CSK's Pathirana Doubtful for MI Clash, Fleming Praises Gaikwad

CSK’s Pathirana Doubtful for MI Clash, Fleming Praises Gaikwad

Ahead of the highly anticipated Indian Premier League (IPL) clash between arch-rivals Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Mumbai Indians (MI), CSK head coach Stephen Fleming hinted that pacer Matheesha Pathirana could miss the game due to a minor injury.

Pathirana, who has been a key performer for CSK, has missed the team’s previous two matches against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Fleming expressed optimism that Pathirana may be available for the MI game, but emphasized that the team would not rush him back if he is not fully fit.

“It (Pathirana’s niggle) was not as bad as what we had thought, so we are very hopeful that if not tomorrow, then very close,” Fleming said at a pre-match press conference. “We know the importance of him in games like this, but we will make sure he is 100 per cent in this form.”

Fleming also praised CSK’s new captain, Ruturaj Gaikwad, who he believes possesses similar qualities to former skipper MS Dhoni. “There is no difference (between Gaikwad and Dhoni). He is as cool as it gets,” Fleming said. “He is cut from the same cloth, so that is rubbed through.”

Fleming dismissed concerns about Gaikwad’s “slow” strike rate, arguing that it needs to be put into context. “He is such an impressive young man around his game and what he needs to do,” Fleming said. “He has been, I think, unfairly put into a bracket where he has been called slow. But you have to have context to some of these stats.”

Fleming acknowledged that batting has evolved significantly in the IPL, but stressed the need for measures to help bowlers. “The two bouncers (rule) is one, and maybe we need to keep looking at other ways to do that,” he said.

The CSK-MI rivalry is one of the most intense in the IPL, with both teams having won five titles each. Fleming expressed his excitement for the upcoming match. “We love it. We look forward to this fixture,” he said. “Over the years it has developed into a really competitive rivalry, and it is based on two good teams playing successful brands of cricket.”

CSK Coach Defends Gaikwad, Compares Him to Dhoni

CSK Coach Defends Gaikwad, Compares Him to Dhoni

Chennai Super Kings head coach Stephen Fleming has defended captain Ruturaj Gaikwad against criticism of his batting pace, comparing him to legendary former skipper MS Dhoni. Gaikwad, who took over the captaincy at the start of the season, has faced criticism for his strike rate despite a solid start to his leadership tenure.

Fleming highlighted Gaikwad’s contributions to the team, emphasizing his ability to anchor innings and build partnerships, qualities reminiscent of Dhoni’s leadership. While Gaikwad’s strike rate may not be as high as some of his counterparts, Fleming believes his value to the team extends beyond mere statistics.

“He’s as cool as it gets,” Fleming said of Gaikwad’s leadership style. “He’s been unfairly put into a bracket where he’s been called slow. But you have to have context to some of these stats.”

Fleming clarified that the decision to appoint Gaikwad as captain is a strategic and long-term one, rather than a temporary arrangement. “I hope so. That’s the plan, and so far it’s worked well,” he said.

Fleming also praised the love and support that fans have for Dhoni, which has benefited CSK. “It’s magnificent, to be honest,” he said. “The team feels pride when they walk out to an away game and there’s a large amount of yellow.”

Meanwhile, Mumbai Indians’ Mohammad Nabi said getting the team combination right was key to their recent victories. “The plans from the bowling and batting groups are going really well which is why we won the last two games,” he said.

Nabi also discussed the challenges of bowling as an off-spinner at the Wankhede Stadium. “The conditions at Wankhede as a spinner are really tough to bowl as an off-spinner,” he said.

KKR's Unbeaten Run Ends in Comprehensive Defeat to CSK

KKR’s Unbeaten Run Ends in Comprehensive Defeat to CSK

Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) unbeaten streak in the IPL 2024 was shattered by Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in a comprehensive seven-wicket defeat on Monday. The KKR batters, known for their aggressive approach, failed to deliver on the Chennai pitch, managing only 137/9 in 20 overs.

Ravindra Jadeja and Tushar Deshpande led the CSK bowling attack, taking two wickets each to restrict KKR’s scoring. After the match, a fan questioned KKR’s strategy, suggesting that a more “selfish” approach with a player prioritizing personal milestones could have resulted in a higher score.

