The All India Football Federation (AIFF) celebrated the Golden Jubilee of the Indian football team’s historic triumph in the 1974 AFC Youth Championship with a grand felicitation ceremony in New Delhi. The event honored the members of the victorious squad that shared the title with Iran after a thrilling 2-2 draw in the final, even after extra time.

This remarkable achievement marked the last significant international triumph for Indian football, following the bronze medal won by the senior team at the 1970 Asian Games in Bangkok. AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey presented mementos to six members of the squad who were present at the ceremony: captain Shabbir Ali, C.C. Jacob, Dilip Palit, Shishir Guha Dastidar, Ranjit (Gobinda Das), and S.P. Kumar.

Coach Arun Ghosh, who guided the team to victory, was unable to attend due to health reasons. His son-in-law, former National table tennis champion Nupur Santra, received the memento on his behalf.

Chaubey expressed his admiration for the team’s accomplishments, acknowledging that they had achieved something truly special. However, he also lamented the lack of international exposure for Indian football in the decades that followed.

“For almost five decades after India’s independence, we never focused on utilizing the international friendly windows, the FIFA World Cup, or even to collaborate with the world of football,” Chaubey said. “We chose not to look beyond the Olympics and the Asian Games at that time. That seems to have cost us important international exposure.”

Chaubey emphasized the need to bridge the gap with other footballing nations, acknowledging that India had lost valuable time in developing its international presence.

The felicitation ceremony served as a reminder of the golden era of Indian football and the potential that the country holds in the sport. It also highlighted the importance of investing in international exposure and collaboration to foster the growth and development of Indian football on the global stage.

Ankita, the captain of the women’s football team, shared her transformative experience with Special Olympics Bharat. She emphasized the organization’s positive impact on her understanding, compassion, and work ethic. She expressed her determination to make India and her parents proud and to give her all to secure the gold medal.

The tournament will also feature teams from Indonesia, Hong Kong, and the Maldives. The Indian contingent is hopeful of achieving success and representing their country with pride.

At the Visconde de Sepetiba municipal school in Sao Goncalo, Vinicius’s birthplace, students are immersed in a gamified learning environment. Perched on football-patterned cushions on artificial grass floors, they engage with educational content on tablets and smartphones using the Vini Jr Institute app.

“I learn better when I use the app,” says 11-year-old Ana Clara da Silva. “It’s easier, it looks like a game.”

The app, designed as a supplement to traditional teaching, provides each student with a personalized account that tracks their progress. Questions are presented in a playful, football-inspired manner, covering subjects such as mathematics, Portuguese, and science.

“Each school year is a ‘season,’ and each subject is a ‘match,'” explains Victor Oliveira, executive manager of the Vini Jr Institute. “The avatar ‘Vinizinho Jr’ celebrates each correct answer as if it were a goal.”

Beyond academic support, the institute also tackles the pervasive issue of racism in Brazil. It has developed an anti-racism training manual and provided instruction to teachers on the subject.

“He is very important to all of us,” says Ana Clara about Vinicius. “I’m glad he never gives up. And because his voice reaches a wide audience, he can fight for us.”

The Vini Jr Institute, initially funded by Vinicius himself, has expanded its reach with the support of sponsors. By the end of this year, it aims to reach 30 schools, benefiting over 4,500 students and 500 teachers.

Anushka Kumari, who scored six goals in the tournament, finished as the top scorer. India’s loss marked the end of their title hopes, while Bangladesh celebrated their triumph.
