal tally,” Bains concluded.

Tom Banton's Ankle Injury Casts Doubt on Somerset's Blast Hopes

Tom Banton’s Ankle Injury Casts Doubt on Somerset’s Blast Hopes

Somerset’s Vitality T20 Blast Finals Day hopes hang in the balance as star batsman Tom Banton faces an anxious wait to determine the severity of an ankle injury sustained during a pre-match football warm-up.

Banton, who has been in scintillating form for Somerset this season, went over on his ankle on Wednesday morning, forcing him to miss the field during Surrey’s first innings in the County Championship match at Taunton. An X-ray ruled out an ankle break, but an MRI scan on Thursday will provide a clearer picture of the damage.

Despite the injury, Banton displayed his unwavering commitment to the team by hobbling out to bat at No. 11 with a runner. He remained unbeaten on 28 off 28 balls, showcasing his determination to contribute even in limited capacity.

Somerset, the defending Blast champions, will face Surrey in the first semi-final on Saturday morning. Banton’s absence would be a significant blow to their title defense, as he is their leading run-scorer in the tournament with 515 runs at an impressive strike rate of 151.02.

Andy Hurry, Somerset’s director of cricket, expressed concern over Banton’s injury but praised his resilience. “We will get him scanned tomorrow and will have more information by the end of play,” Hurry said. “His heroics in batting today show how passionate he is about the club.”

Hurry also defended the club’s decision to include football in their warm-ups, emphasizing its benefits in terms of energy levels and mental preparation. “As director of cricket, I am keen to support it because I understand the value players get from it,” he said.

Somerset will anxiously await the results of Banton’s MRI scan, hoping that their star batsman will be fit enough to play in the Blast Finals Day. His presence would undoubtedly boost their chances of retaining the title.

Manchester United Post Fifth Straight Year of Losses Despite Record Revenues

Manchester United Post Fifth Straight Year of Losses Despite Record Revenues

Manchester United’s financial woes continued in the 2023/24 season, with the club posting net losses of £113.2 million ($148 million) despite record revenues. This marks the fifth consecutive year of losses for the Premier League giants.

The club’s revenues reached a record £661.8 million, a 2.1% increase from the previous year. This growth was primarily driven by record commercial and matchday revenues. However, United incurred exceptional costs of £47.8 million, largely related to Jim Ratcliffe’s purchase of a minority stake in the club.

On the pitch, United endured a disappointing season, finishing eighth in the Premier League and exiting the Champions League at the group stage. However, Erik ten Hag’s team managed to salvage some pride by winning the FA Cup, defeating Manchester City in the final.

In response to the club’s financial and on-field struggles, United have embarked on a major backroom shake-up. Omar Berrada, poached from Manchester City, has been appointed as the new chief executive.

“We are all extremely focused on working collectively to create a bright future with football success at the heart of it,” said Berrada. “We are working towards greater financial sustainability and making changes to our operations to make them more efficient.”

United’s financial situation is further complicated by the Premier League’s profitability and sustainability rules, which allow a maximum loss of £105 million over a three-season period. However, certain losses, such as infrastructure, youth team, and women’s team spending, are deemed “allowable.”

Everton and Nottingham Forest were both penalized with points deductions last season for breaching these rules. United, who have started the new Premier League season with two defeats in three matches, will need to improve their on-field performance and financial management to avoid similar sanctions.

Mbappe Rejects Mediation in PSG Wage Dispute

Mbappe Rejects Mediation in PSG Wage Dispute

Kylian Mbappe’s ongoing dispute with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) over unpaid wages and bonuses has taken a new turn, with the striker’s entourage rejecting the French football league’s (LFP) offer to mediate.

Mbappe claims PSG owes him a substantial sum of 55 million euros ($60.6m), which the club disputes. The amount includes a signing bonus, three months of salary, and an “ethical bonus.”

On Wednesday, lawyers representing both parties met with the LFP’s legal committee. The league proposed mediation to resolve the issue, but Mbappe’s entourage declined. They argued that mediation would be futile since the unpaid wages are evident from the player’s payslip.

PSG, on the other hand, welcomed the mediation proposal. The club emphasized Mbappe’s public and private commitments to the team and the unprecedented benefits he has received during his seven years in Paris.

The LFP has now invited Mbappe to reconsider the mediation process. However, it remains unclear whether the striker will accept.

The dispute has cast a shadow over Mbappe’s departure from PSG to Real Madrid this summer. The French international has been one of the most sought-after players in the world, and his move to Madrid was seen as a major coup for the Spanish giants.

The outcome of the dispute could have significant implications for both Mbappe and PSG. If Mbappe is successful in his claim, it could set a precedent for other players to demand unpaid wages. For PSG, it could damage their reputation and make it more difficult to attract top talent in the future.