However, former New Zealand fast bowler Mitchell McClenaghan disagreed, urging KKR to stick to their fearless approach. “Sometimes you shoot for the stars and land on the moon. No biggie – their formula has worked so far no need to become selfish,” McClenaghan tweeted.

KKR skipper Shreyas Iyer acknowledged the team’s shortcomings in assessing the wicket. “We were phenomenal in the powerplay but after that, we couldn’t capitalize, we lost consecutive wickets. We weren’t able to assess the conditions as quickly as possible,” Iyer said.

The defeat marked KKR’s first loss of the season, while CSK secured their second win. The match highlighted the importance of adapting to different pitch conditions and the challenges of maintaining an unbeaten run in the competitive IPL.

Dhoni's Farewell Tour: A Double-Edged Sword for Chennai Super Kings

Dhoni’s Farewell Tour: A Double-Edged Sword for Chennai Super Kings

MS Dhoni’s Farewell Tour: A Blessing or a Burden for Chennai Super Kings?

Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) triumph in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 was a fitting tribute to the legendary MS Dhoni. However, his decision to continue playing in 2024 has raised questions about its impact on the team.

Dhoni’s presence as a mentor and strategist is invaluable, but his role as a batter has been puzzling. In 2023, he excelled as a finisher, but in 2024, he has often batted lower down the order, limiting his impact.

This has led to concerns about CSK’s batting depth. While Ruturaj Gaikwad has taken over as captain, the team lacks a reliable wicket-keeper batsman other than Dhoni. An injury to him could be catastrophic.

Moreover, Dhoni’s influence on the field has been a topic of debate. Some experts believe that his presence may overshadow Gaikwad’s authority as captain. This could create a power struggle within the team.

The farewell tour has also been marred by Dhoni’s uncharacteristic errors. A dropped catch against Kolkata Knight Riders raised concerns about his declining physical abilities.

While Dhoni’s presence is a blessing for CSK, it is crucial to find a balance between his mentorship and his on-field contributions. The team must ensure that his farewell tour does not become a hindrance to their success.

Dhoni's Rare Miss: CSK Legend Drops Easy Catch in IPL Match

Dhoni’s Rare Miss: CSK Legend Drops Easy Catch in IPL Match

In a recent Indian Premier League (IPL) match between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), fans witnessed an uncharacteristic moment involving the legendary Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Despite CSK ultimately securing victory by 7 wickets, the spotlight was on Dhoni for dropping an easy catch of West Indian marauder Andre Russell.

The incident occurred in the eighth ball of the 18th over, when Mustafizur Rahman executed a deceptive slower delivery aimed at Russell, managing to elicit an edge from the KKR all-rounder. Despite the skillful execution, Dhoni, positioned behind the stumps, failed to secure the catch, attempting it with just one hand.

The incident left the jam-packed crowd at Chepauk in disbelief, with both Mustafizur and CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad, who was fielding near the boundary line, momentarily stunned by the missed opportunity. However, despite the lifeline provided by the dropped catch, Russell couldn’t capitalize on the reprieve and was dismissed soon after for just 10 runs.

Former England skipper Michael Vaughan and ex-New Zealand cricketer Simon Doull engaged in a discussion about Dhoni’s dropped catch on Cricbuzz. “MS Dhoni dropped quite a simple catch with the one hand and the cameras went straight on to most of the CSK team. Because it was MS Dhoni, most of them were like – “That’s fine,” Vaughan said.

Doull added, “Nobody said a word. I would love to see the bowler give a reaction (makes animated gestures).”

Vaughan: “You could see that he wanted to. He went for it and then he thought – Oh, it is MS Dhoni.”

Despite the initial setback, CSK’s disciplined bowling effort restricted KKR to a total of 137/9 in their allotted 20 overs. While the missed catch generated a wave of surprise and anticipation among fans, it ultimately did not significantly alter the outcome of the match, as CSK emerged victorious in the end.

