Sir Alex Ferguson, Manchester United’s legendary manager, will relinquish his role as global ambassador after the season concludes. This decision comes as part of a cost-cutting initiative implemented by the club’s co-owners, INEOS.
Ferguson, a revered figure at Old Trafford, signed a lucrative contract with United in 2013, earning a substantial £2.16 million annually. However, sources within the club maintain that the split is amicable, with Ferguson voluntarily stepping back from certain responsibilities due to his advanced age of 82.
United have been implementing widespread job cuts to reduce expenses, having incurred significant losses in recent years. Ferguson’s departure from his ambassadorial duties is part of this cost-saving strategy.
During his illustrious tenure as manager, Ferguson guided United to an unprecedented 38 trophies, including 13 Premier League titles and two Champions League crowns. He retired from management in 2013, leaving an indelible mark on the club’s history.
Despite spending heavily on player acquisitions, United have struggled on the pitch, currently languishing in 14th place in the Premier League. The club has invested approximately £600 million in new signings since Erik ten Hag took over as manager in 2022.
It remains unclear whether the cost-cutting measures will impact other United ambassadors, including former players Andy Cole, Park Ji-sung, Dwight Yorke, Denis Irwin, and Bryan Robson.
