Sanjay Bangar Believes Virat Kohli Should Have Continued as India’s Test Captain

Virat Kohli’s decision to step down as India’s Test captain in January 2022 raised eyebrows, with many believing he should have continued in the role. Former batting coach Sanjay Bangar echoed this sentiment, stating that Kohli could have led India in red-ball cricket for a longer period.

Kohli’s tenure as Test captain was marked by unprecedented success. He took over from MS Dhoni in 2014 and led the team in 68 matches, securing 40 victories with a win percentage of 58.82. Under his leadership, India achieved historic milestones, including their maiden Test series triumph in Australia in 2018, victories in the West Indies, and reaching the inaugural ICC World Test Championship Final in 2021.

Kohli’s home record as captain was particularly impressive, with 24 wins out of 31 Tests played in India, and only two losses. His aggressive and fearless approach inspired the team to numerous memorable victories.

However, Kohli’s decision to step down from the captaincy came as a surprise to many. Bangar believes that Kohli could have continued in the role for longer, given his exceptional leadership qualities and the team’s success under his guidance.

After Kohli’s departure, Rohit Sharma was named India’s skipper in all formats. Both Kohli and Rohit have since retired from T20Is, with Suryakumar Yadav taking over the leadership in the shortest format. Rohit continues to lead the team in ODIs and Test cricket.

Waqar Younis Set to Become Pakistan Cricket's Chief Cricket Officer

Waqar Younis Set to Become Pakistan Cricket’s Chief Cricket Officer

Waqar Younis, the legendary fast bowler, is poised to assume the newly created position of Chief Cricket Officer (CCO) at the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). This development marks a significant shift in the PCB’s leadership structure, as Younis will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of Pakistani cricket.

Younis’ appointment comes after he joined the PCB as an advisor to the chairman of cricket affairs on a temporary basis. However, sources close to the matter have revealed that he has now been offered a paid position as the CCO. This position is modeled after the role held by Rob Key in the English Cricket Board.

As the CCO, Younis will be responsible for overseeing all cricket-related matters, including international and domestic schedules, player development, and the selection of national teams. He will also be involved in the negotiation of central contracts with players.

Younis’ extensive experience in international cricket, both as a player and a coach, makes him an ideal candidate for this role. He has represented Pakistan in 87 Tests and 262 One-Day Internationals, taking over 700 wickets across both formats. He has also served as the bowling coach and head coach of the Pakistan team on multiple occasions.

Younis’ appointment is expected to bring stability and direction to the PCB, which has faced criticism in recent years for its inconsistent performances and lack of long-term planning. His knowledge of the game and his ability to inspire players will be invaluable assets to the board.

The PCB’s Board of Governors is expected to approve Younis’ appointment in the coming weeks. Once he assumes his new role, he will begin working on a comprehensive plan to revitalize Pakistani cricket and restore its former glory.

MS Dhoni's Midas Touch: Nurturing Champions and Building Successful Teams

MS Dhoni’s Midas Touch: Nurturing Champions and Building Successful Teams

MS Dhoni, the legendary Indian cricketer and former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain, is renowned for his exceptional leadership skills and ability to nurture young talent. In a recent episode of Ravichandran Ashwin’s YouTube channel, former Australian batsman Michael Hussey, who has a close association with CSK and Dhoni, shared his insights on Dhoni’s remarkable ability to create champion players and successful teams.

Hussey emphasized Dhoni’s keen understanding of what it takes to foster a winning environment and assemble a team that can achieve long-term success. He highlighted Dhoni’s unwavering trust in his players, which has been a key factor in CSK’s consistent performance over the years.

“He looks for good players to play that particular role, but he also looks for good people,” Hussey said. “And once he has got those good people, he will really back them to the hilt.”

Hussey cited the example of Shane Watson, who struggled for form during a season with Australia but was given unwavering support by Dhoni. Watson eventually repaid Dhoni’s faith by delivering crucial performances in the playoffs.

“Dhoni just said ‘no, we are sticking with him, he will come good’,” Hussey recalled. “And sure enough, he came good when we made the playoffs.”

Hussey also praised Dhoni’s ability to alleviate pressure from players, particularly young Indian players. He attributed this to Dhoni’s unique perspective on the game and his exceptional interpersonal skills.

“He’s got an amazing ability to take pressure off players, particularly young Indian players,” Hussey said. “He’s got an amazing perspective on the game; the way he treats people and players is very special. You feel like you’re backed, you’re trusted and you’re loved very much.”

Despite handing over the CSK captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad ahead of the ongoing IPL 2024 season, Dhoni remains a guiding force for the team. His presence and experience continue to inspire the players and contribute to CSK’s success.