Chennai chased down the target quite comfortably in 17.4 over riding on a fine half-century from skipper Gaikwad. Following the high-profile clash, CSK’s stronghold at their home ground continued to be evident as they comfortably secured victory without facing significant challenges, effectively ending KKR’s unbeaten streak in this season of the IPL.

Chennai Super Kings’ Matheesha Pathirana Clarifies Gesture Towards MS Dhoni

During the Indian Premier League (IPL) match between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Gujarat Titans (GT), a video clip emerged on social media suggesting that Sri Lankan pacer Matheesha Pathirana had touched the feet of former CSK captain MS Dhoni. However, a subsequent video from a different angle has shed light on the actual incident.

The side angle footage reveals that Pathirana did not touch Dhoni’s feet but instead bent down to pick up the bowling marker, which was placed near Dhoni’s feet. The initial video, which had gone viral, had sparked speculation that Pathirana was seeking blessings from Dhoni.

Meanwhile, CSK registered a comprehensive 63-run victory over GT at the Chepauk fortress. Deepak Chahar provided a strong start for CSK, dismissing Wriddhiman Saha and Shubman Gill in the powerplay. GT never threatened to chase down the target in the final six overs, as CSK inflicted GT’s biggest defeat in terms of runs.

Earlier, CSK got off to a flying start with the bat, despite losing Rachin Ravindra’s wicket in the final over of the powerplay. Ravindra amassed 46 off just 20 deliveries, while skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad provided support. Shivam Dube and Daryl Mitchell also contributed with valuable knocks, helping CSK post a total of 206/6.

Steve Smith Praises MS Dhoni’s Unparalleled Cricketing Acumen and Leadership

Australian cricket legend Steve Smith has heaped praise upon former Indian captain MS Dhoni, hailing him as an unparalleled cricketing mind and exceptional leader. Smith, who played alongside Dhoni during his stint with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), described the experience as “tremendous,” highlighting Dhoni’s exceptional skills behind the stumps and his profound understanding of the game.

“There’s no one better in India to have behind the stumps than MS Dhoni,” Smith remarked. “The way he understands the game and the angles of the game is second to none. So look, he was a tremendous person to play with. I really enjoyed his company on and off the field.”

Smith also lauded Dhoni’s calm demeanor and his significant contributions to his cricketing development. “He’s such a chilled guy, obviously extremely busy with loads of things outside the game, but extremely chilled down to earth and a wonderful person,” Smith said. “There were many occasions where MS was fantastic. You know, I really enjoyed playing with him. I enjoyed leading him as well. He certainly helped me out.”

Dhoni’s illustrious reign with CSK came to an end when the franchise appointed Ruturaj Gaikwad as the new captain. However, despite Dhoni’s departure from the leadership role, CSK has commenced their IPL 2024 campaign with remarkable victories against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Gujarat Titans (GT).

Smith’s admiration for Dhoni is a testament to the latter’s enduring legacy in Indian cricket. Dhoni’s exceptional cricketing acumen, leadership prowess, and calm demeanor have made him one of the most respected and successful captains in the history of the game.

CSK's Gaikwad Impresses as Batting Coach Hussey Praises Leadership

CSK’s Gaikwad Impresses as Batting Coach Hussey Praises Leadership

Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) batting coach Michael Hussey has heaped praise on newly-appointed skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad, hailing him as a “smart, cricket-savvy” leader who has excelled in rotating bowlers and setting fields. Following CSK’s comprehensive 63-run victory over Gujarat Titans (GT), Hussey lauded Gaikwad’s tactical acumen and understanding of the game.

“Ruturaj has been fantastic,” Hussey said. “He’s very well prepared and has a clear understanding of the game. He works closely with head coach Stephen Fleming and MS Dhoni to develop tactics, and his ability to change bowlers and set fields effectively has been impressive.”

Hussey also commended all-rounder Rachin Ravindra for his explosive starts, noting that the Kiwi star has quickly adapted to the IPL stage. “Rachin is eager to learn and has a positive attitude,” Hussey said. “He feeds off the crowd’s energy and has shown great confidence in his abilities.”