Stimac: India Missed Opportunity Under My Leadership

Stimac: India Missed Opportunity Under My Leadership

Igor Stimac, the former head coach of the Indian national football team, has expressed his disappointment over the team’s recent performances under new coach Manolo Marquez. Stimac, who was sacked in June after India failed to qualify for the third round of the World Cup qualifiers, believes that the team has missed an opportunity to progress under his leadership.

“The future will show how right I was,” Stimac said. “I was clear about what needs to be done to get in a good place but not many who run football cared.”

Stimac pointed to the team’s impressive performances during his tenure, including winning three successive tournaments at home in 2023 and taking Iraq to penalties in the World Cup qualifiers. However, he believes that the team’s progress was hindered by a lack of support from the All India Football Federation (AIFF) and the Indian Super League (ISL) clubs.

“We played some wonderful games and I had a wonderful time with the players many of whom still keep in touch,” Stimac said. “But obviously when it was most needed, these people didn’t want to sacrifice a few weeks of ISL for the national team.”

Stimac also criticized the intensity of the ISL, which he believes is not sufficient to prepare players for international football.

“The intensity of ISL is not even 50% of intensity of international football,” Stimac said. “And there are no foreign players to help. So, you are put in a situation where you cannot do well.”

Stimac believes that the team’s recent struggles are a result of these factors and that the AIFF and ISL clubs need to do more to support the national team.

“And after each reversal, supporters will criticize either players or the coach,” Stimac said. “That is not where they should be pointing fingers.”

Ronaldo Slams Ten Hag, Calls for United Rebuild

Ronaldo Slams Ten Hag, Calls for United Rebuild

Cristiano Ronaldo has launched a scathing attack on Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag, criticizing his mindset and approach. The Portuguese forward, who left United on poor terms in 2022, believes the club needs to rebuild everything, including the manager.

Ronaldo’s criticism stems from United’s underwhelming performances under ten Hag. The Red Devils failed to qualify for the Champions League last season and have started the current Premier League campaign with two losses in three matches.

In an interview with Rio Ferdinand, Ronaldo said: “They need to rebuild everything, in my opinion. The coach, they say they cannot compete to win the League and Champions League. Manchester United coach, you cannot say that you’re not going to fight to win the League or Champions League. You have to be, to mentally say, listen, maybe we don’t have that potential, but I cannot say that. We’re going to try. You have to try.”

Ronaldo also suggested that ten Hag should seek assistance from Ruud van Nistelrooy, who recently joined United’s coaching staff. “If ten Hag listens to Ruud, maybe he can (help himself). I think it can help a lot because he knows the club and the club should listen (to) the guys who were there,” he said.

The 39-year-old superstar emphasized the importance of having former players with knowledge of the club involved in decision-making. “The people who understand the football, it was, 99 per cent is the people who were there in the dressing room. They know how to deal with the players. It’s the people who understand these things. So I believe that Ruud is going to help because he was inside the club. He knows the club. He knows the fans. If the coach listens to him, I think they can improve a little bit the club,” he said.

Ronaldo’s comments highlight the growing frustration among United fans over the club’s recent struggles. The Red Devils have spent heavily in the transfer market in recent years, but have failed to produce results on the field.

Benzema Responds to Ronaldo's Snub with Subtle Dig

Benzema Responds to Ronaldo’s Snub with Subtle Dig

Karim Benzema, the reigning Ballon d’Or winner, has subtly responded to Cristiano Ronaldo’s recent snub on social media. Ronaldo, during an interview with Rio Ferdinand on his YouTube channel, surprisingly chose Real Madrid’s new signing Kylian Mbappe over Benzema when asked to pick between the two.

Benzema and Ronaldo were a formidable duo at Real Madrid, winning four Champions League titles together. However, Benzema often played in Ronaldo’s shadow. After Ronaldo’s departure, Benzema flourished as the main man in Madrid’s attack, leading them to another Champions League triumph in 2021-22.

Ronaldo’s choice on Ferdinand’s show stunned many fans, who were surprised that he would snub Benzema, with whom he shared a close relationship at Santiago Bernabeu. Benzema has now taken a subtle dig at Ronaldo by posting a photo of himself holding the 2022 Ballon d’Or on his Instagram story.

In a recent interview, Benzema spoke about his passion for football and how it has shaped his mindset. “I’ve felt this pressure since I was eight years old, when I first started playing for a professional club,” he said. “Over time, it has transformed into ambition. For this upcoming season, I view it not as pressure but as ambition.”

Benzema’s response to Ronaldo’s snub shows that he is not afraid to stand up for himself. He has proven his worth as a world-class striker, and he is determined to continue to excel for Real Madrid.