One of the match’s surprises was the cameo by 20-year-old Sameer Rizwi, who smashed two sixes in his six-ball innings. Hussey highlighted Rizwi’s natural hitting ability, especially against spinners. “He has a lot of power and can hit the ball cleanly,” Hussey said. “It was a bold move to send him in against Rashid Khan, but he delivered with two big hits.”

Hussey also praised the team’s think-tank for promoting Rizwi ahead of MS Dhoni, a move that paid off with two sixes at the end of the innings. “It was a masterstroke,” Hussey said. “We wanted to utilize Rizwi’s power against spin, and he delivered.”

Hussey emphasized the team’s directive to “keep pushing the game forward,” especially with the introduction of the Impact Player rule. “We have extra batting and bowling options now,” Hussey said. “This allows our batsmen to take risks and play aggressively, knowing they have support from the coaches and captain.”

Dhoni's Rare Emotional Outburst After Jadeja's IPL Heroics

Dhoni’s Rare Emotional Outburst After Jadeja’s IPL Heroics

MS Dhoni, renowned for his composed demeanor on the field, displayed a rare outburst of emotion during last year’s IPL final. The incident occurred after Ravindra Jadeja’s heroic performance guided Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to their fifth IPL title.

In the rain-affected match, CSK faced a daunting task in the final over, needing 10 runs off the last two balls. Jadeja stepped up to the plate, smashing medium-pacer Mohit Sharma for a six and a four, turning the tide in CSK’s favor.

Dhoni’s reaction to Jadeja’s heroics was uncharacteristic. He embraced and lifted Jadeja, a gesture that left an indelible mark on fans. Recalling the moment during a promotional event, Jadeja joked that he might be the only person besides Dhoni’s wife, Sakshi, to receive such a lift.

Dhoni praised Jadeja’s batting, expressing his confidence in his ability to achieve the target. “I was quite confident about you know Jaddu has the talent and mindset to achieve the target,” Dhoni said. “It was a very memorable innings.”

Dhoni acknowledged the difficulty of Jadeja’s task, particularly the sixes he hit before the final ball. “Looking at the TV, it looks easy but now that I bat down the order, I know how difficult it is to get that kind of elevation and win it for six,” Dhoni said.

The emotions ran high after CSK’s victory, with Dhoni expressing his gratitude for Jadeja’s contribution. “The emotions were very high. So a big round of applause for Jaddu for the way he batted,” Dhoni said.

Jadeja’s performance in the final showcased his talent and determination, while Dhoni’s emotional outburst highlighted the close bond between the two players and the significance of the victory for CSK.

Shivam Dube's Resurgence: CSK's Midas Touch Unlocks Potential

Shivam Dube’s Resurgence: CSK’s Midas Touch Unlocks Potential

Shivam Dube’s resurgence under the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) has been a testament to the franchise’s ability to unlock the potential of underperforming players. After struggling to find his footing with the Royal Challengers Bangalore and Rajasthan Royals, Dube has flourished in CSK’s batting lineup, becoming a key contributor to their success.

CSK’s clear role definition for Dube has been instrumental in his transformation. The team has given him the freedom to attack spin bowlers without hesitation, a strategy that has paid dividends. Last season, Dube smashed 57 sixes, including 35 against spin, the most by any Indian player in IPL history.

Dube’s improvement against the short ball has been another crucial factor in his success. Once a weakness, he has now become a confident player who can not only handle bouncers but also find boundaries off them. CSK batting coach Mike Hussey credits Dube’s tireless work ethic for this improvement.

CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad revealed that former India and CSK captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has closely monitored Dube’s progress against the short ball. Dhoni’s guidance and the supportive environment at CSK have played a significant role in Dube’s development.

AB de Villiers, who played alongside Dube at RCB, believes that the CSK environment has allowed Dube to thrive. “He never really broke free in the RCB changing room,” said de Villiers. “He talks about being free in CSK, and that is the magic recipe that MSD, Gaikwad, Fleming, and all the guys from the past have set up over there.”

Dube’s resurgence is a testament to CSK’s ability to identify and nurture talent. The franchise has a long history of getting the best out of players who have struggled elsewhere, including Shane Watson, Shardul Thakur, Robin Uthappa, Ajinkya Rahane, and Tushar Deshpande.
